Military Medical Teams to Assist with COVID-19 Patient Surge

Three military medical teams are coming to Oklahoma to help some hospitals deal with the surge of patients being treated for the omicron variant of the coronavirus. KWTV News 9 reports that an Army medical team of 25 will work with OU Medical Center and two Air Force teams with 45 personnel will work with Integris Health in Oklahoma City. They include doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, and technicians. The teams could all be arriving as early as next week. The Oklahoman reported that COVID-19 hospitalizations hit an all-time high in Oklahoma this past week, and hospitals are also dealing with staff shortages. The Oklahoman also reported that the four major health systems in Oklahoma City had no open intensive-care-unit beds. The state health department reported the three-day average was nearly 2,100 patients hospitalized with COVID-19.

 

Earthquake Recorded Near Blanchard

Some residents in the town of Cole which is near Blanchard may have felt a small earthquake Friday morning. The Oklahoma Geological Survey said a tremor measuring 3.1 on the Richter Scale was detected about 6:15 a.m. Friday about four miles east of Blanchard. There were no reports of damage. Individuals who felt the tremor are asked to contact the Oklahoma Geological Survey.

 

Jury Duty for Grady County Residents Canceled

Grady County residents who received a summons for jury duty for the week of January 31^st will not have to report. District Judge Kory Kirkland said that all the cases scheduled have been resolved so there is no need for individuals to appear at the county courthouse on Monday.

 

Tuttle Oil, Gas Wells Up and Running

We have more oil and gas well completions and production reports to tell you about today. Citizen Energy of Tulsa filed a report with the Corporation Commission on the completion of three wells on a single pad about a mile south of Tuttle. The three wells were producing about 1,200 barrels of oil and nearly 5,000 Mcf of natural gas per day. Completion dates were last November and drilled to depths of about 19,000 feet.

 

Tribe Receives Grant for Transit Program

The Wichita and Affiliated Tribe of Oklahoma has received a grant to develop a transit plan. The tribe received more than $24,000 from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration. The project is expected to improve access to and within the community so the tribe may better serve its members and the rural communities throughout Caddo County.

Former Grady County Sheriff Ron Taylor Dies

Former Grady County Sheriff Ron Taylor, who spent his entire life in law enforcement, passed away this week. Taylor, a member of the Oklahoma Sheriff's Association Hall of fame, was 82 when he died at his home on Tuesday. He was born in Minco in 1939 and was a life-long Grady County resident. His first job in law enforcement was with the police department in Garden City, Kansas then he joined the Grady County sheriff's office as a deputy in the 1960s. He served a few years as chief investigator for the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association. He was elected sheriff in 1974 and spent 20 years at the post until his retirement in 1994. He was inducted into the sheriff's association Hall of Fame in 2001. Taylor is survived by his wife of 64 years, Maxine; daughter Connie Browder and spouse Gregg; and daughter Karla Brooks and spouse Perry and their families. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 29th at the First Missionary Baptist Church of Pocasset. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oklahoma Sheriff's Association scholarship fund.

 

Man Critical After Crash with Semi

A driver is critically injured when he tried to pass a semi in eastern Grady County last night. 39-year old Danny Alambar of Lindsay was air-lifted to an Oklahoma City hospital. The accident happened on State Highway 19 west of Alex about 8:45 last night. The highway patrol reports that Alambar was following the semi and tried to pass it just as the big rig tried to turn onto a county road. The semi then collided with Alambar's truck which caused the pickup to roll several times, ejecting Alambar from his vehicle. The driver of the semi, 49-year old Scott Reynolds of Oklahoma City, was not injured.

 

Fugitive Captured After Being on the Run for Years

A fugitive from Caddo County has been found in Alabama nearly 15 years after failing to register as a sex offender. 49-year old David Warren Toyekoyah of Carnegie had been wanted since 2008. The Oklahoman reports that in addition to failing to register as a sex offender in Caddo County, Toyekoyah was wanted for violating terms of his probation for crimes out of Seminole and Pottawattamie counties. Officials said Toyekoyah was located in a rural area in northern Alabama about half-way between Birmingham and Nashville, Tennessee a couple of weeks ago and that he was arrested Wednesday. Johnny Kuhlman, a U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Oklahoma, said the arrest comes after a multi-state collaboration between federal and local law enforcement.

New Convalescent Plasma Available for COVID Patients

The Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI) says new and improved COVID-19 convalescent plasma is now available to treat individuals who are currently battling the coronavirus. Officials say the timing couldn't be better as the Food and Drug Administration has withdrawn some drugs that are now ineffective against the omicron variant of COVID. Convalescent plasma comes from the blood donations of individuals who have recovered from the coronavirus within the last six months. The OBI indicated that a study of more than 1,200 cases showed those who received the convalescent plasma were hospitalized half as often as those who did not. They say it’s the best data available in studying the out-patient benefit of 'borrowing' the immune strength of a recovered patient to help boost the defense system of newly-infected one. OBI President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. John Armitage asks individuals who have recently recovered from the coronavirus to consider donating their convalescent plasma. The donation must be made a minimum of ten days after being fully recovering from COVID. Anyone donating blood between now and Feb. 6th will have their blood automatically tested for the anti-bodies at no charge.

 

Caddo County Suspect Sought for Rape of Teenager

A felony arrest warrant has been issued for an Anadarko man accused of raping and impregnating a 14-year old girl. Caddo County authorities are seeking 20-year old Ashton Martin. He's wanted for second degree rape and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The Lawton Constitution cites court documents that say Anadarko police began their investigation in early December after getting a call from the girl's mother. The mother said it appeared the relationship was consensual and while she did not want to ruin Martin's life, she does want him to know it’s not OK for him to have had sex with a 14-year old. If convicted of the rape charge Martin could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.

 

Runaway Tuttle Teen Sought

Tuttle police are reaching out for help to find a runaway teen. Authorities say it's believed that 16-year old James Rocky Carroll left his home very early Wednesday morning. Our partners at KWTV News 9 reported that authorities believe Carroll was seen in Weatherford about 9:00 a.m. Wednesday. He could be headed to Denver or perhaps to Montana. Carroll may be driving a maroon 2013 Chevy pickup with Oklahoma tag number JHK-158. Anyone with information about James Rocky Carroll is asked to reach out to Tuttle police.

 

Southwest District Livestock Show Returns to Chix

The largest livestock show for youth in the southwest part of the state will be in Chickasha in a couple of weeks. The Southwest District Livestock Show will be held at the Grady County Fairgrounds Feb. 8th through 12th. Superintendent Danny Wedel talks about some of the prize money the youth will be competing for.

 

         

 

Wedel said last year that more than 1,000 youth pre-registered 2,500 animals and they are expecting that or more pre-entries this year. Pre-registration ends tomorrow night.

State Lawmakers Prepare for Legislative Session

Literally hundreds of bills have been filed at the state capitol ahead of the legislative session which begins February 7^th. Among the measures filed is one to remove the state sales tax on groceries. State Rep. Sean Roberts (R-Hominy) says he will continue his push for a referendum to have voters decide the issue. Roberts says Oklahoma is one of only six states in the country that allows full taxes on groceries. He says since the state currently has a surplus of funds and revenues are up, now is the time to bring much-needed relief to Oklahoma families. State Senator Roland Pederson (R-Burlington) has filed a bill that should help farmers and ranchers renew their agriculture sales tax exemptions. He said SB 1655 would simplify the renewal process for those who have already met the initial requirements to qualify. State Senator Adam Pugh (R-Edmond) wants to continue working to make Oklahoma the top state in the country for retired and active military veterans. He has filed SB 401 which would exempt military retirement pay from state income taxes. He said Oklahoma has one of the highest active and retired military populations in the country but continues to be ranked one of the least tax-friendly states for military retirees. He said there are currently 33 states that don’t tax military retirement pay.

 

Production Report Filed on Rush Springs Oil, Gas Wells

Completion reports on a couple of Grady County oil and gas wells show some good production numbers. Oklahoma City-based Gulfport Energy reports that two wells on a single pad east of Rush Springs were bringing in more than 1,400 barrels of oil and nearly 30,000 Mcf of natural gas per day. The production is from the Frick Wells located in Section 26 of Township 4 North, Range 6 West. The wells were drilled to depths of between 23,000 and 24,000 feet. The wells were completed last June but the production reports were just recently released.

 

Chix Library Offers Series on Money Managing

For individuals wanting to improve their financial well-being the Chickasha Public Library will hold a short series to help. There will be four weekly sessions that will cover a range of topics which include Becoming Fiscally Fit; Becoming Credit-Worthy; Becoming Debt-Free; and Building Savings for Now, for Investments, and Retirement. The programs will be led by Leslie Sledge who is a certified financial counselor and credit restoration specialist. It is a virtual series and will be held each Friday from 3-6 p.m. beginning Feb. 4th and running through March 4th. Regional Burn Bans Extended

County commissioners throughout the region have extended burn bans, many of which have been in effect for more than a month. The bans have been extended for two more weeks in Grady, Caddo, Stephens, and Comanche counties through Monday, February 7th. There are burn bans in 33 Oklahoma counties as the dry weather pattern continues for much of the state. The drought is also worsening throughout much of western Oklahoma. Most of Grady County and parts of McClain, Garvin, Stephens and Comanche counties are in a D-3 designation which is extreme drought. The northern part of Grady County and nearly all of Caddo and Canadian counties are in a D-2 designation or severe drought according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. There is a slight chance for snow Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night with forecast calling for less than a half-inch of snow. Much of the region has gone more than 60 days with less than a half-inch of rain.

 

Utilities Still Asked to Provide Info on Feb. 2021 Storm Costs

A group within the Oklahoma Corporation Commission is continuing to require five major utilities in the Sooner State to reveal more details about their costs from the February, 2021 deep freeze. The Public Utilities Division is asking the commission to have PSO, Center Point Energy, ONG, OG&E, and Summit Utilities 'publicly disclose certain documents and information related to the extreme weather emergency’. The website OK Energy Today reports that the request asks for the total amount each utility paid to natural gas providers, transportation services, purchased power, and other related expenses. Officials say it would allow the general public to view information. It’s anticipated that it would not give an unfair competitive advantage to providers of these services, and should not have a negative impact on any future requests for competitive bids.

 

Group Looks to Capitalize on Chix 'Christmas Town' Success

Chickasha officials look to build upon the recent success of the city's Christmas Town promotion. Economic Development Council (EDC) Director Jim Cowan will hold a community meeting next week to get input on how to make the Christmas Town moniker even better. Last season the EDC launched a campaign with the Christmas Town music video from The Imaginaries. Cowan said the video was streamed nearly 250,000 times, it was featured on more than 50 podcasts, and shown on television stations from Tulsa to Austin, Texas. Cowan says 2022 will be the 30th anniversary for the Festival of Light, and wants public input on what more the city can do to promote tourism city wide throughout the six-week holiday season from mid-November to New Year's Eve. The meeting will be Monday, Jan. 31^st at 2:00 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce.

