Energy company Announces New SCOOP Wells in Grady County.

According to oilandgas360.com, Gulfport Energy announced the results of recent Grady County well Production. Gulfport brought the Serenity on line, and it produced a 24-hour initial peak production rate of 15.7 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, composed of 70 percent natural gas, 19 percent natural gas liquids, and 11 percent oil. When normalized to the company's standard 7,500-foot lateral, the well-produced an initial rate of 19.6 million cubic feet, and is age equivalent to the Meramec...

CMS is raising awareness in our young

Area No Hunger Holiday

Monday, Paw Paw’s Hamburgers in Tuttle and Chickasha will have its 3rd Annual, "No Hunger Holidays Meal" for Christmas Day. Dinner will be served from noon until 6, or until the food is gone. Restaurant Avoids Damage from Cooking Incident

Smoke seen coming out of a downtown Chickasha restaurant caused some tense moments early today. The Chickasha Fire Department was summoned to Temazcal Mexican Restaurant about 7:15 a.m. A passerby called authorities after seeing the smoke coming out of the restaurant at 2nd and Choctaw Ave. No one was at the restaurant when fire crews arrived. Officials said they used a thermal imaging device to determine a hot spot in the kitchen area. Crews found a couple of pots with grease or oil that were left simmering. Restaurant owner Rafael Pacheco said someone typically comes into the restaurant very early to begin simmering food for the day. He said one of the cast-iron pots had a tiny hole which caused oil to leak out, which burned the meat that was cooking. Pacheco said that there was no damage to the kitchen. He said they called plumbers and the gas company to make sure there were no other problems. The restaurant was able to open at its regular time today.

Killer Sentenced to Life Without Parole

A Caddo County man convicted of killing his girlfriend will likely spend the rest of his life in prison. 63-year old Merwin Michael Hill of Eakly was found guilty by an Oklahoma County District Court jury last month. A judge approved the jury's recommendation of life in prison without parole. Hill was convicted of stabbing Joyce Grant three times in the back during an argument at her Oklahoma City home in February of 2016. The website NewsOK.com reports that Grant contacted police more than a dozen times in the weeks leading up to her death, to report suspicious activity and harassing phone calls. Grant is reported to have called 911 and giving Hill's name, concerned that he was stalking her. Hill was also convicted of larceny of a vehicle, for taking Grant's car after killing her.

Flu Numbers Continue Climbing

Another 65 flu cases have been reported by the state health department in the last week. That increases the total number of the flu this season by 30 percent. More than 260 flu cases have been confirmed since the flu season began Sept. 1^st. Six Oklahomans have died from the flu virus. Grady and Comanche counties have each reported four flu cases so far. Caddo and McClain counties each have reported three. Stephens County has had five flu reports, while Garvin County has had no flu cases. The flu season runs through mid-May.

You Drink, You Drive, You Lose

Area law enforcement groups are putting an extra effort into making roadways safe over the next few days. Chickasha police and others have implemented the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, and will be looking for impaired drivers. Developed by the National Transportation Highway Safety Administration, the campaign is designed to make individuals aware of the lives they put at risk while drinking and driving. Officials also encourage those who may be attending holiday parties where alcohol is served to have someone take them home if they feel they've been drinking too much.

Attorneys Intensify Suspended School Employee Issue

Attorneys on both sides of the situation involving several suspended Chickasha school employees are writing more about the alleged wrong-doing. School board attorney Richard O'Carroll writes that problems within the district have been going on a long time. In a report on KOCO Channel Five, the station reports that O'Carroll says they are dealing with people who believe they are entitled to use the school as their personal property, and its been going on for decades. O'Carroll accuses some of the employees of embezzlement and failture to report child abuse, but has not provided any details. Woody Glass is the attorney for the suspended employees. He writes that the district has posted comments publicly that places the workers in a false light, and that the allegations are unsupported by fact. Glass also says the district's statements are an example of its retaliatory motive. The five employees are on paid leave for ten days, while an independent investigation by school officials looks into the allegations.

Newcastle Community Rallies for Family of Injured Teens

A community is praying for a Christmas miracle after the son of a local minister is critically injured when his pick up hit a semi. 16-year old Caleb Freeman suffered severe head injuries in the crash that happened Wednesday night. He and his younger brother were headed to the OU basketball game, and were minutes away from the Lloyd Noble Center when the accident happened. 14-year old Clayton Freeman was also hurt, but is expected to recover. The Freemans are the children of Jeremy and Emily Freeman. Jeremy is the minister of the Newcastle First Baptist Church. The church and community are rallying behind the family, and asking for continued prayers for Caleb. Among those offering their support were OU head basketball coach Lon,Kruger and star freshman Trae Young, both of whom reached out to the Freemans after hearing of the accident.

Trial Set for Man Accused Child Sexual Assault Case

A trial is scheduled early next year for a Caddo County man accused of having sex with a 13-year old girl which began at church camp. 21-year old Ryan William Biggins of Binger is charged with rape and sodomy in connection with the incident that occurred in July of 2015. Court documents show the Caddo County Sheriff's Office and OSBI were part of the initial investigation. It's alleged that the two first had relations at Falls Creek when Biggins was 18. It's also alleged he later sneaked into the girl's home. Biggins has pleaded not guilty to the allegations. The trial is set for March of 2018.

Alex FFA Update

The Alex FFA Chapter had a successful year. President Dustin Tolson has a re-cap.

The group will hold its annual fish fry and trophy auction on Saturday, Feb. 10th at the Alex High School.

School Board Delays Hiring Interim Superintendent

After a nearly 3 1/2 hour closed-door meeting, the Chickasha school board takes no action on hiring a long-term interim superintendent. The board of education met for a special meeting for the second night in a row Tuesday. A special meeting was held Monday evening to interview three finalists, and last night's meeting was scheduled to consider hiring one of them. But after returning to open session, school board president Chris Ludwell said they would take no action and tabled a decision, which may be made at a future meeting. There was another large crowd at Tuesday's gathering. Many continuing to show support for several school employees who have been suspended with pay, while officials investigate allegations of embezzlement and failure to report child abuse. About 100 people were on hand Tuesday night. More than twice that number turned out for Monday's special meeting. Only three school board members attended Tuesday's session. Ludwell, Doug Brown, and Julie Badgett-Sinn. Julie Hibbard was a no-show for the second straight meeting, and newly-appointed school board member, Ginny Howell, did not attend. Howell has not yet been sworn in, after being appointed to the panel during Monday's tumultuous special meeting.

Lawton Police Issue Silver Alert

A Silver Alert has been issued for a Lawton man who has been reported missing. The Lawton Police Department has issued the alert for 61-year old Donald Burque. He was reported missing about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. Authorities say he suffers from dementia and high blood pressure. The only description we have of Burque is that he is Caucasian, and may be wearing a red shirt, a blue sweater, blue pants, white shoes, and a camouflage jacket. He may also be wearing glasses. If you come in contact with Donald Burque, call local authorities or the Lawton Police Department.

Update on Silver Alert

Lawton police cancel a Silver Alert for Donald Burque, mid-morning Wednesday. Authorities say Burque was found safe in Lawton but provided no details.

Teens Hospitalized After Crash with Semi

Yesterday's rain may have played a factor in a traffic accident where a couple of teenagers were hurt when their pickup crashes in a semi. The unidentified boys from Newcastle were taken to an Oklahoma City hospital, where the 16-year old driver was last in critical condition. The 14-year old passenger was last in fair condition. The driver of the semi, 31-year old Alexander Stout of Tennessee, was not hurt. The accident happened at I-35 and Highway 9 near Riverwind Casino about 5:30 p.m.Tuesday. The highway patrol reports that the pickup was trying to merge onto northbould I-35 when the driver lost lost control on the wet on-ramp and hit the semi.

Earthquakes Shake State

A few Grady County residents were startled by an earthquake Tuesday morning. A tremor measuring about 2.8 on the Richter Scale hit just after 8:30 a..m. The U.S. Geoligical Survey reports the quake was located between Ninnekah and Alex. On social media, some reported hearing a "boom" at the time of the quake and thought their home was hit by a truck. Others said they felt some shaking. It was one of four earthquakes to rattle the Sooner State Tuesday. The largest was in Woodward County about 5:30 a.m. which registered 4.0 on the Richter scale.

New Events Set for Grady County Fairgrounds

The new executive director for the Grady County Fairgrounds and Events Center has already scored a couple of new events. Andy Maher says one of them is a first-ever event set for the end of March.

The other is the Oklahoma High School Rodeo Association state finals, set for the week of May 29th. The finals are moving to Chickasha from Woodward. The association will also have a regular-season event in Chickasha the weekend of March 23rd.

Fair Board Seats Up for Election

The seats of three members of the Grady County Fair Board come up for election next month. The posts are held by Beth Norvell in District 1; Steve Standridge in District 2; and Eddie Rathun in District 3. The filing period will be the week of Jan. 8th through 12th, with candidates to file at the Grady County Election Board. The election will be held Jan. 31st at the county barns in each district. Winners will serve three-year terms.

Supporters Rally for Suspended School Employees

A huge crowd in attendance at last night's special meeting of the Chickasha school board. At least 300 people were on hand to rally in support of four school employees suspended last week. Many of the supporters carried signs saying I Support the Four, Make CPS Great Again, and #BBT4. The crowd forced the school board to move the meeting from its regular location at the school administration building to the high school auditorium. While the meeting was to appoint a new member to the school board, the crowd was there to rally behind four suspended employees. There were also reports that a fifth unidentified employee has also been suspended. While the school board spent two-hours in a closed-door session to discuss the appointment, many in the crowd spoke in favor of Pam Huggins, Yohance Brown, Pete Bush and Stacy Crutchfield. Family members of the suspended workers thanked the crowd for supporting them, including Jayce Brown, daughter athletic director Yohance Brown.

The attorney for the school board said constituents have brought complaints to the panel against the suspended employees. Those complaints include embezzlement and failure to report child abuse. It’s not known which employees are facing which allegations. When the school board returned after the initial private meeting, the panel voted 3-0 to appoint former educator Ginny Howell to serve a one-year term. Member Julie Hibbard was absent. Many in the crowd wanted the board to schedule an election for the post, instead of making an appointment. The school board held a second closed-door meeting to interview candidates who applied for the district's long-term interim superintendent post.  Board president Chris Ludwell says the group interviewed three finalists out of eight candidates who applied. The school board took no action. Another special meeting of the school board is scheduled late this afternoon to consider hiring the interim administrator.

Burn Ban Starts in Stephens County

Stephens County is the first county in the region to implement a burn ban. The county is part of an area that is in a moderate drought designation according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. The ban includes trash, brush, pasture burning, campfires, and bon fires. The burn ban is for 30 days although commissioners can remove it any time.

Duncan Fairgounds Manager Fired

Also out of Stephens County, commissioners fire the director of the Stephens County Fair and Expo Center. Mike Anderson was fired following an audit that determined he was receiving full-time pay while working less than his full-time status. It's alleged Anderson was overpaid by more than $15,000 and that there was a widespread lack of internal controls on payroll, purchases, and payments. The review from the state auditor was for the period between July of 2014 and March of 2017.  Anderson had been on administrative leave for about a month.

Grass Fires Threaten Chickasha Homes

Chickasha residents joined firefighters in beating back flames from a number of wildfires that erupted this past weekend. As many as four wildfires burned along the H.E. Bailey Turnpike in the southwest part of Chickasha late Saturday night, sending residents scrambling to prevent the flames from causing damage. Local photographer Jim Tibbetts' home was among those threatened. After dowsing the flames with the help of neighbors and fire crews, he turned to his Facebook page to thank all those who helped. Tibbets says the fire got within two feet of a storage shed and within 20 feet of his home, but avoided any property damage.