 

Mentors Sought for 5th Grade Student Programs

A couple of programs designed to have community members interact with fifth grade students will be happening next month. The Chickasha Public School Foundation will hold its Diamonds in the Rough program for girls and its Gentlemen of Distinction program for boys. Gab Shephard with the Foundation says she is looking for community members who would like to share their success stories with the fifth graders. The events will include a motivational speaker. The Diamonds in the Rough program will be Tuesday, February 8th and the Gentlemen of Distinction Program on Tuesday, February 22nd. DA Hicks Appointed to Chair Children's Advocacy Group

District Attorney Jason Hicks has been chosen to lead a support group that helps Oklahoma's children. Hicks will be serving as the commissioner for the District Attorneys Council for the Oklahoma Commission on Children and Youth. Hicks was appointed to the post last week by Gov. Kevin Stitt. The post does not include any pay and he will continue his role as the top prosecutor in Grady, Caddo, Stephens, and Jefferson counties. The commission has been around for 40 years and has helped to bring accountability and independent oversight into the state's child and youth service system. Hicks said the appointment is an honor and that providing guidance on how state law affects families, children, and youth is essential to successful leadership. ICAN Program Helps Victims of Domestic Violence

A group supporting victims of sexual and domestic violence has been serving the region for more than 40 years. The Intervention and Crisis Advocacy Network (ICAN) has been operating in Grady and Canadian counties since the early 1980s. The program was initially known as the Women's Service Center but also is open to help male victims of domestic violence. Mark Whetzel is the director of ICAN. The program offers emergency shelters to get victims quickly out of harm’s way. He said many times victims don't want to leave a relationship because of they don't want to break up their family-

Marlow Voters to Decide $34 Million, 20-year School Bond Proposal

Marlow school officials are proposing a multi-million dollar bond issue over 20 years to build a number of new buildings and safe rooms. It's a $34 million bond proposal that school district voters will decide in a couple of weeks. The plan calls for the demolition of a 94-year old auditorium and to build a state-of-the-art performing arts center; construction of a new wrestling facility; and some renovations for the high school football field. Eight new classrooms would be built at the high school and officials also plan to build safe rooms at the high school and middle schools. Each safe room would hold up to 800 people that the community could access. School officials say that 75 percent of the cost of the safe rooms would be paid for by grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. If voters approve the measure property taxes would increase by nearly 10 percent.  The issue will be decided in the upcoming the school bond election on Feb. 8th.

 

Anadarko Selected to Participate in COVID Vax Discussion

The City of Anadarko has been selected to be one of three communities to take part in a conversation about COVID-19 vaccinations. It will be a virtual panel discussion on Thursday, February 3^rd at 7:00 p.m. and individuals will be able to watch the discussion live at the Anadarko library. One of the panelists is KWTV-News 9's Amanda Taylor. Questions can be submitted in advance in a drop box at the library. University to Host Religious Reconciliation Lecture

The University of Science and Arts will host a renowned author for its upcoming Ableson Religious Reconciliation lecture. Dr. Benjamin Zeller will discuss ‘New Religious Movements and Religious Radicalism in America’. He'll examine the growth of new and alternative currents in religious thought in the United States and how they have been used to justify extreme points of view about politics, ethics, education, and society at-large. Zeller is an associate professor and chair of religion at Lake Forrest College. The lecture will be on Tuesday, February 1st at 7:00 p.m. in the Science and Arts Ballroom. There is no charge to attend the program.

Civil Suit Filed Against County Commish Accused of Embezzlement

One current and some former employees of the Tuttle county commissioner's district have formally filed a civil lawsuit against County Commissioner Mike Walker. An attorney for five individuals claims that Walker set up surveillance equipment to spy on employees who were cooperating with state investigators looking into embezzlement allegations against Walker. Attorney Mark Hammons tells our partners at KWTV-New 9 that Walker took steps to find out who it was that was supplying information, including unlawfully bugging some of the offices. Walker's attorney Bret Burns said the surveillance equipment was installed as a standard security measure and there was no bad intent and nothing illegal about a county barn operating a security system. The fired employees were identified as office manager Janna Titler and road workers Jeff Autry, Zachary Davis, and Larry Brown. Zane Terry still works for District One but claims that Walker has harassed him to the point where he's had to take off work. Walker's criminal embezzlement trial is scheduled to begin in March.

 

Chickasha Fire Department to Receive Another New Truck

We have another segment today with Chickasha Fire Chief Tony Samaniego. A new fire engine was recently purchased to replace an older model. And firefighters will also be getting a new rescue truck. It's a 2022 ½-ton, 4-wheel drive Dodge Ram, which the chief says is more suitable for their work for calls outside the city limits.

 

              

 

The Grady County 522 EMS District is supplying nearly $70,000 to purchase and outfit the truck. The district also provided about $30,000 to buy battery-operated jaws-of-life equipment for the department.

 

Jury Duty Canceled for Next Week

Grady County residents who received a summons for jury duty next week are off the hook. District Judge Kory Kirkland said all the felony cases on the docket have been resolved. However the judge said that the following week of jury duty that starts the week of January 31 is still on as scheduled.

 

AARP Monitors Storm Cost Cases at Corporation Commission

An advocacy group for senior citizens is carefully watching the cases at the Corporation Commission that are related to the massive storm costs from a year ago. A representative from AARP believes the storm costs could top $6 billion. The website OK Energy Today reports that attorney Deborah Thompson spoke of AARPs effort to fight the moves of state utilities to put the enormously high storm costs on the backs of consumers. That includes the use of securitization and state bonds to spread the costs over two decades or longer.

Former Jailer Pleads Guilty to Inmate Abuse Charge

A one-time sergeant at the Grady County jail pleads guilty to a federal charge of using unreasonable force against an inmate. Johnnie Drewery faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The incident happened in July of 2020. KSWO-TV cites court documents filed by FBI investigators that say Drewery was in charge of changing an inmate into a suicide smock and moving him into a holding cell where the inmate spit on him. Drewery then demanded the door be re-opened and he punched and kneed the inmate causing the inmate to suffer a fractured rib. Drewery’s formal sentencing will be held within the next three months.

 

Murder Trial Scheduled for Caddo County Man

A Caddo County man will stand trial for first degree murder. 20-year old John Paul Williams-Ryan is accused of the November, 2019 shooting death of 19-year old Payden McCullar that took place south of Apache. The Lawton Constitution reports that the cut-off date for a plea deal ended earlier this week and the trial is now scheduled to begin Feb. 28th.

 

Chix Fire Chief Discusses Department Expansion

There have been a number of recent retirements from the Chickasha Fire Department and the help-wanted sign is out. Chief Tony Samaniego says the department will be expanding for the first time since the mid-1980s.

Anadarko School Board to Sell Bonds

The board of education for Anadarko Public Schools will hold a special meeting tomorrow to consider a resolution to sell some previously approved general obligation bonds. University Fundraiser Tops Six Figures

A year-end fundraiser hits the six-figure mark for the University of Science and Arts. The December campaign brought in $120,000 all of which will be distributed to several areas. Officials say donations ranged from just a few dollars to $60,000. Vice President for Advancement JP Audas said that with state appropriations providing less than 35 percent of the university's annual operating budget, fundraisers like this help to bridge the gap to allow students to have a better college experience. The contributions will be going to the campus co-op food pantry; various alumni scholarships; the Neill-Wint Center for Neurodiversity; The John Feaver Student Success Fund, and others.

Grady County Sales Tax Revenues Show Mixed Results

Sales tax revenues in December for Grady County were the 4th highest month in 2021. It topped $520,000...and represents the purchases of taxable goods and services sold at retail outlets throughout the county last October. The December revenues were down about 12 percent from November - but up a huge 45 percent from December of 2020. The funds are distributed to several areas which were approved by voters. The Grady County Fairgrounds received $174,000; Grady Memorial Hospital collected $154,000; each of the seven senior nutrition centers received $13,000; and each of the 20 county fire districts picked up about $4,400. Tuttle EMS collected $16,000 and Rush Springs EMS received $4,000.

 

More Counties Added to Burn Ban List

There are now more than 30 counties in the state that have issued burn bans. Oklahoma County is one of the most recent areas to put a ban in effect. The only two counties in the region that do not have burn bans are McClain and Cleveland counties. There has been very little rain over the last few months, and January is typically the driest month of the year. The threat for wildfires will be up over the next couple of days, with winds out of the north today gusting to 40 miles per hour.

 

Update on Monday Crash in Amber

We have a follow-up regarding that semi accident that happened in Amber late Monday night. Amber Police Chief Daniel Fulton said it was a single vehicle accident...and a sand truck driver was seriously injured. Fulton said the truck was northbound on U.S. Highway 92...and was  traveling too fast to go around  a curve. The truck rolled on its side and slid several hundred feet. Fulton did not have the name of the driver, who was taken by air to an Oklahoma City hospital but his condition was unknown. Grady County sheriff's deputies and a state trooper assisted with traffic control, as the highway was narrowed to one lane through Amber for a couple of hours.

 

One Injured in 3-Vehicle Crash That Included Semi

One person is hospitalized in a three-vehicle crash which included a semi that happened south of Goldsby yesterday. 67-year old Ronald Coffman of Oklahoma City was admitted in fair condition at an Oklahoma City hospital. A Blanchard couple involved in the accident, 44-year old David Swanson and 38-year old Tiffany Swanson were not hurt. The accident happened just before 9 o'clock last night. The highway patrol reports that Coffman was southbound in the northbound lanes of I-35 then tried to make a U-turn. The Swanson's pickup and the semi both hit Coffman's truck. The trooper investigating the crash reported that Coffman was driving under the influence.

 

State Rep Appointed to National Panel

State Rep. Brad Boles (R-Marlow) will be serving on the Energy and Environment Committee on the Council of State Governments (CSG). Boles currently serves as chairman of the house energy and natural resources committee and was appointed to the CSG by house speaker Charles McCall. The CSG is the largest non-partisan group that serves all three branches of state elected and appointed officials. A press release indicates that the committee Boles will serve on hosts regional summits to exchange ideas for effective legislation, and organizes programs to create regional strategies to address common energy and environmental concerns. Oklahoma City will host the group's southern legislative conference this summer.