Motel Shooting Suspects in Custody

Now an update on that shooting that took place a couple of weeks ago at a Chickasha motel. Reports are that Chickasha police have arrested two men in connection with the shooting. The Chickasha Express-Star reports that 29-year old Eric Chance Fuller of Chickasha and 38-year old Jeremy Lynn Willis of Alex were taken into custody last week. The men are accused of shooting Austin Brooks, who suffered a gunshot wound in the neck at America's Best Value Inn the morning of Dec. 7th. The website On Demand Court Records indicates that Fuller is charged with drug trafficking and having a firearm after conviction. He remains in jail pending a $200,000 bond. Willis was the alleged trigger man, charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon, and having a firearm after conviction. He remains in jail in lieu of $250,000 bond.

New School Board Member May be Appointed

Officials have apparently found an individual to fill a vacant spot on the Chickasha school board, after a member resigned last week. The panel will have a special meeting tonight to appoint a resident to Office No. 1. Amos Franco resigned from the post last week, saying he needed to take care of some family issues. The school board will have a closed-door meeting to discuss candidates and is expected to announce an appointment afterward. The agenda for the meeting doesn't name the candidate nor candidates who may be considered. The special meeting will begin at 5:30 this afternoon at the school administration building.

No Interviews for Interim Super Expected

The school board will NOT be holding interviews for the long-term interim superintendent position for Chickasha Public Schools. A post on a social media page last week from a group calling itself Friends of Chickasha Schools anticipated the school board would hold interviews for the interim administrator tonight, but the measure is not part of the agenda for tonight's meeting.

Family, Friends Mourn Death of Rev. Larry Hatfield

Some sad news to pass along this morning. Our dear friend Rev. Larry Hatfield passed away over the weekend. Rev. Hatfield has been part of our KOOL 105.5 morning show with his Coffee with Hatfield program for several years. His stories brought hope, humility, and often a little humor into our lives. He had retired as an Assembly of God preacher in recent years, but continued recording his daily radio programs. He would generally stop in to the radio stations around the time he would visit patients at the hospital and nursing homes. We will continue running some of Rev. Hatfield's programs over the next several days. We have an archive of numerous Coffee with Hatfield programs on our website, which date back a couple of years. Should you find the need to hear his inspirational and thought-provoking comments, you can find them under the Community Tab. His funeral is pending, and we'll bring you the information as soon as we're notified. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Helen, their children and families. Special Session II to Begin

State lawmakers are heading back to Oklahoma City this morning for another special session. Gov. Mary Fallin called a second special session, to try to fill the remaining gap in the state budget that wasn't filled during an eight-week special session earlier this fall.

Kiowa Tribe Schedules Toy Giveaway

A toy distribution for members of the Kiowa Tribe is set for this week. Hundreds of toys were collected at the Kiowa Tribe's Casinos in Verden and Devol. Toys will be given away on Wednesday, December 20th from noon to 2:30 p.m. at the new Kiowa Tribe Anadarko service office and at the Red Buffalo Hall in Carnegie. Toys are available on a first-come first serve basis. Children must be present with their parents.

Allegations Announced Against Suspended School Employees

Some of those suspended Chickasha school employees are accused of embezzlement and failing to report child abuse. The allegations are included in a written statement from an attorney for the Chickasha Board of Education. On Friday, a one-sentence statement was released by school board attorney Richard O'Carroll. The statement did not indicate which of the four suspended employees were accused of the specific actions. Administrators Yohance Brown, Pete Bush, and Pam Huggins, and administrative assistant Stacy Crutchfield were all suspended with pay this week. O'Carroll says an independent investigation of the allegations will be held over the next several days by a school administrator. In the mean time, the suspended employees are not allowed on school grounds.

Former School Board Member Explains Resignation

A former school board member says personal reasons led to his decision to resign from the panel. Amos Franco suddenly stepped down from his post this week. In a letter Franco personally delivered to the 106.1 The Ranch studio on Friday, Franco wrote that he had some family issues to deal with. The school board is acting quicky to fill Franco's post. A special meeting is scheduled for Monday night to appoint his replacement. the name of the individual has not been announced.

Grants to Benefit Cities, Counties

Several communities will be able to install or repair storm sirens thanks to grants from a regional agency. The Association of South Central Oklahoma Governments awarded several thousand dollars in what are known as REAP Grants. REAP stands for Rural Economic Action Plan. Grady County District 1 and the City of Tuttle will receive about $40,000 for storm siren projects. Cyril will use $45,000 to continue work on improving its sewer system.

They "Still Do" After Seven Decades

The date was December 15th, 1947. A soldier and grocery store clerk married, and as the late Paul Harvey used to say were on their way to forever, together. Fast-forward 70 years and Delbert and Juanita Jump of Cyril said "I Still Do". The couple renewed their vows at the Lawton-Ft. Sill Veterans Center. Delbert was 22 and serving in the Navy during World War Two. Juanita was beginning a long career at what was then Anderson Grocery. Juanita worked there for 40 years, while Delbert would work at the oil refinery, then as a Highway Patrol trooper. in retirement he drove a school bus for Cyril Public Schools.

School Employees Suspended; No Reason Given

Four Chickasha school employees were escorted off school property during school hours this week, suspended for unknown reasons. Three administrators including special services director Pam Huggins, athletic director Yohance Brown, and transportation and maintenance director Pete Bush were suspended. Stacey Crutchfield, an administrative assistant at the bus barn was also suspended. The suspensions are for 10 days with pay. Richard O'Carroll, an attorney for the Chickasha school board, said an independent investigation will be held to determine if there has been any wrong-doing. KOOL News spoke with O'Carroll.

A letter sent by interim superintendent Cindy Schmidt to the suspended employees alleges that some of the school district's concerns may relate to a violation of criminal statutes, but gave no indication of what they might be. Woody Glass is an attorney representing the suspended employees. In a letter he sent to Schmidt, he writes the she failed to provide information to support the suspensions, and that while the allegations are serious, they should be substantiated by credible and believable evidence. He also questions how any investigation could be independent, with Schmidt or anyone acting on her behalf leading the probe. Glass also alleges the suspensions were in retaliation for the employees being vocal in their protests and concerns about the district’s Personalized Learning Curriculum.