City of Chickasha Prepares to Move Water Lines

in Conjuction with the U.S. Highway 81 West Bypass

A proposal for the City of Chickasha and the State Department of Transportation to jointly spend nearly $1 million to re-locate city-owned water lines will be discussed by the city council tonight. Background information provided to the council shows this is the first of a three-phase project to re-locate the water lines in connection with U.S. Highway 81 west bypass project. ODOT is expected to pay about 60 percent of the total cost, or about $575,000. The first phase is just under $500,000 and includes installing new fire hydrants and valves on the line along the west city limits about a half-mile north of Iowa Avenue; relocating about 530 feet of water line along the west city limits at Iowa Avenue; and about 900 feet of water line along U.S. Highway 62 at U.S. Highway 81. Four bids were received for this phase and officials are recommending the low bid submitted by Miller Construction of Comanche.

 

Chix City Council to Discuss Lawsuit; OK CPR Equipment Purchase

The council will go behind closed doors to discuss a lawsuit filed against the city last year by the Water Quality Division of the state Department of Environmental Quality. The panel is expected to waive bidding requirements and authorize the purchase of nearly $80,000 in automated CPR equipment from a sole source provider (Stryker). The funds come from Grady County's American Rescue Plan Act monies. The group is also expected to approve the receipt of a $2,400 grant from the Gary Sinise Foundation to provide privatized mental health services. The council will also consider appointing James Schoppa to the Planning Commission. The commission had a vacancy after former member Nate McCalla was appointed to the city council. The city council meets at 6:30 tonight at city hall.

 

One Injured After Semi Topples onto Mail Vehicle

One person was reportedly injured when a semi overturned on a mail delivery vehicle in Amber. The highway patrol reports that the accident happened about 10:00 p.m. last night. No details about the accident were available from the highway patrol as they were called in to assist Amber authorities. There was no word on how seriously the individual was hurt.

 

Anadarko Re-Instates Mask Mandates in City Buildings

The City of Anadarko is again requiring that individuals wear masks when entering city buildings. Officials cite the rising corona virus infection rate as the reason. A post on the city's Facebook page indicates that masks are required regardless of vaccination status and is designed to protect the public and city employees. The mask mandate is in effect until further notice.

 

Future Geothermal Demo Funding Projects Threatened

Continued funding of a federal program for geothermal demonstration projects could be in jeopardy. While OU recently received such a grant to develop geothermal heat from oil and gas wells near Tuttle, additional funding and billions of dollars in tax incentives and research funding nationwide are in limbo. The website OK Energy Today cites the information in a report from Politico. More Oil, Gas Drilling Permits Approved

More permits to drill for oil and gas in the region get the approval of the Corporation Commission. Citizen Energy Company obtained two permits to drill in the STACK play in Canadian County. One will be just south of Union City and the other in the southwest part of the county between Union City and Hinton. Camino Natural Resources and Continental Resources have received permits to drill in the SCOOP play in Stephens County. Both are in an area northeast of Velma.

Red Cross Issues National Blood Emergency

A national blood emergency has been issued by the American Red Cross. It's the first time in the agency's history that a national emergency has been declared. Officials say the omicron variant of the coronavirus has caused the worst blood shortage in more than 10 years. Officials also say doctors are being forced to make difficult decisions about  who gets blood transfusions and who will have to wait until the products become available. Misti McClellan with the Red Cross which services central and southwest Oklahoma says they are simply unable to supply hospitals with the amount of blood they need.

 

              

 

She says the agency normally has a five-day supply of blood available but that has dwindled down to a one-day supply. She said there is a big need for O-negative blood which is a universal blood type that can be used no matter what blood type an individual may be.

 

New Interchange Design Chosen for Busy Norman Area

A new design for a highway interchange at I-35 and State Highway 9 in Norman has been selected by the state department of transportation. ODOT says the design is known as a diverging diaming interchange which was was selected after input from the public and stakeholders. The option was the preferred choice of the City of Newcastle and the town of Goldsby and is expected to alleviate traffic backups on southbound I-35 during peak travel times. Officials say the traffic volume in that area is about 82,000 vehicles per day and its projected it could reach nearly 130,000 vehicles per day by the year 2050. The estimated cost of the interchange is about $20 million and it is scheduled to go to bid next year.

 

Bullock Memorial Center holds MLK Drive-Thru Fundraiser

Today is Martin Luther King, Jr Day. It’s a federal holiday with city, county, state, and federal offices closed to commemorate the life of the slain civil rights leader. He led a more than year-long bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama and in August of 1963 delivered his 'I Have a Dream' address to more than 250,000 civil rights supporters at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. In 1964 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, and in 1968 was assassinated at the age of 39. Chickasha's Bullock Memorial Center is marking the day with a fund-raiser for its programs. They'll be serving drive-through meals of chicken wings, beans, cornbread, dessert, and drink for $10 per plate. The serving time will be from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The center is located at 917 S. 1^st.

State Panel Wants Utilities to Provide Information

on Who 'Gets Rich' From the 2021 February Freeze

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission wants to know who is profiting from the huge increases in energy costs that were a result of the deep freeze which occurred in February of last year. The panel is asking utility companies including PSO and OG&E to provide that information. The Oklahoman and our partners at KWTV News 9 report that officials want to know who got rich as prices for natural gas, transportation, and storage spiked - and even financial penalties that were charged. One official said those costs are typically not provided saying it is believed it would disrupt the competitive bidding process. State lawmakers approved a measure that allows energy companies to obtain long-term bonds to pay the estimated $4.5 billion in heating costs that led to a shortage of natural gas needed to produce electricity. There were also rolling black-outs throughout Oklahoma and Texas. The monthly bills of customers some of the larger energy companies like PSO and OG&E will be increasing between $4 and $5 a month for the next 20 to 30 years to pay for those costs. The state's 10 largest public utility companies were asked to provide the information. They have 20 days to do so or explain why they can't.

 

Homeless Man Suspected in Burglary, Assault

A homeless Chickasha man is behind bars for violating a protective order and breaking into a relative's home. Chickasha Police arrested 30-year old Roger Gavin Roach after the relative called authorities saying Roach entered her home, woke her up, and assaulted her. A probable cause affidavit indicates she has had an active protective order against Roach for more than two years. Prosecutors have charged Roach with felony counts of burglary and violation of a protective order. He remains in jail on a $15,000 bond.

Chix' Sales Tax Revenues May be a Record

A new report shows the City of Chickasha may have had its best month ever for sales tax revenues. The report from the Oklahoma Tax Commission shows the city received more than $1.2 million this month. The sales taxes come from consumer spending at retail outlets during the last half November and projected retail business for the first half of December. The total represents estimated consumer spending of $32 million at Chickasha stores during that 30-day period. The $1.2 million is up more than 30 percent from the same time period last year, and up about 20 percent from the pre-COVID period of 2019. The city also collected more than $63,000 in hotel-motel tax revenue in October of last year, which is more than triple from the previous year but down about 15 percent from 2019. A summary of the city's economic indicators compiles by the Chickasha Economic Development Council shows unemployment for November at 1.7 percent, and that the city issued three commercial and 13 residential building permits in December. There were 10 building permits for remodeling projects and three for new single-family homes.

 

Multi-County Drug Ring Arrests Made

Drug agents have broken up another multi-county drug ring. This one including suspected drug traffickers operating in Grady, Stephens, Comanche, Jefferson, and Pontotoc counties. District Attorney Jason Hicks said a number of law enforcement agencies including his District 6 Drug and Violent Crimes Task Force and the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics had been investigating the group's drug activity for more than a year. Hicks said agents seized more than 1,200 grams of meth, nearly 250 grams of heroin, multiple pills laced with fentanyl, and some firearms.

 

State Senator Chastises Second Amendment Group Director

State Senator Lonnie Paxton of Tuttle says the leader of a state group supporting the Constitutional right to bear arms should be removed after the individual made some controversial comments. Paxton, who is the chairman of the Senate Public Safety Committee, said the comments were made by Don Spencer, the director of the Oklahoma Second Amendment Association. Paxton said the comments could put the lives of state lawmakers and other elected officials in danger. In a prepared statement, Paxton said Spencer told an audience that “we win at the ballot box so we don't have to go to the ammo box.” Paxton while he supports the work of the association, Spencer's comment crossed every conceivable line of decency and that the words can be seen as a direct threat against elected state officials and even city council and school board members.

 

Suspicious Caddo County Death Under Investigation

The OSBI is investigating the suspicious death of a woman whose body was found outside of Apache this week. The body of 38-year old Crystal Thiessen was found in a field behind a home in the Stecker area Tuesday. Investigators say there appeared to be a campfire and the body had been burned. The state medical examiner's office is working to determine how Thiessen died.

County Commissioner's Embezzlement Trial Re-scheduled

District One Grady County Commissioner Mike Walker has had his embezzlement trial pushed back. The trial was supposed to begin this month but has been re-scheduled for March 21st. Walker is facing the charge for allegedly using about $30,000 in county funds and resources to make improvements to a private road on which Walker lives. Walker has pleaded not guilty to the charge and has remained on the job since the charge was filed last May. Walker has a new attorney handling his case....Bret Burns. Our partners at KWTV-New 9 report that a group of current and former employees at District One are preparing to file a civil lawsuit against Walker. News 9 reports that attorney Mark Hammons represents five individuals who allege they were fired or harassed by Walker after they spoke with investigators.

 

Chix City Council to Hold Special Meeting, Work Session

Discussions of proposed fee increases at Chickasha city hall and planning for road projects are on tap in a couple of special gatherings for the city council tonight. The panel will hold a special work session to discuss fees, road projects, replacing street signs, and hear a report on improvements at the wastewater treatment plant. The work session will also include discussion on the concessions contract at the sports complex. The council will also have a brief special meeting to consider an ordinance that would increase small purchases for the city from  $1,000 to $5,000 and an emergency clause to enact the change if approved. The council will meet at 5:30 tonight at city hall.

 

New ISP Begins Chix Home Installations  

Chickasha residents will soon have a new option for an internet service provider. Hillary Communications has announced that installation of fiber-to-the-home broadband service is underway. The service is first being installed at city hall, after the city council approved a bid for the service for all city-owned buildings. More than 100 homes are expected to be hooked up by the end of the month. A news release from the company says its fiber-to-the-home service provides customers with one of the fastest and most reliable broadband services on the market. It is expected to allow users to stream video as well as download and upload large files quickly. Individuals can pre-register for fiber installation by visiting the website hillcom.net/chickasha

 

Church to Open Community Clothes Closet

A Chickasha church will be opening a clothing closet to serve the community. Michigan Avenue Baptist Church will hold a grand opening on Saturday. The church will have gently-used clothing and household items available for those in need. The grand opening will be at the church Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Starting next week, the clothes closet will be open every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon and every third Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon. The church is located at 8th and Michigan Avenue. Home Intruder is Fatally Shot by Resident

In what the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) is calling a homicide, an intruder forced his way into a Chickasha home and was shot and killed by one of the residents. State and local investigators spent all day yesterday gathering evidence at the home near 5th and Missouri Avenue. Chickasha police initially responded to a 9-1-1 call made by the resident just after 5:00 a.m. The OSBI reported that the suspect who was fatally shot was also responsible for crashing a vehicle into the KFC restaurant just a couple of blocks away then driving the vehicle across neighboring yards, and backing into and striking the home where the shooting occurred. The man went to several nearby homes banging on windows and doors. One of the residents came out to see what was going on an encountered the suspect. The suspect then assaulted the man's wife and forced his way into the home. The resident then fatally shot the intruder. The intruder's name has not been released and the residents are cooperating with the investigation.

 

Fire Damages Motorcyle, ATV Dealership

Last night, a massive fire races through the warehouse and shop areas of a Chickasha motorcycle and ATV dealership causing perhaps millions of dollars in damage. Multiple fire departments were dispatched to Morris Motorsports at U.S. Highway 81 and Pikes Peak Road just after 6 o'clock last night. Ninnekah, Pioneer, and Chickasha fire departments all responded with numerous fire trucks and personnel. Grady County Fire Chief Perry Wenzel said the show room did not sustain any damage however the warehouse and shop areas sustained heavy fire, smoke, and water damage. Crews were initially on the scene for about four hours but were called back about 2 o'clock this morning when the fire re-kindled.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

 

Man Escapes Fire That Destroys Mobile Home

A Grady County man escapes a fire that destroyed his mobile home and all of its contents. The fire broke out about 4:30 Tuesday morning west of Rush Springs and not far from the Farwell Fire Department. Grady County Fire Chief Perry Wenzel said the home was fully engulfed when fire crews arrived. The man living in the trailer was unhurt. Sparks from a fireplace are suspected of causing the blaze.

 

Wildland Fire Scorches 100 Acres Near Landfill

Four volunteer fire departments were summoned to a wildland fire near the Alex landfill Tuesday. The Ninnekah, Alex, Bradley, and Bailey volunteer departments were dispatched to the fire about 10:30 a.m. about three miles south of the landfill. No property was threatened. Grady County Fire Chief Perry Wenzel said the fire scorched about 100 acres and crews spent a couple of hours dousing the flames. The cause of the fire appeared to be a flare from an oil and gas location.

 

Mother Faces Child Neglect Charges

An infant and two toddlers are left at home alone and their mother has been arrested and charged with child neglect. Chickasha police were called to a home in the 200 block of South 11th early Monday morning to do a welfare check on the children. The officer saw a seven-month old lying face down on a blanket and two-year old twins in the home with no adult supervision. It was believed the children had been left alone about an hour. A police affidavit indicates that officers had previous knowledge about the mother, 28-year old Caitlin Lea Long. Other officers located Long in her van and made a traffic stop and she was reportedly intoxicated. Long was arrested and the children released to relatives. Long has formally been charged with felony child neglect and remains in jail on a $30,000 bond.

 

Some Chickasha School Students Go to Remote-Learning

Students at Chickasha's Grand Elementary school are moving to remote learning today and for the rest of the week. Superintendent Rick Croslin said it’s due to the number of staff and students who are ill. Croslin sent a letter home to parents saying that Chromebooks and hot spots are available for students to use at home. Students who have a technology device release form on file were allowed to take Chromebooks home yesterday. Others can pick-up their devices at school until noon today. The students will return to classes next Tuesday, Jan. 18th. There is no school Monday because of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.

 

Panel OKs Funding for Sports Complex Improvements

The Chickasha Industrial Authority yesterday approved using nearly $94,000 in funds to help the city pay for upgrades at the Chickasha Sports Complex. Chickasha Parks and Recreation Department Director Kyle Marks expects the work to begin in a few weeks and hopes it can be completed before the start of the busy spring and summer baseball, softball, and soccer seasons.

OSBI, Chix Police Investigate 'Incident'

(UPDATE - The OSBI reports a suspect in a home invasion was shot and killed by a resident in the home. This story will be updated on Wednesday, January 12th)

Chickasha police are investigating an unspecified incident that was called in this morning. Officers were called to a home at 5th and Missouri just after 6:00 a.m. The home and area around it is cordoned off with crime scene tape and 5th Street between Missouri and Florida Avenues is closed to through traffic. Arrests Made After Police Officer Shot

Three people are in custody in connection with the shooting of Lawton police officer. A Blue Alert was issued Monday afternoon after the officer was shot during a high-speed pursuit that went from Lawton to Apache and Lake Ellsworth. The Lawton Constitution reports that the pursuit began when Lawton police were watching a home for suspected drug activity and began following some suspects as they drove away. Apache schools were placed on lockdown as the chase reached that community. The shots were fired by the suspects after they ran a road block with the gunshots striking the Lawton officer and his car. The unidentified officer was taken to a hospital where he was treated and released. The suspects were all taken to the Comanche County jail on unspecified complaints. The investigation has been turned over to the OSBI.

 

Burn Bans Extended in at Least Two Counties

Burn bans in Grady County and Caddo counties have been extended. Commissioners in both counties are continuing the bans through Jan. 24th.  Weather conditions over the next few days will be such that it won't take much for wildland fires to spread quickly.  

 

Chix Group Meets to Discuss Funds for Sports Complex Upgrades

Officials with the Chickasha Industrial Authority will meet this morning to consider providing nearly $94,000 in funds to pay for upgrades at the Chickasha Sports Complex. The panel will hold a special meeting at the bottom of the hour (7:30 a.m.) to consider the proposal. Last week, the city council approved a bid from United Turf and Track of Arcadia, Oklahoma - provided the funds be approved by the Industrial Authority.

 

Public Hearing Today for Chix Boat, RV Storage Ordinance

Changes in the City of Chickasha's boat and recreational vehicle storage ordinance will be discussed in a public hearing by the city's Planning Commission this afternoon. The city council postponed a decision on some changes in the ordinance late last year to allow for further discussion about some of the proposed modifications. It's the only issue to be reviewed by the Planning Commission today.

 

New Time, Location for Next Week's County Commish Meeting

Grady County commissioners have changed their meeting time and location for next week. The panel was originally scheduled to meet at the county courthouse at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 18^th but will now meet in the community building at the Grady County Fairgrounds at 9:30 a.m. The meeting will be held Tuesday morning as the courthouse is closed Monday for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.

Burn Bans Expected to Continue

With warm temperatures and another week of dry weather in the forecast, county officials throughout the state will likely continue burn bans which have been in place for the last few weeks. Burn bans are now in place in 25 Oklahoma counties. There has been no rain in this region in the last seven days and no rain is in the forecast for the upcoming week. The U.S. Drought Monitor continues to show much of the area in either a D2 or D3 drought designation which indicate extreme to severe drought. Individuals who violate the burn ban can be charged with a misdemeanor and sentenced to up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine if convicted.

 

Policy Updates, Heat and Air Work Talks set for Chix School Board

Updates of sexual harassment and civil rights policies within the Chickasha school district will be considered by the board of education tonight. Superintendent Rick Croslin is recommending that the panel approve the updates issued by the Center for Education Law. The panel will consider some change orders in some heat and air work including replacing the system at the hospitality room at Myers Fieldhouse and the middle school band room. The group will recognize robotics instructor Brandon Willis for being selected as the State Coach of the Year by the Oklahoma First LEGO League. The school board will also recognize the Chicken Express Employees of the Month who work at the high school. They are teacher Jen Jantzen and support employee Pam Brandt. The school board meets at 6 o'clock tonight at the school administration building.

 

Grady County Fairgrounds to Continue Hectic Schedule

The Grady County Fairgrounds hosted more than 350 event days last year and officials say they are on track for even more activities this year. Director Andy Maher says the Oklahoma High School and Junior High School Rodeo Associations will again hold their state finals there and another multi-day national junior cattle show will be held this summer. Maher said the word continues to spread across the country about the assets of the fairgrounds.

 

              

 

Events scheduled over the next few weeks include the Southwest Oklahoma Toy Show January 29th; the Southwest District Livestock Show February 8th through the 12th; and the Grady County Junior Livestock Show February 28th through March 3rd.

 

Anadarko Property Owners, Residents Asked to Clean Alleys

The City of Anadarko is asking residents and property owners to clear out their alley ways. Tree limbs, brush, trash, and other debris will have to be removed or property owners will face fines issued by the city's Code Enforcement Department. A post on the city's Facebook page indicates that officials will be driving the alleys over the next few weeks and property owners who are in violation of the ordinance will have notices mailed to them. Individuals will have 10 days in which to remove the debris before enforcement action begins. Officials say with the potential of experiencing hazardous and damaging winter weather over the next few weeks, it’s important that the alleys remain clear so utility crews have access through them. Property owners and individuals can take limbs and brush to the airport while any trash or bulky items can be taken to the city roll-off site Thursday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to noon or 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Property owners will have to show their utility bills to use the service.

Ex-con on Probation is a Suspect Connected to New Crimes

A man on probation for committing violent crimes is a suspect in some new crimes just weeks after he was released from prison. He is also believed to be the man injured in an officer-involved shooting near Verden last week. 33-year old Garrick Boyiddle was released from prison last September. He served five years of a nearly nine-year sentence for assault with a weapon. Caddo County authorities issued arrest warrants for Boyiddle in November and December in connection with two separate investigations by Anadarko police. The most recent investigation was after Boyiddle was identified as a suspect who shot a man outside the Anadarko Dollar General Store on Christmas Eve. Then just a few days later, Boyiddle is reported to have been the driver of a vehicle that led authorities on a pursuit from Anadarko to Verden - where the driver was hospitalized after being injured in the officer-involved shooting. Boyiddle remains in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and will be taken into custody when he's medically cleared. The OSBI is investigating the officer-involved shooting. Grady County authorities say one of their deputies, and officers from the Verden and Anadarko police departments were involved in the shooting. None of them have been identified. A state trooper involved in the pursuit was not involved in the officer-involved shooting.

 

Crash Injures Two Drivers, One in Serious Condition

A Caddo County man is in serious condition and another suffered minor injuries in a Friday traffic accident. 67-year old Michael Roper of Hinton was taken to an Oklahoma City hospital with internal injuries. 62-year old William Bartlebaugh of Ft. Cobb was taken to a Yukon hospital where he was treated and released. The accident happened on State Highway 152 between Cogar and Minco near the Grady and Caddo county line just before 8:00 a.m. Friday. The highway patrol reports that Roper attempted to make a U-turn and his truck was broadsided by the van driven by Bartlebaugh. Both men were wearing their seat belts.