Firefighters Walk to Support New Cadets

An interesting sight yesterday, where a number of firefighters were seen walking along U.S. Highway 81 north of Chickasha in full bunker gear, carrying a large American flag and being escorted by a fire truck and ambulance. The walk signified the end of a five-week training session for new cadets. Chris Dennis with the Chickasha Fire Department said the trainees were taken out to the Chickasha airport where they were told there was a fire. However, there was not a fire. The recruits and co-workers donned their bunker gear and oxygen tanks, and walked back to Fire Station No. 1. Among those taking part in the more than three-mile walk was Dustin Myers, who had been on the walk before.

While there were four cadets in the program, other fire fighters joined the walk in a show of solidarity. It took about an hour for the crew to walk with their 70 pounds of bunker gear and added equipment. The new cadets will be recognized in a formal ceremony this afternoon.

Cement FFA'ers Active

The Cement FFA put together a great community project this year. Rhylan Coker is the sentintel for the chapter.

The chapter also received  $3,000 in a National FFA Living to Serve Grant. The group is using those funds to plant an orchard to include peach, apple, pear, and apricot trees.

Chickasha School Board Member Resigns

A Chickasha school board member has stepped down. Amos Franco announced his resignation at the end of Tuesday's board of education meeting. Franco submitted a one-sentence letter announcing his decision, in which he says the resignation was effective immediately. Franco had served the post for about six years. He ran unopposed for the office in 2016. The term was to run through the spring of 2021. Franco served in Office No. 1 which includes most of the south-central parts of Chckasha. That's generally from 12th Street west to 29th Street, and from Georgia Avenue south to Pikes Peak Road. It's not clear if the school board will need to schedule a special election. A former school board member we talked to said the board could appoint someone to the fill the vacancy on a temporary basis. We reached out to the state election board, but have not heard back from them.

Interim Chickasha Superintendent May be Hired Soon

That new long-term interim superintendent for Chickasha schools could be hired as early as next week. According to a Facebook post from a group calling itself Friends of Chickasha schools, the board of education may have special meeting Monday, December 18th to interview candidates for the post, with those interviews done behind closed doors. Then, another special meeting may be scheduled Tuesday, December 19th to announce the new administrator.

PSO Schedules Tree Pruning Program

Chickasha residents will be seeing contractors pruning trees around PSO powerlines in the coming weeks. Last month, the utility made contact with residents regarding its safety campaign. PSO customers also are receiving notices in their monthly statements that indicate the work will begin in mid to late January. The letter states that the work should improve electric service reliability by removing trees and limbs that may cause power outages. PSO says the work is part of it's regulatory obligation to maintain a four-year vegetation maintenance cycle. PSO is working with guidelines developed by national organizations to protect the health of the trees that are to be pruned. Property owners may hire a private tree maintenance contractor to perform the work, but the property owner will be reponsible for paying that firm, and those firms need to be certified to perform work near energized power lines. "It's Time to Fly"

2018 will have an aeronautical theme for the Chickasha business community. It's Time to Fly will be the phrase used most often by leaders of the Chickasha Chamber of Commerce. The group is preparing for its 95th annual banquet that will be held in February. It's the largest fund-raiser of the year for the chamber. The chamber board is looking for members to sponsor the event, and to provide items for a silent auction. Ed Stanton is the 2018 chairman-elect for the chamber board, who will take over for current board chairman Jeff McClure. The chamber also still looking for nominations for several top awards that will be issued, including two Hall of Famers, Volunteer of the Year, and Citizen of the Year. Nominations are due by Jan. 12th, and candidates do not have to be affiliated with the chamber.

Grady County Man Dies Making U-Turn on Turnpike

A man trying to make a U-turn on the H.E. Bailey Turnpike dies when his vehicle is hit by a semi hauling cattle. 28-year old Sean McCoy of Ninnekah died in the crash early Wednesday. The driver of the semi, 36-year old Stephen Long of New Mexico, was not injured. The accident happened about 4:30 Wednesday morning near Mile Marker 104 which is just south of the Newcastle city limits. The Highway Patrol reports that both vehicles were westbound on the interstate, when McCoy attempted the U-turn, and was hit by the big rig.

CPS Unions Still Concerned about Superintendent's Post

Leaders of the two unions which represent Chickasha school teachers and support staff are again questioning why the school board wants to hire a long-term interim superintendent. Representatives of the Chickasha United Teachers Association and the Chickasha Association of Support Employees issued a joint statement on the matter during last night's school board meeting. The groups are asking why the board wants to hire a long-term interim administrator during a time of budget insufficiencies. The statement said when former Superintendent Jim Glaze took extended leave when was battling leukemia, that school employees picked up the slack without having to hire an interim. The statement also said the individual who would be hired should be required to notify school employees before major decisions are made, such as starting a Personalized Learning Curriculum. The individual should be a staunch supporter of public schools, with a critical awareness of under-mining forces. The person should hold a balanced and reasonable position on the role of technology and on-line curriculum, in regard to site-based leadership and age-appropriateness. The unions also asked to be part of the process when it comes to interviewing candidates.

Man on Probation Drives in to Cemetery Fence

A man on probation for burglary and carrying contraband into jail is back behind bars after crashing his car into a fence at a cemetery. Chickasha police were dispatched to Rosehill Cemetery last week to investigate the crash at 9th and Alabama. A probable cause affidavit alleges the driver admitted drinking five or six beers and that he didn't see the stop sign. The report indicates officers found a loaded handgun in the man's waistband. The suspect was arrested on numerous complaints including DUI, though he refused to take a breathalyzer exam. Prosecutors have formally charged 22-year old Leobardo Maldonado with felony possession of a weapon after conviction, and misdemeanors for DUI and not having a driver's license. Prosecutors also want to accelerate punishment on Maldonado's previous guilty pleas. It wasn't known how much damage was done to the cemetery's fence.

Banker Retiring

A long-time Chickasha banker is calling it a career. David Herndon is retiring next week after a nearly half century of work with First National Bank and Trust. Herndon has been with the bank for 45 years starting his career in 1972, shortly after he graduated from college. His first job at the bank was sorting checks. For the last several years he's served as vice president of lending at the downtown Chickasha bank His 45 years is about one-third of the 125 years the bank has been open.

Restaurants Offer Free Christmas Day Meal

A couple of local restaurants will serve free dinners on Christmas Day. The Paw-Paw's restaurants in Chickasha and Tuttle will open their doors to everyone for what they call No Hunger Holidays. Owner Dustin Payne says families can attend for any reason. This is the third year for the event and Payne is hoping to feed about 1,500 people. Payne says he's getting a lot of response from individuals and businesses who are donating food or volunteer their time, and that more of each are needed. Contact managers at either Paw-Paws restaurants to help with No Hunger Holidays. Both locations will be open Christmas Day from noon to 6 p.m. or until the food is gone.

Interim-Superintendent Again Part of School Board Talks

The Chickasha Board of Education is still in search of a long-term interim superintendent. The post is up for discussion tonight during the regular monthly meeting of the school board. The panel met behind closed doors for about 2 ½ hours during a special meeting just last week to go through a number of applications and resumes. The school board will again go behind closed doors tonight to discuss the matter. During the open portion of tonight's meeting, leaders of the two unions which represent school employees, the Chickasha United Teachers Association and the Chickasha Association of Support Employees, are on the agenda to present the qualifications and characteristics of what they would like to see in a candidate for the post. The school board meets at 6:30 p.m. at the administration building at 9th and Choctaw.

Caddo County Accident Victim Dies

A man critically injured in a Caddo County crash last month has died. 27-year old Alexander Belsome of  Winnsboro, La. passed away in an Oklahoma City hospital this past weekend. The highway patrol reports he suffered internal injuries in the crash. Belsome was driving a car that was speeding down a county road east of Lookeba on Nov. 29th, when the car ran off the road and hit a tree.

Trucker Critical After Tollgate Crash

Now, an update on that commercial vehicle crash at the toll booth southwest of Chickasha  on the H.E. Bailey Turnpike over the weekend. A Yukon truck driver was last in critical condition after the Sunday morning accident. 49-year old Howard Skinner, II was air-lifted to an Oklahoma City hospital with numerous injuries. The highway patrol reports Skinner failed to slow down, hit the attenuator, a concrete wall, and part of the toll gate building. No toll booth employees were hurt. It wasn't known how much damage was done to the building. However, that gate will be closing over the next few weeks, as a new one will be opening near mile marker 68 next month.

Police Continue Motel Shooting Probe

There still have been no arrests made in connection with last week's shooting at a Chickasha motel. Authorities had detained three persons of interest for questioning. The shooting victim, Austin Brooks, has been released from the hospital after being shot in the face. Police say he could not identify the person that shot him.

Burglary Suspect Faces Formal Charge

Here’s another update on a story regarding a suspect arrested in connection with a Chickasha burglary. A home video surveillance system caught the suspect in the act. Chickasha police were called to a home in the 200 block of South 6th Street last Wednesday evening. Court documents indicate the video showed a man taking a chain saw and large gas can out of the victim’s pick-up. The officer is said to have recognized the suspect. An arrest warrant was issued for 18-year old Dalton Cordell Null of Blanchard, who was arrested by a sheriff's deputy over the weekend. Null was charged with felony burglary in Grady County District Court on Monday. He is out of jail after posting a $10,000 bond. He's to announce his attorney Dec. 21st, and a preliminary hearing conference is on the calendar for Jan. 3rd.

Special-Use Permits Back up for Discussion

Changes to the City of Chickasha's special-use permit regulations will be re-visited by the city's Planning Commission today. Earlier this year, the city council turned down some planning commission recommendations that officials felt would be more resident-friendly. A public hearing on the revision will be held by the planning board at 4 o’clock this afternoon at City Hall.

Nursing Home Receives State Honors

A Chickasha nursing home is among several state facilities recognized for their quality of care. Shannon Springs Nursing Home is one of about a dozen nursing homes honored by the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living. The Quality Initiative Recognition Program honors facilities for meeting goals like reduction of hospitalization rates, staff retention, and increased customer and resident satisfaction.

Holiday Decorations May Harm Pets

Festive decorations adorn most homes this time of year. However, a curious family pet could create havoc. Susan Routh with Grady County OSU Extension has a recommendation that may help minimize any damage.

She also suggests trying to keep lights out of the reach of pets, as they could be seriously injured or even die from chewing on them. Also, mistletoe and holly can cause pets to get sick if they eat them.

Monday, December 11th

Children, Adults Hurt in Crash

A four-year old boy is hospitalized and several other children and two adults were injured in a traffic accident in Grady County last night. The unidentified four-year old was last in good condition at an Oklahoma City hospital, suffering from what officials called trunk internal injuries. Two five-year old children riding in the same vehicle were treated and released, and a teenager in the other vehicle was also allowed to go home. The accident happened about 6 o'clock last night, about three miles west of Minco. The OHP reports that a pick-up driven by 43-year old Ryan Schneider of Minco was hauling some hay, and had slowed to turn in to a private drive. The trooper said the pick-up’s brake lights and turn signal were defective, and the third brake light was obstructed by the hay. An SUV driven by 66-year old Gale Miller, also of Minco, rear-ended the pickup. Miller and Schneider were both taken to Oklahoma City area hospitals, where they were treated and released with minor injuries. The roadway was closed for over an hour.

Commercial Vehicle Slams into Turnpike Toll Booth

A commercial vehicle hits the toll booth on the H.E. Bailey Turnpike southwest of Chickasha early Sunday. The OHP reports there were injuries but no details of the accident were provided. It wasn't known if any of the toll booth employees were hurt. The accident happened about 2:45 Sunday morning. The commercial vehicle was westbound on the interstate when it struck the toll booth and debris was thrown into both the westbound and eastbound lanes. Parts of the turnpike were shut down for more than three hours.