 

Energy Firm Issued Drilling Permits; Announces Well Completion

An Oklahoma-based energy company has been issued permits to drill for oil and gas in the region. Citizen Energy of Tulsa has the go-ahead to drill five wells including three on a single pad south of Mustang. That’s just north of the Canadian River along State Highway 4. The company has also received a permit to drill a few miles northwest of that location, and an amended permit to drill south of Union City. Citizen also filed a completion report for a well on the same Union City site. The well is bringing in more than 200 barrels of oil and more than 1,500 Mcf of natural gas per day. The well was drilled to a depth of nearly 19,000 feet.

Hospitals Say Don't Go to the Emergency Room for COVID Testing

Grady Memorial Hospital is among many hospitals across the state urging people to not go to the emergency room if they want a COVID-19 test. Officials say due to the mutation of the virus some infusions are not effective against the omicron variant. Hospital officials say to get coronavirus testing at their primary care physician, quick-care clinics, or local health departments.

 

Verden Casino Held-up at Knife-point

Someone held up the Kiowa Casino near Verden at knife-point earlier this week and investigators are offering a big reward for information about the individual(s) responsible. The Bureau of Indian Affairs is offering $2,000 for tips that lead to the arrest and capture of the suspect. BIA Chief Micah Ware said a masked individual walked into the casino about 12:40 a.m. Tuesday, January 4th. An undisclosed amount of cash was taken mainly in denominations of $20 and $100 bills. There is video surveillance of the individual who is believed to be a short male. Anyone with information is asked to call Chief Ware at 405-638-4413 or BIA Dispatch in Anadarko at 405-247-6712. You will not have to give your name.

 

Crews Battle Frigid Weather to Repair Water Line Break

A water line break near Grand Elementary School kept Chickasha city crews busy during the bitter sub-freezing temperatures yesterday. The break was reported about 9:00 a.m. and crews isolated the problem to 15th Street between Grand Avenue and Missouri Avenue. Traffic in the area was detoured because of the icy conditions caused by the freezing water running down the street. An undetermined number of homes had low or no water pressure until the break was repaired. Officials say they were able complete the project just before 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon.

 

Two Chix Police Officers Earn Promotions

Two Chickasha police officers have been promoted following the retirement of Lt. Scott Weaver. Gillian O'Brien was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and Lauren Jewell was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. It's the first time in the history of the department for women to be in all ranks of leadership. Chief Dee Rowell said she struggled her way throughout her career and says there are still barriers for women in law enforcement today. Nationwide only about one in eight full-time police officers are women. O'Brien has been with the department for nearly 14 years and is now the commander of one of the midnight shifts. She will continue helping get grants for the communications department while training Jewell on recruiting and training processes. Jewell has been with the department for nearly 12 years and will be supervising the communications department and training others to manage the sex offender registry.

Southwest Oklahoma Firm Announces Growth

2022 is off to a great start for Hillary Communications and the Hillary Media Group. The companies have announced the acquisition of two telecommunications companies and several statewide media outlets. The communications side acquired Southwest Telephone Company and Southwest Oklahoma Telephone Company (aka SWOI Wireless) which serve southwest Oklahoma. The acquisitions have the approval of all regulatory agencies. Dustin Hillary, the managing partner of Hillary Communications, said in a press release that the acquisition continues the company's core mission to improve internet access and quality across rural America. The Hillary Media Group has acquired the Radio Oklahoma Ag Network, Oklahoma Farm Report, Oklahoma Energy Today, and Road to Rural Prosperity news sites. Their collective names will change to the Rural Oklahoma Network. Long-time ag news broadcaster Ron Hays and other well-known broadcasters including Jerry Bohnen will remain with the network.

 

Judge Recommends Corp. Comm. Approve PSO Plan

A plan to allow Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO) to spread its costs from last year's massive freeze over two decades is being recommended for approval. At the end of a day-long hearing at the Oklahoma Corporation Commission yesterday, an administrative law judge told the panel that his decision was one of the hardest of his career and that he took no pleasure in making the recommendation. The website OK Energy Today reports that Judge Dustin Mercer urged the Corporation Commission to adopt the proposal which would result in a more than $4 per month increase for ratepayers over a 20-year period. That's on top of a previously approved rate hike for PSO, meaning rate payers would see an overall increase of between $9 and $10 per month if the panel approves the recommendation. Commissioners are expected to vote on the proposal in the near future.

 

Suspect May Enter Plea to Child Pornography Charges

A Caddo County man is expected to plead guilty to several counts of possession of child pornography. 66-year old Dave Olen Carter of Apache is slated to enter the plea before District Judge Kory Kirkland next week. Carter was charged following an OSBI investigation that lasted for more than a year. The Lawton Constitution reports that the agency was looking into allegations of child molestation in 2018. Investigators confiscated a computer from Carter's home and arrested him in May of 2019. Carter faces up to 20 years in prison and a $25,000 fine on each of six counts.

 

Chix Fire Department Accepting Applications

The Chickasha Fire Department is seeking applicants interested in being a firefighter/EMT and firefighter/paramedic. A Facebook post indicates that the department is expanding for the first time in 35 years. They are seeking self-motivated, goal-oriented team players who want to work in a fast-paced environment. PSO Customers to Learn of Monthly Bill Increase

Stemming from the 2021 Polar Vortex Issue

A settlement between Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO) and the Oklahoma Corporation Commission regarding the tremendous heating costs related to last year’s record- breaking cold weather could be wrapped up today.  The issue was supposed to be finalized during the commission’s meeting on Monday. However, the issue was postponed to today (Wednesday) as PSO and other parties wanted time to file the appropriate paperwork. PSO was asking for more than $57 million in carrying charges and a 20-year bond plan which would result in a $4 per month increase for PSO customers who use 1,100 kilowatt hours of electricity each cycle. The hearing resumes this morning in Oklahoma City.

 

Shooting Suspect Sought in Anadarko

Anadarko police are looking for a man they say shot another while the victim was shopping on Christmas Eve. Authorities have issued an arrest warrant for 34-year old Garrick Boyiddle who is facing a felony charge of shooting with intent to kill. Our partners at KWTV News 9 report that Boyiddle and the victim served time in prison together. T.he victim told investigators he believed he was shot because he made a mistake while they were behind bars. The victim also said Boyiddle is a member of the Indian Brotherhood Gang. Boyiddle is still on probation for a previous assault with a dangerous weapon conviction. Anadarko Police Chief Eric Harlan said Boyiddle is not someone they want on the streets.

 

Chickasha Resident Joins Police Department

A new police officer was sworn in to serve and protect Chickasha residents. Marcus Nieto joined the police department a couple of weeks ago and he took his oath of office yesterday. Nieto is a Chickasha native, a graduate of Chickasha High School, and also attended USAO and St. Gregory's University. The last seven years he was employed at Livestock Nutrition Center. Nieto be attending CLEET training in Oklahoma City for the next several weeks. Marcus and his wife Rebecca have three children.

 

Anadarko Road Project Resumes

After several months of delays, road crews are back in Anadarko to finish work on the McLemore Road (formerly Petree Road) project between Mission Boulevard and State Highway 8. The project was put on hold after guard rails for a bridge over a creek were lost in New Orleans during Hurricane Ida in October. City officials say the work is expected to be completed next week.

 

Rural Areas to be Served by Health Department Mobile Units

State department of health mobile units will be in Binger, Elgin and several other southwest Oklahoma communities this month. The mobile wellness unit will make a dozen stops throughout Caddo, Comanche, Kiowa, and seven other counties. The Mobile ‘Health-on-the-Go’ unit is part of a statewide fleet developed to help under-served rural areas. The mobile unit will be in Binger next Thursday, Jan. 13th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Church of God.  It will be in Elgin on Tuesday, January 18th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the parking lot of I Street and 2nd Street.

Driver Admits Drinking Prior to Causing Fatal Crash

A driver accused of causing a head-on crash near Purcell that killed three people last month is reported to have been drinking before the crash occurred. Reports indicate that 39-year old Patricia Lynn McCloed was drinking THC-laced vodka for medical reasons. McCloed was recently released from the hospital after being treated for injuries she suffered in the crash. Our partners at KWTV News 9 reported that McClain County prosecutors have charged her with three counts of manslaughter and she surrendered to authorities after she left the hospital. Her bond was set at $200,000. Court records indicate that McCloed's blood-alcohol level was 0.10. The accident claimed the lives of 39-year old Kimberly Hartline and two teenagers, 18-year old Madysun Faber and 15-year old Tyler Durham, all of whom were affiliated with the Dibble school district.

 

Burn Bans Extended in Several Counties

Burn bans remain in effect for many counties along the U.S. Highway 81 corridor and throughout much of Western Oklahoma. Grady County Commissioners yesterday extended ban for another week and will review the status each Monday morning until the fire threat eases. There are now 22 Oklahoma counties with burn bans in effect. In addition to Grady County, others along U.S. Highway 81 area with burn bans include Canadian, Stephens, and Jefferson counties. Other counties in the region with burn bans are Caddo, Comanche, and Garvin counties.

 

Chix City Council OKs Internet Provider Change

Improved internet service at Chickasha City Hall is expected to be available this week. Last night, the city council approved a contract with Hillary Communications to provide internet service at all city buildings. The contract is for just under $17,000. City Manager Tyler Brooks says the internet service from current provider Suddenlink has not been up to par.

 

              

 

City Hall, public works, the library, the sports complex, and the two fire stations will all be switching over to Hillary Communications internet service over the next few weeks.

 

New Chix City Councilman Takes Oath

A new city council representative was sworn in to office last night. Nate McCalla took his oath of office to fill a vacant seat in Ward 2. McCalla is a Chickasha native who moved away for a few years but returned about five years ago. McCalla works for the sales leadership team of a medical supply company. He spent a few months on the city's Planning Commission before being asked by Mayor Chris Mosley to serve on the council. McCalla says he'll spend a few weeks learning about city government  before he focuses on any specific issues.

 

              

 

McCalla and his wife Natalie have two small children. Natalie is also a Chickasha native.

 

Funerals Held for Veterans with No Claimed Relatives

Four unclaimed U.S. military servicemen will be laid to rest at the Ft. Sill National Cemetery today. They are Karl Neff, Jon Lewis, Raymond Stow, and David Bamberger – all of whom served in the Navy. Bamberger also spent some time in the Air Force. The cemetery and the Office of Veterans Affairs encouraged the public to attend the services.