Burglary Suspect in Custody

A Blanchard area man is arrested on a warrant for burglary. 18-year old Dalton Cordell Null was taken into custody by a Grady County Sheriff's deputy mid-morning Sunday. The website On Demand Court Records indicate that Null is charged with second degree burglary, in connection with an investigation by Chickasha police. The warrant was issued late last week. No information was immediately available from Chickasha authorites regarding the accusations against Null.

Commissoners to Discuss Beer Sales at Fairgrounds

Grady County Commissioners may take formal action that would allow beer to be served at the Grady County Fairgrounds. The measure to be considered when the commissioners meet this morning. The panel will review the proposal to sell 3.2 beer during special events.

Real Estate Commission Handles Complaints

Individuals who may have issues when selling residential or commercial real estate can report those issues to the Oklahoma Real Estate Commission. Sherry Keifler is an investigator with the commission, and says they will look into other aspects of a firm should they be called in.

The investigator can recommend whether an associate should be placed on probation or have their license suspended, should the commission determine that a law was broken. If so, the information would be passed on to the district attorney. Keifler says for many complaints there is a mis-communication between parties that can be handled without any commission action.

Robotics Teams Compete at State Level

Robotics teams for Chickasha's Middle and Lincoln schools were among those competing at a state level competition in Shawnee over the weekend. The middle school team played 21st out of 50 teams, and the Lincoln school team was 36th. Instructor Brandon Willis said their scores were not high enough to advance to the world championship. Some of the students will continue working with robotics, though. The worldwide high school First Robotics Competition season will begin next month, and several middle school students will be joining the high school team for the project.

Shooting Suspect Still at-Large

While a man shot in the face continues recovering from his injuries, police are still looking for the shooter. 24-year old Austin Brooks of Chickasha was last in good condition at an OKC hospital after the shooting at a local motel Thursday morning. Police had detained three persons of interest who were witnesses to the shooting. Brooks told police he couldn't identify the shooter.

DA Files Charges after Drug Bust

Two people arrested for having thousands of dollars in illegal drugs in their car are formally charged with drug trafficking. 54-year old James Dale Scott of Ninnekah is being held on $200,000 bond and 25-year old Brittany Dawn Alexander of Chickasha is being held on a $25,000 bond. Police made a traffic stop on their vehicle and allegedly found a large amount of meth and marijuana and about $8,000 in cash. Scott has a history of run-ins with the law, which include pleading guilty to having a firearm after felony conviction, as well as drug possession. He also was convicted of operating a chop shop.

Longtime Auctioneer Dies

For nearly 50 years, his voice rang out at auctions and livestock shows throughout the region.  Larry Howard has died. He was 63 when he passed away Thursday. He was associated with Charlie Brown Auction since he was 16 years old, and had continued working there until he died. He volunteered his voice to many groups. He and Charlie Brown were the long-time auctioneers for the premium sale for the spring Grady County junior livestock shows. His honors include Grady County Volunteer of the Year and Ninnekah Citizen of the Year. He also served on the Ninnekah school board and was an honorary school board member. Survivors include his wife Carolyn, son Codey and extended family. Funeral for Larry Howard will be at 2 o'clock Tuesday, Dec. 12th at the Ninnekah First Baptist Church. Arrangements are with Sevier Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.

 Higher Ed Task Force Approves Merger Plan              

USAO is included in a proposal that could move a number of colleges and universities under the authority of one of several larger governing boards.  Right now, USAO is guided by its own Board of Regents. A higher education task force has recommended the changes, saying it could help students make an easier transition to four-year schools. the Associated Press cites a report from The Oklahoman saying the plan has its critics. Some say the change would increase tuition at two-year colleges and wouldn't be beneficial to students. Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby said local governance is important with the colleges. He says they have different student bodies to deal with, and that it would be counter-productive. The recommendation will be reviewed by the state regents for higher eduction early next year. If approved, the governing boards of the school would have until June of 2019 to merge with either the OU Board of Regents; the OSU and A and M Colleges Board of Regents; or the Regional University System of Oklahoma Board of Regents.

Senior Citizens to Benefit from Grant

A program designed to keep older Oklahomans in their homes has been awarded a nearly $70,000 grant to help with its work. The Masonic Fraternity of Oklahoma awarded the funds to the Association of South Central Oklahoma Governments. ASCOG serves eight counties, including the area from Blanchard to Chickasha and Anadarko, and south to the Marlow, Duncan, and Lawton areas. ASCOG officials say the funding is not intended to provide continuous support for individuals but would be a one-time payout, where other aid sources may not be available to senior citizens who need help. Applications will be available on the ASCOG website at www.ascog.org beginning Jan. 3rd and should also be available at senior nutrition centers.

Persons of Interest Questioned About Shooting

Three persons of interest are detained in connection with yesterday's shooting at a Chickasha motel. Chickasha police Lt. Scott Weaver says a man was shot in the face, and remains hospitalized with his injury. Police were called to America's Best Value Inn just before 10 o'clock yesterday morning. Weaver said there were several people in a room, when one of them drew a weapon and shot the victim in the left cheek. The victim has been identified as 24-year old Austin Brooks of Chickasha. Brooks told police he couldn't identify the shooter. Weaver says investigators have not determined a motive. Authorities are not releasing the names of the persons of interest.

Drugs, Cash Seized in Traffic Stop               

Chickasha police seize thousands of dollars in pot and methamphetamine along with more than $8,000 in cash following a traffic stop. Authorities found the drugs inside the vehicle, with the help of a K9 officer. 54 year old James Dale Scott of Ninnekah and 25-year old Brittany Dawn Alexander of Chickasha were arrested on drug trafficking and other complaints. Both could be formally charged today.

Killer Gets Life

A Caddo County man convicted of murder receives a life sentence and additional 15 years for his role in a Lawton homicide. Joshua Codynah of Apache was convicted for his role in the death of Michael Mithlo, which occurred in Lawton last year. During testimony in the sentencing, Mithlo's father said words could not describe the void and emptiness he's felt since his son died. Codynah also took the stand and apologized to Mithlo's family. Codynah won’t be eligible for parole until 2068.

Firefighters will Train In Chickasha

More than 50 volunteer firefighters across the state will be in Chickasha this weekend for an intense training program. The Oklahoma Forestry Service offers a Red Card Certification program. Once completed, firefighters would be qualified to assist in battling major wildland fires, like what's happening in California. Buddy Myers with the Grady County Fire Department says the training includes a physical agility test.

The training is offered in conjunction with the Volunteer Firefighters Association of Oklahoma.

Hotel Groundbreaking

A ground breaking ceremony was held Thursday afternoon for Chickasha's next hotel. A Best Western Plus will be built near the Grady County Fairgrounds next year. It's an $8 million development for Hirem and Pinakin Patel, who have similar facilities in Duncan, Lawton, and Wichita Falls. Hirem was on hand for the ground breaking.

He says they hope to employ about 18 staff once they open.

New Construction Slows

New construction projects typically slow down in late fall, and that was the case in Chickasha for November. The city's Community Development Department issued just over $500,000 in new construction permits last month. Only eight permits were awarded, and all were for residential projects. Among them were three new single-family homes, each valued near $150,000. Two of them are in the southeast part of town around Trinity Baptist Church in the Alli Circle area. Home Creations was given approval to build another home in the Sleepy Hollow Two addition. Other building permits were issued to Aaron and Angie Miller for $19,000 for a new carport near 20th and Minnesota; Tom Phillips received a $15,000 remodeling permit at 36 Village Drive; and David and Kim Payne received a $10,000 remodeling permit at 34 Ridgecrest Drive. For the first 11 months of 2017, more than $49 million in new construction have been approved.

Update on School Board Filings

Only two Grady County school districts will have school board elections in February. Chickasha and Rush Springs schools were the only ones to have multiple candidates file, after a three-day filing period that ended Wednesday. In Chickasha, incumbent Julie Badgett-Sinn is being challenged by Zack McGill. In Rush Springs, Tommy Jordan and Del Ford filed. Candidates who filed unopposed and will take office in the spring are Rusty Garrett at Ninnekah; Keegan Doke at Amber-Pocasset; Norman Wood at Verden; Tommy Ketchum at Alex; Lisa Schneberger and Brad Bute at Minco (separate offices); Gary Laird at Tuttle; and Charlie Dunbar at Bridge Creek. For the K-8 schools, Seth DeHart at Pioneer, Scott Taylor at Friend and Kendall Carr at Middleberg.

In Caddo County school districts, three candidates have filed for the Anadarko school board post. They are Justin Myers, Brett Stephens, and Ronald McLemore. Two candidates filed at Carnegie, Ryan Clark and Michael Longhat;  a pair of candidates also filed at Apache, Troy Lewis and Katrina Wetselline. Filing unopposed were Shelly Mink at Cement; Delbert McCurley at Cyril;  Alese Savage at Gracemont; Cassi Crowell at Ft. Cobb-Broxton; Casy Horn at Lookeba-Sickles and Dustin Tacket for the Caddo-Kiowa Technology Center school board.

In McClain County, Tim Sluder and Gabe Green filed at Blanchard; and Steve Long and Gene Shiflett filed at Dibble. Doyle Greteman of Lindsay filed un-opposed for the Mid America Technology Center school board.

House Candidate Visits Chickasha           

One of the candidates running for House District 51 met with business leaders in the area yesterday. Marlow Mayor Brad Boles stopped by the Chickasha Chamber of Commerce to talk about why he's interested in state government. Boles says he'd like to scrutinize state agencies to make sure they are spending money wisely. Boles will face Chickasha businessman Dustin Payne in the Republican primary election Jan. 9th. The winner will go on to face Democrat Chuck Mudock in March.

Chickasha Christmas on Tap

Hundreds of people expected to gather in downtown Chickasha tonight for the lighted Christmas parade. The Main Street Assocation will be doling out some awards for the top entries among floats, bands, business groups, riding clubs, and churches. A few main street merchants will be open before the parade for holiday shoppers. The parade route will run from the YMCA to the railroad depot.

Council Rep Says Civil Rights Icon Deserves Recognition

A Chickasha woman's impact on desegregating higher education at the national level needs to be recognized more by the community. Chickasha City Councilman R.P. Ashanti-Alexander wants the city to do more to highlight the efforts of Ada Lois Sipuel-Fisher, who broke the color barrier at the OU Law School back in the 1940s. Here is Ashanti-Alexander discussing the issue at this week's city council meeting.

Sipuel-Fisher's case went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, in which she was eventually allowed to be the first black woman to attend the OU Law School. While the city has a street named after Sipuel-Fisher, Ashanti-Alexander believes there should be something else to promote her accomplishments.

Grady County School Board Races Develop

A race has developed for a seat on the Chickasha Board of Education. Zach McGill will challenge incumbent Julie Badgett-Sinn for Office No. 3 on the school board. McGill filed his application to run yesterday. There is also a race for Rush Springs Board of Education, where Del Ford and Tommy Jordan have filed. A few candidates in other county school districts have filed un-challenged, though candidates can still come forward today, the final day of the three-day filing period. New filings from yesterday include Keegan Doke at Amber-Pocasset; Norman Wood at Verden; Brad Bute and Lisa Schneberger for separate offices in Minco; Scott Taylor at Friend and Kendal Camp at Middleberg. Earlier candidates who have filed include Seth DeHart at Pioneer; Tommy Ketchum at Alex; and Gary Laird at Tuttle.

Caddo County School Board Filings

In Caddo County, there are still no filings for Anadarko School Board.  New filings from Tuesday show Katrina Wetselline signed up in Apache; and Casey Horn at Lookeba-Sickles. Also, Tom Horn filed to challenge Carol Garrison at Hinton.

McClain County School Board Filings

In McClain County, there's a race for Dibble School Board, as Steve Long and Gene Shiflett both filed yesterday. At Blanchard, Tim Sluder and Gabe Green have filed. Also, Doyle Greteman of Lindsay has filed for a seat on the Mid-America Technology Center school board.