New Rep May be Appointed to Chix City Council

The Chickasha City Council meets for the first time in 2022 tonight and the first time in about a month. The panel will consider appointing Nate McCalla to the vacant Ward 2 council post which was previously held by Clark Van Dyck. The panel will consider approving a nearly $17,000 contract with Hillary Communications to install broadband internet service at all city buildings. The city requested bids after having unspecified problems with current internet service provider, Suddenlink.

Panel to Consider Upgrades to Sports Complex

Also to be considered is a proposal to spend about $94,000 for field leveling and repairs at the Chickasha Sports Complex. Officials say the bid from United Turf and Track of Arcadia, Oklahoma is about $2,500 more than the low bid submitted by Simonize Sports Field Services of Mustang.  The United bid is being recommended because officials say its meets the minimum bid requirements provided in the bid package. The high bid came in at more than $230,000 from Mid America Sports Construction of Missouri.

Motorist Claims City Streets Damaged Car

The council is expected to deny a nearly $1,800 claim from Delores Campbell who said her car was damaged due to some bad streets. The panel will also recognize recently-retired police Lt. Scott Weaver, who spent more than 20 years with the department.

 

Probe of Fatal Crash Continues

There's no update regarding the investigation into a double-fatality accident that occurred between Tuttle and Newcastle on State Highway 37 last Thursday. The highway patrol reports that 36-year old Mariscka McCorkle of Blanchard was one of the crash victims. She was the driver of one of three vehicles involved in the deadly crash. Also killed was 19-year old Clayton Jones of Oklahoma City who was a passenger in one of the other vehicles. Two unidentified children riding with McCorkle - a 15-year old boy and an 11-year old girl - were last in good condition at an Oklahoma City hospital. Two Blanchard residents in the third vehicle involved were not hurt. They were identified as 61-year old Steven Jevons and 23-year old Emily Jevons.

 

Grady County Burn Ban Back on Commish Agenda

Grady County Commissioners will meet this morning to consider extending a burn ban the panel implemented last week. Grady County is among more than 20 counties which have put burn bans into effect over the last 30 days. Canadian, Caddo, Comanche, Stephens, and Garvin counties also have burn bans enacted. A number of wildland fires erupted last week including one that burned about 1,000 acres near Fletcher. The Chickasha area received about a half-inch of rain last week which is the only measurable precipitation that has fallen in the last three months. Much of the region is experiencing severe to extreme drought conditions and are in either a D-2 or D-3 drought designation according the U.S. Drought Monitor.

Ex-con on Probation is a Suspect Connected to New Crimes

A man on probation for committing violent crimes is a suspect in some new crimes just weeks after he was released from prison. He is also believed to be the man injured in an officer-involved shooting near Verden last week. 33-year old Garrick Boyiddle was released from prison last September. He served five years of a nearly nine-year sentence for assault with a weapon. Caddo County authorities issued arrest warrants for Boyiddle in November and December in connection with two separate investigations by Anadarko police. The most recent investigation was after Boyiddle was identified as a suspect who shot a man outside the Anadarko Dollar General Store on Christmas Eve. Then just a few days later, Boyiddle is reported to have been the driver of a vehicle that led authorities on a pursuit from Anadarko to Verden - where the driver was hospitalized after being injured in the officer-involved shooting. Boyiddle remains in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and will be taken into custody when he's medically cleared. The OSBI is investigating the officer-involved shooting. Grady County authorities say one of their deputies, and officers from the Verden and Anadarko police departments were involved in the shooting. None of them have been identified. A state trooper involved in the pursuit was not involved in the officer-involved shooting.

 

Crash Injures Two Drivers, One in Serious Condition

A Caddo County man is in serious condition and another suffered minor injuries in a Friday traffic accident. 67-year old Michael Roper of Hinton was taken to an Oklahoma City hospital with internal injuries. 62-year old William Bartlebaugh of Ft. Cobb was taken to a Yukon hospital where he was treated and released. The accident happened on State Highway 152 between Cogar and Minco near the Grady and Caddo county line just before 8:00 a.m. Friday. The highway patrol reports that Roper attempted to make a U-turn and his truck was broadsided by the van driven by Bartlebaugh. Both men were wearing their seat belts.

 

Energy Firm Issued Drilling Permits; Announces Well Completion

An Oklahoma-based energy company has been issued permits to drill for oil and gas in the region. Citizen Energy of Tulsa has the go-ahead to drill five wells including three on a single pad south of Mustang. That’s just north of the Canadian River along State Highway 4. The company has also received a permit to drill a few miles northwest of that location, and an amended permit to drill south of Union City. Citizen also filed a completion report for a well on the same Union City site. The well is bringing in more than 200 barrels of oil and more than 1,500 Mcf of natural gas per day. The well was drilled to a depth of nearly 19,000 feet.

Hospitals Say Don't Go to the Emergency Room for COVID Testing

Grady Memorial Hospital is among many hospitals across the state urging people to not go to the emergency room if they want a COVID-19 test. Officials say due to the mutation of the virus some infusions are not effective against the omicron variant. Hospital officials say to get coronavirus testing at their primary care physician, quick-care clinics, or local health departments.

 

Verden Casino Held-up at Knife-point

Someone held up the Kiowa Casino near Verden at knife-point earlier this week and investigators are offering a big reward for information about the individual(s) responsible. The Bureau of Indian Affairs is offering $2,000 for tips that lead to the arrest and capture of the suspect. BIA Chief Micah Ware said a masked individual walked into the casino about 12:40 a.m. Tuesday, January 4th. An undisclosed amount of cash was taken mainly in denominations of $20 and $100 bills. There is video surveillance of the individual who is believed to be a short male. Anyone with information is asked to call Chief Ware at 405-638-4413 or BIA Dispatch in Anadarko at 405-247-6712. You will not have to give your name.

 

Crews Battle Frigid Weather to Repair Water Line Break

A water line break near Grand Elementary School kept Chickasha city crews busy during the bitter sub-freezing temperatures yesterday. The break was reported about 9:00 a.m. and crews isolated the problem to 15th Street between Grand Avenue and Missouri Avenue. Traffic in the area was detoured because of the icy conditions caused by the freezing water running down the street. An undetermined number of homes had low or no water pressure until the break was repaired. Officials say they were able complete the project just before 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon.

 

Two Chix Police Officers Earn Promotions

Two Chickasha police officers have been promoted following the retirement of Lt. Scott Weaver. Gillian O'Brien was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and Lauren Jewell was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. It's the first time in the history of the department for women to be in all ranks of leadership. Chief Dee Rowell said she struggled her way throughout her career and says there are still barriers for women in law enforcement today. Nationwide only about one in eight full-time police officers are women. O'Brien has been with the department for nearly 14 years and is now the commander of one of the midnight shifts. She will continue helping get grants for the communications department while training Jewell on recruiting and training processes. Jewell has been with the department for nearly 12 years and will be supervising the communications department and training others to manage the sex offender registry.

Southwest Oklahoma Firm Announces Growth

2022 is off to a great start for Hillary Communications and the Hillary Media Group. The companies have announced the acquisition of two telecommunications companies and several statewide media outlets. The communications side acquired Southwest Telephone Company and Southwest Oklahoma Telephone Company (aka SWOI Wireless) which serve southwest Oklahoma. The acquisitions have the approval of all regulatory agencies. Dustin Hillary, the managing partner of Hillary Communications, said in a press release that the acquisition continues the company's core mission to improve internet access and quality across rural America. The Hillary Media Group has acquired the Radio Oklahoma Ag Network, Oklahoma Farm Report, Oklahoma Energy Today, and Road to Rural Prosperity news sites. Their collective names will change to the Rural Oklahoma Network. Long-time ag news broadcaster Ron Hays and other well-known broadcasters including Jerry Bohnen will remain with the network.

 

Judge Recommends Corp. Comm. Approve PSO Plan

A plan to allow Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO) to spread its costs from last year's massive freeze over two decades is being recommended for approval. At the end of a day-long hearing at the Oklahoma Corporation Commission yesterday, an administrative law judge told the panel that his decision was one of the hardest of his career and that he took no pleasure in making the recommendation. The website OK Energy Today reports that Judge Dustin Mercer urged the Corporation Commission to adopt the proposal which would result in a more than $4 per month increase for ratepayers over a 20-year period. That's on top of a previously approved rate hike for PSO, meaning rate payers would see an overall increase of between $9 and $10 per month if the panel approves the recommendation. Commissioners are expected to vote on the proposal in the near future.

 

Suspect May Enter Plea to Child Pornography Charges

A Caddo County man is expected to plead guilty to several counts of possession of child pornography. 66-year old Dave Olen Carter of Apache is slated to enter the plea before District Judge Kory Kirkland next week. Carter was charged following an OSBI investigation that lasted for more than a year. The Lawton Constitution reports that the agency was looking into allegations of child molestation in 2018. Investigators confiscated a computer from Carter's home and arrested him in May of 2019. Carter faces up to 20 years in prison and a $25,000 fine on each of six counts.

 

Chix Fire Department Accepting Applications

The Chickasha Fire Department is seeking applicants interested in being a firefighter/EMT and firefighter/paramedic. A Facebook post indicates that the department is expanding for the first time in 35 years. They are seeking self-motivated, goal-oriented team players who want to work in a fast-paced environment. The application deadline is February 5th. Candidates can apply on-line at the City of Chickasha's website: www.chickasha.org

PSO Customers to Learn of Monthly Bill Increase

Stemming from the 2021 Polar Vortex Issue

A settlement between Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO) and the Oklahoma Corporation Commission regarding the tremendous heating costs related to last year’s record- breaking cold weather could be wrapped up today.  The issue was supposed to be finalized during the commission’s meeting on Monday. However, the issue was postponed to today (Wednesday) as PSO and other parties wanted time to file the appropriate paperwork. PSO was asking for more than $57 million in carrying charges and a 20-year bond plan which would result in a $4 per month increase for PSO customers who use 1,100 kilowatt hours of electricity each cycle. The hearing resumes this morning in Oklahoma City.

 

Shooting Suspect Sought in Anadarko

Anadarko police are looking for a man they say shot another while the victim was shopping on Christmas Eve. Authorities have issued an arrest warrant for 34-year old Garrick Boyiddle who is facing a felony charge of shooting with intent to kill. Our partners at KWTV News 9 report that Boyiddle and the victim served time in prison together. T.he victim told investigators he believed he was shot because he made a mistake while they were behind bars. The victim also said Boyiddle is a member of the Indian Brotherhood Gang. Boyiddle is still on probation for a previous assault with a dangerous weapon conviction. Anadarko Police Chief Eric Harlan said Boyiddle is not someone they want on the streets.

 

Chickasha Resident Joins Police Department

A new police officer was sworn in to serve and protect Chickasha residents. Marcus Nieto joined the police department a couple of weeks ago and he took his oath of office yesterday. Nieto is a Chickasha native, a graduate of Chickasha High School, and also attended USAO and St. Gregory's University. The last seven years he was employed at Livestock Nutrition Center. Nieto be attending CLEET training in Oklahoma City for the next several weeks. Marcus and his wife Rebecca have three children.

 

Anadarko Road Project Resumes

After several months of delays, road crews are back in Anadarko to finish work on the McLemore Road (formerly Petree Road) project between Mission Boulevard and State Highway 8. The project was put on hold after guard rails for a bridge over a creek were lost in New Orleans during Hurricane Ida in October. City officials say the work is expected to be completed next week.

 

Rural Areas to be Served by Health Department Mobile Units

State department of health mobile units will be in Binger, Elgin and several other southwest Oklahoma communities this month. The mobile wellness unit will make a dozen stops throughout Caddo, Comanche, Kiowa, and seven other counties. The Mobile ‘Health-on-the-Go’ unit is part of a statewide fleet developed to help under-served rural areas. The mobile unit will be in Binger next Thursday, Jan. 13th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Church of God.  It will be in Elgin on Tuesday, January 18th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the parking lot of I Street and 2nd Street.

Driver Admits Drinking Prior to Causing Fatal Crash

A driver accused of causing a head-on crash near Purcell that killed three people last month is reported to have been drinking before the crash occurred. Reports indicate that 39-year old Patricia Lynn McCloed was drinking THC-laced vodka for medical reasons. McCloed was recently released from the hospital after being treated for injuries she suffered in the crash. Our partners at KWTV News 9 reported that McClain County prosecutors have charged her with three counts of manslaughter and she surrendered to authorities after she left the hospital. Her bond was set at $200,000. Court records indicate that McCloed's blood-alcohol level was 0.10. The accident claimed the lives of 39-year old Kimberly Hartline and two teenagers, 18-year old Madysun Faber and 15-year old Tyler Durham, all of whom were affiliated with the Dibble school district.

 

Burn Bans Extended in Several Counties

Burn bans remain in effect for many counties along the U.S. Highway 81 corridor and throughout much of Western Oklahoma. Grady County Commissioners yesterday extended ban for another week and will review the status each Monday morning until the fire threat eases. There are now 22 Oklahoma counties with burn bans in effect. In addition to Grady County, others along U.S. Highway 81 area with burn bans include Canadian, Stephens, and Jefferson counties. Other counties in the region with burn bans are Caddo, Comanche, and Garvin counties.

 

Chix City Council OKs Internet Provider Change

Improved internet service at Chickasha City Hall is expected to be available this week. Last night, the city council approved a contract with Hillary Communications to provide internet service at all city buildings. The contract is for just under $17,000. City Manager Tyler Brooks says the internet service from current provider Suddenlink has not been up to par.

 

              

 

City Hall, public works, the library, the sports complex, and the two fire stations will all be switching over to Hillary Communications internet service over the next few weeks.

 

New Chix City Councilman Takes Oath

A new city council representative was sworn in to office last night. Nate McCalla took his oath of office to fill a vacant seat in Ward 2. McCalla is a Chickasha native who moved away for a few years but returned about five years ago. McCalla works for the sales leadership team of a medical supply company. He spent a few months on the city's Planning Commission before being asked by Mayor Chris Mosley to serve on the council. McCalla says he'll spend a few weeks learning about city government  before he focuses on any specific issues.

 

              

 

McCalla and his wife Natalie have two small children. Natalie is also a Chickasha native.

 

Funerals Held for Veterans with No Claimed Relatives

Four unclaimed U.S. military servicemen will be laid to rest at the Ft. Sill National Cemetery today. They are Karl Neff, Jon Lewis, Raymond Stow, and David Bamberger – all of whom served in the Navy. Bamberger also spent some time in the Air Force. The cemetery and the Office of Veterans Affairs encouraged the public to attend the services.

New Rep May be Appointed to Chix City Council

The Chickasha City Council meets for the first time in 2022 tonight and the first time in about a month. The panel will consider appointing Nate McCalla to the vacant Ward 2 council post which was previously held by Clark Van Dyck. The panel will consider approving a nearly $17,000 contract with Hillary Communications to install broadband internet service at all city buildings. The city requested bids after having unspecified problems with current internet service provider, Suddenlink.

Panel to Consider Upgrades to Sports Complex

Also to be considered is a proposal to spend about $94,000 for field leveling and repairs at the Chickasha Sports Complex. Officials say the bid from United Turf and Track of Arcadia, Oklahoma is about $2,500 more than the low bid submitted by Simonize Sports Field Services of Mustang.  The United bid is being recommended because officials say its meets the minimum bid requirements provided in the bid package. The high bid came in at more than $230,000 from Mid America Sports Construction of Missouri.

Motorist Claims City Streets Damaged Car

The council is expected to deny a nearly $1,800 claim from Delores Campbell who said her car was damaged due to some bad streets. The panel will also recognize recently-retired police Lt. Scott Weaver, who spent more than 20 years with the department.

 

Probe of Fatal Crash Continues

There's no update regarding the investigation into a double-fatality accident that occurred between Tuttle and Newcastle on State Highway 37 last Thursday. The highway patrol reports that 36-year old Mariscka McCorkle of Blanchard was one of the crash victims. She was the driver of one of three vehicles involved in the deadly crash. Also killed was 19-year old Clayton Jones of Oklahoma City who was a passenger in one of the other vehicles. Two unidentified children riding with McCorkle - a 15-year old boy and an 11-year old girl - were last in good condition at an Oklahoma City hospital. Two Blanchard residents in the third vehicle involved were not hurt. They were identified as 61-year old Steven Jevons and 23-year old Emily Jevons.

 

Grady County Burn Ban Back on Commish Agenda

Grady County Commissioners will meet this morning to consider extending a burn ban the panel implemented last week. Grady County is among more than 20 counties which have put burn bans into effect over the last 30 days. Canadian, Caddo, Comanche, Stephens, and Garvin counties also have burn bans enacted. A number of wildland fires erupted last week including one that burned about 1,000 acres near Fletcher. The Chickasha area received about a half-inch of rain last week which is the only measurable precipitation that has fallen in the last three months. Much of the region is experiencing severe to extreme drought conditions and are in either a D-2 or D-3 drought designation according the U.S. Drought Monitor.

Grady County Commissoners to Consider Burn Ban

Extremely warm and windy conditions will be around throughout the three-day Christmas holiday weekend. Near record-high temperatures are forecast  especially today and Sunday – and coupled with dry south winds gusting to 30 mph-plus - that will enhance the threat for wildfires in central and western regions. A number of counties have already implemented burn bans and Grady County could be next. County commissioners will consider a issuing a burn ban when they meet for their weekly meeting Monday morning. Eleven counties have burn bans in effect including Garvin, Stephens, Jefferson, and Carter counties in the south-central part of the state. Five counties in north central Oklahoma and two in the Panhandle also have burn bans in place.

 

Suspect Arrested in Connection with Caddo County Crimes

A suspect sought in connection with a number of crimes that took place in Carnegie this week is in custody and it’s not his first time to be arrested this year. The Caddo County Sheriff's Office says that 33-year old Clifford Guoladdle is in the Caddo County jail though details of his capture were not available. The sheriff's office posted on its Facebook page that they were seeking the public's help in identifying a man caught on video committing a number of crimes which included rummaging through a number of homes and pouring what was believed to be a flammable liquid on a pick-up and trying to set it on fire. Guoladdle is being held on a burglary complaint for his alleged involvement with these most recent accusations. Carnegie police arrested Guoladdle back in July for drug possession and he’s facing a felony charge in connection with that incident.

 

Grady Memorial Staff Encourage COVID Vaccinations

Doctors and staff members at Grady Memorial Hospital and the Five Oaks Medical Clinic are again urging individuals to get their coronavirus vaccinations. In a letter addressed to the community and signed by 30 staff members this week, officials say that Grady County is experiencing another steep rise in COVID cases and hospitalizations and that those being treated have not been vaccinated. Officials say all the hospital and clinic doctors, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants have had their shots and they urge everyone else to do so as well - even if individuals had a previous COVID infection or if they are healthy and young. They say it’s especially important because of the rising number of coronavirus variants that are spreading. Officials urge adults of all ages to get vaccinated and ask parents to vaccinate their children as young as five years of age.

 

EPA Seeks Take-Over of State Enviornmental Issues

A federal agency wants to take over an area being overseen by the State of Oklahoma.  Matt Skinner with the Oklahoma Corporation Commission has this report.

'Drive Sober, or Get Pulled Over' Campaign Underway

A lot of families will be on the road over the next week or so celebrating the holidays. Local and state law enforcement agencies will be focusing their attention on getting impaired drivers off the highways. Authorities say the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign is in force through Saturday, January 1st. Police departments, sheriff's offices, and state troopers will be watching for impaired motorists. They say not only is drunk driving illegal, it's a matter of life and death. Officials say that in 2019 more than 10,000 people died nationwide in accidents involving drunk or impaired drivers. That's almost one death every hour. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office say the holidays are a special time and ask drivers to commit to keeping the roads free of impaired motorists.

 

Man Finds Burglary Suspect in Camper

A Minco man surprises a burglar who broke into his camper. It happened Monday when the victim told Minco police he opened the door to his camper to find the suspected thief inside. The victim managed to keep the suspect at bay for a few moments while calling police. The suspect tried to leave but the victim followed him and an officer was on the scene moments later. A probable cause affidavit indicates the officer discovered the camper door had been pried open and its contents were thrown about or some destroyed. The suspect said he broke into the trailer to get out of the cold and he put on some clothing that was being kept inside because his were wet. The officer arrested 36-year old Travis Lee Sneed of Minco on a burglary complaint. Prosecutors have charged Sneed with felony burglary and he remains in the Grady County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 bond.

 

Anadarko Police Name Robbery Suspects;

One in Custody, One Remains at-Large

In Anadarko, one suspect is in custody and authorities are searching for a second man who robbed two women at a motel. The robbery took place at the Castle Inn on Thursday, Dec. 9th. The Lawton Constitution cites a probable cause affidavit from Anadarko police indicating the victims recognized two of three men who forced their way into their room. One of the men was armed with a knife and they got away with a bank card and a wallet. Earlier this week, arrest warrants were issued for 27-year old Jordan Lee Lindsey and 18-year old Seth Domebo both of Anadarko. Lindsey is in custody but authorities continue their search for Domebo. Lindsey spent some time in jail within the last couple of years after pleading guilty to misdemeanor assault and battery charges stemming from a 2018 arrest. He's being held in the Caddo County Jail on a $50,000 bond. Domebo was previously arrested by Anadarko police about a month ago and is facing a misdemeanor drug charge in connection with that incident.

 

Salvation Army Nears Red Kettle Drive Goal

Only two days remain in the Salvation Army's Red Kettle bell-ringing campaign. Officials with the Grady and Caddo County Salvation Army say they are very close to their goal of collecting more than $110,000 - all of which will be used to help needy families throughout 2022. Lt. Dig Deep to Help Needy Families

For the second straight year a Chickasha firm has partnered with its employees and subcontractors to help out the Salvation Army. CMS Willowbrook Development Company and its partners collected nearly $25,000 over the past month which will go directly to the Army's programs in the two counties. Workers at 14 jobsites took part. The crews on the Blanchard High School performing arts center project led the way with more than $5,100 in contributions. Running a close second was the crew on the Classen Curve project who brought in more than $5,000.

Regional Drilling Permits on the Rise

A number of permits to drill for oil and gas in the South Central Oklahoma Oil Province (SCOOP) play have been given the go-ahead. The Oklahoma Corporation Commission signed off on permits in Grady, McClain, and Canadian counties. The website OK Energy Today reports that Continental Resources received permits to drill five wells on a single pad east of Chickasha on State Highway 19 in section 17 of Township 6 North, Range 6 West. Gulfport MidCon has received permits to drill in two locations - one east of Rush Springs for a two-well pad in Section 31 of Township 4 North, Range 5 West, and another nearby in Section 30 of Township 4 North, Range 5 West. In McClain County south of Blanchard, Warwick Minerva received a permit to drill in Section 6 of Township 7 North, Range 4 West. In Canadian County, Citizen Energy received a permit to drill 18 wells on the same pad southwest of Mustang, and Chaparral Energy received a permit to drill east of El Reno along Route 66.

 

Caddo County Fire Destroys One Business, Damages Another

One business was destroyed and another had significant damage after a fire in Lookeba on Monday. A number of fire departments were called out to beat back the flames on the historic buildings which were more than 100 years old. The fire destroyed Holly J's Antiques and Treasures while CD's Soups and Sandwiches next door sustained a lot of smoke and water damage. Fire crews were on the scene for about two hours. Our partners at KWTV News 9 reported that the antique store received a $1,000 award from the Keep Oklahoma Beautiful non-profit group just last month. The sandwich shop will have some extensive repairs to make but they hope to reopen in a couple of months. Officials are still looking into the cause of the fire however they don't suspect arson.

 

Anadarko Awarded Grant for Sewer System Improvements

Some needed water and sewer line upgrades will be possible in Anadarko in the coming months thanks to a large grant. The Association of South Central Oklahoma Governments (ASCOG) has awarded the city a $45,000 grant from its Rural Economic Action Plan (REAP). The city will match that grant which will give the city a total of $90,000 to make the improvements. A post on the city's Facebook page says the city has experienced major infiltration of its sewer distribution system due to ground water and that the problem is worse during times of heavy rainfall. It causes the system to reach capacity for long periods of time. Engineers are recommending that the city replace manholes and concrete liners especially those that have vents and pick-holes in them. Mayor Kelly McGlothin says the city is grateful for the grant and that its one of many infrastructure projects underway.

Grady Memorial Hospital Sees Increase in COVID Cases

COVID numbers are rising across the country and Grady Memorial Hospital officials say it is not any different in this area. Hospital administrator Kean Spellman recently reported a shortage of beds for coronavirus patients and had to transfer one patient to a hospital in south Texas. Spellman said about 95 percent of those hospitalized were not vaccinated. Most coronavirus cases have had the Delta variant. There have not yet been any confirmed cases of the Omicron variant in Oklahoma which is said to be a milder strain but it spreads more quickly. Spellman said that in general the reasons for increases in the coronavirus haven’t changed. People who aren't vaccinated are choosing not to do so. Spellman said the hospital also continues to work with staffing shortages. He said a lot of health care professionals have decided to retire or simply leave the medical field.

 

Deputy Unhurt in Pursuit Crash; Cold, Wet Suspect Surrenders 

A Grady county deputy was uninjured after an accident during a weekend pursuit.  And the suspect eventually surrendered after trying to escape by wading across the Washita River in sub-freezing temperatures. Undersheriff Gary Boggess said that Deputies Brittany Mayer and Chris Kennell were both part of the chase in separate vehicles early Sunday morning. Mayer was patrolling near an oil lease in the area of State Highway 19 and Dell Street between Ninnekah and Alex where there had been some recent thefts. She spotted a vehicle without a tag light so she attempted to pull the driver over and that's when the chase began with speeds reaching 85 miles per hour on gravel roads. Kennell joined the pursuit and was behind the suspect vehicle when both came upon a large hole in the middle of the road. The suspect vehicle avoided the hole but because of the blowing dust Kennell didn't see it and crashed his 2020 Dodge Durango into it, causing a flat tire and some under-carriage damage.  The entire pursuit lasted about 15 minutes. The unidentified suspect abandoned his vehicle but gave himself up after being in the cold water with air temperatures in the 20-degree range. He told the deputies he tried to get away because he had been drinking. The suspect was turned over to the Lighthorse Police Department and taken to jail in another county. Boggess said the insurance company is still trying to  determine if the SUV will have to be totaled.

 

Chickasha Chamber of Commerce President Steps Down

The president of the Chickasha Chamber of Commerce will be stepping down at the end of the month. Cassandra Ersland-Robnett notified chamber leaders several weeks ago that she would be stepping down in order to focus on her family business. Brad Wilkerson, the chairman of the chamber's board of directors, said the chamber thrived under her leadership. Ersland-Robnett spent three years creating a number of projects that Wilkerson said were beneficial to the community. Among them are the Buy Chickasha campaigns; a Chamber Chatter podcast; Lunch and Learn programs, and the creation of the Successful Women's Breakfast and Video series. Ersland-Robnett thanks all chamber members, the board, and staff members she's worked with during her time. The chamber will undergo a re-organization with Ersland-Robnett's departure. Starting January 1st, Economic Development Council President Jim Cowan will oversee the chamber operations as well as continue EDC work and Festival of Light manager Whitney Palesano will be moving into chamber membership development and a new Festival of Light director will be hired. Cassie Poole will remain as the chamber's marketing manager. A reception for Ersland-Robnett will be Thursday, December 23rd from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the chamber.

 

USAO Grad Provides Scholarship Endowment

The estate of a USAO graduate has provided a large contribution to the university foundation. The Debra Worley estate has donated more than $330,000 to establish an endowed scholarship in the name of Worley and her late husband, Willis. Both Debra and Willis graduated from the university. Willis graduated in 1980 and would return home to grow his family’s funeral home business. Debra graduated in 1982 and managed many rural Southwest Oklahoma clinics. She finished her career at the Clinics of North Texas Cardiology Department. The scholarship will be awarded to students based on their financial need. The preference is that students be in the business administration program and maintain a 2.5 Grade Point Average.

 

Groups to Serve Free Christmas Meal Early

A Chickasha organization will be serving free Christmas meals to the community this week. Life Skills Institute and Resurrection House will also send boxes of food home with families. Zack Bowles is the director of the institute and says dine-in and take-out meals will be available on Thursday, Dec. 23rd. Dine-in times will be from noon to 2 p.m. and again from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The take-out meals will be available all afternoon and food boxes will be available while the supply lasts. Bowles said the food is being provided by donations from the community as well as the Regional Food Bank.

Resignation 'Agreements' Approved 

for Suspended Ninnekah School Administrators

Two administrators suspended from Ninnekah Public Schools who were implicated in the molestation scandal involving basketball players have had resignation agreements approved by the school board. The agreements for suspended superintendent Todd Bunch and high school principal David Pitts were approved last week following a closed door meeting of the board. Both Bunch and Pitts are among several defendants named in a federal lawsuit alleging the cover-up of sexual assaults of girls basketball players. The Chickasha Express-Star reported that the terms of the agreements weren't released. Both men were suspended by the school board earlier this year pending the outcome of an investigation into the allegations brought forth by several former basketball players who say they were assaulted by former coach Ron Akins. Akins is facing rape and sexual battery charges in connection with the allegations.

 

State Leads the Country in Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

Oklahoma leads the country in its number of marijuana dispensaries. With more than 2,100 dispensaries, Oklahoma has almost twice as many dispensaries as next two states combined. Oregon and California together have about 2,500 dispensaries. The study published in The Oklahoman shows there are more than 400,000 total medical marijuana licenses in the state which includes about 385,000 individual licenses. That's up from 365,000 last year and accounts for one in every 13 Oklahomans. The licenses also include nearly 9,500 growers; more than 1,700 processors; more than 100 transportation firms; and nearly 30 laboratories. The study shows that Grady, McClain, Garvin, and Comanche counties each have more than 200 medical marijuana facilities.  The number of care-giver licenses was down from just under 2,600 last year to just under 2,000 this year. Medical marijuana tax revenue in Oklahoma has grown from $24 million in 2019 to more than $61 million so far this year (January through November). State and local sales tax revenues have grown from $30 million in 2019 to nearly $76 million in the first 11 months of this year. Nearly 60 percent of the tax revenue goes to disadvantaged public school districts as well as charter schools; about 35 percent goes to the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority for regulating the industry; and about 5 percent goes to the state health department for drug and alcohol rehabilitation. Any collections over $65 million will go into the state's general fund.

 

Two Hospitalized After Car Hits Tree

Two people were sent to the hospital - one with life-threatening injuries - after a car ran off the road near Dibble and hit a tree over the weekend. An unidentified 17-year old girl was air-lifted to an Oklahoma City hospital and admitted in critical condition. She was a passenger in a car driven by 21-year old Austyn Thomas of Lindsay. Thomas was taken by ground ambulance to a hospital where he was admitted in fair condition. The accident happened about six miles southwest of Dibble in McClain County just before noon Saturday. The highway patrol reports that Thomas was northbound on May Avenue when the accident happened. The trooper investigating the crash said some kind of distraction inside the vehicle was the cause of the crash.

 

HUD Sends $5 Million to Oklahoma Tribes

Several million dollars in COVID-19 relief funds have been awarded to tribal groups in Oklahoma. Each of five tribes will equally share $5 million which comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Officials with the Apache and Kiowa Tribes say they'll use the money for housing upgrades and construction. Officials with the Apache Housing Authority said they will use the money to clean, modify, or replace air ducts in homes. They may also enclose garages to create extra bedrooms, renovate rental units, and even upgrade broadband infrastructure. Officials with the Kiowa Housing Authority said they'll use the funds to build as many as 14 new homes around Carnegie. Other Oklahoma tribes to receive the funds are the Seminole, Seneca-Cayuga, and Modoc Nation.