Chix School Board to Review Interim-Superintendent Candidates

Another special meeting of the Chickasha school board will be held to find a long-term interim superintendent. The panel will meet Thursday evening in a closed-door session to review resumes of those who have applied. In open session, the panel will discuss and possibly take action to determine how to proceed with the search process. Currently, Cindy Schmidt is serving as temporary interim superintendent. She's serving in that role since her predecessor, Dave Cash, was allowed to take a controversial leave of absence, but still serve as superintendent emeritus, while he works with another company. Cash has an agreement with the school board to return as full-time superintendent July 1, 2018.

Nominations Sought for Chamber Honors

The Chickasha Chamber of Commerce is looking for nominations for a number of awards that will be presented during its annual banquet in early 2018. Officials will honor a Citizen of the Year; a Volunteer of the Year, and Hall of Fame-Living Icon and Legacy award recipients. Chamber president Mark Rathe said candidates do not have to be chamber members to be nominated. Deadline for nominations is January 12th, with awards being presented Feb. 23rd.

OHCE Recognizes Top Members

The Oklahoma Home and Community Education groups of Grady County issued some awards during their annual meeting on Monday. Jyme Tyner of Rural Neighbors received the Heart of OHCE award. Peggy Eiss of Spring Creek was named Rookie of the Year. Anna Edens of Rural Neighbors was recognized for her life story submission on Germany during World War Two; and Patty Ennen of Friend won first place in photography. OHCE has been around for more than a century in Grady County. Rural Neighbors celebrated its 104th anniversary and Lucile Bluebonnet marked its 102nd year. Collectively, the OHCE groups distributed more than $7,500 in scholarships in 2017.

Deadline Approaches for Wheat Producers

Wheat producers have about a month before they need to meet a deadline. Mark Jackson with the Grady County Farm Service Agency.

Many FSA county committes in the region will meet tomorrow to count ballots in the recently completed county committee elections.

Police Officers to Continue Working Long Shifts

Chickasha police officers will continue working 12-hour shifts, in a new agreement between the city and Fraternal Order of Police No. 129. After a 15-minute closed-door meeting, the Chickasha City Council unanimously approved a collective bargaining agreement for the current fiscal year. The agreement calls for officers to continue working the longer shifts, due to a shortage of officers. It also calls for the city to pay for cell phones for some officers for business purposes. The agreement runs through June 30, 2018.

Police Department Receives Body Cam Grant

The police department was recently awarded a large grant to pay for body cameras for new officers. The $5,000 grant comes from OMAG, which is the city's insurance carrier. Kevin McCullough with the agency was on hand or a formal presentation at last night's council meeting.

Interim Police Chief G.G. Music said the grant will be used to purchase five body cameras for five new police officers that have recently been hired.

School Board Candidates File

A handful of candidates have filed for school board posts in the region. As of late yesterday, no races had developed in Grady County school districts. Julie Badgett-Sinn filed for her post on the Chickasha school board; Seth DeHart filed at Pioneer; Tommy Ketchum filed for re-election at Alex; Tommy Jordan at Rush Springs; and Gary Laird files at Tuttle. In Caddo County, no candidates had filed at Anadarko; at Cyril, Delbert McCurley filed; at Ft. Cobb-Broxton, Cassi Crowell; at Binger-Oney, Seidina Caldwell; at Carnegie, a race developed between Ryan Clark and Michael Longhat; at Hinton, Carol Garrison; and Dustin Tackett has filed for re-election for his seat on the Caddo Kiowa Technology Center school board. School board filings run through tomorrow.

Hotel Ground-breaking Finally Set

After several years of delays, officials are ready to break ground on another new hotel in Chickasha. The Best Western Plus will be built just southeast of the Grady County Fairgrounds. Economic Development Director Christy Elkins announced the ground-breaking in an e-mail. The formal ground-breaking will be held at 3 o’clock Thursday afternoon.

Woman Arrested for Second DUI in Five Months

A Chickasha woman arrested for allegedly leaving the scene of an accident is charged with her second DUI in the last five months. 40-year old Rebecca Erin Kinslow was arrested by Chickasha police over the weekend, after a hit-and-run accident near 8th and Grand. Court documents indicate witnesses told police they saw Kinslow side-swipe a vehicle, and that she did not stop. The witnesses called police and even followed Kinslow to her home. Kinslow told police she did not know she hit another vehicle. Just last week, Kinslow pleaded guity to a misdemeanor DUI following an arrest in June. A judge gave her a five-year deferred sentence. Kinslow is now facing a felony DUI, and could be sentenced to a maximum of five years in prison and a $2,500 fine if convicted.

One Injured in Minco Crash

One person is hospitalized when a car and a pick-up collided southwest of Minco. 31-year old Joseph Mitchell of Chandler was last in critical condition in an Oklahoma City hospital with trunk and internal injuries. Theh Oklahoma Highway Patrol reports Chandler was hurt when his car was hit broadside by a pickup driven by 62-year old Randall Jensen of Pocasset. Jensen was not injured. The accident happened about 5 o'clock Sunday afternoon, three miles south and one mile west of Minco.

Site Teachers Recognized in Chickasha Schools

Chickasha schools are recognizing their site teachers of the year. One teacher from each school was selected for the honor. At the high school, it’s Spanish Teacher Karen Tillman. She's taught in the district for eight years. At the middle school, its 7th grade language arts teacher, Michael Voyles, his third year at the school. At Lincoln, its Tish Kennedy, a 6th grade teacher for 13 years. At Grand Avenue, its 4th grade teacher Janie Bennet, her second year at the school. And at Bill Wallace, it's Kourtney Lively, who has been teaching 1st grade for the last four years. All are now in the running for the district teacher of the year, which will be awarded in the spring.

School Board Filings Begin

School board filings begin today in public school and technology school districts statewide. At least one office in each district is up for grabs in most districts. For Chickasha Schools Board of Education, it's Office No. 3 currently held by Julie Badgett-Sinn. Candidates will file at the election board office in the county in which the district is located. For instance, while Blanchard has students from both Grady and McClain counties, candidates will go to the McClain County Election Board in Purcell to file. There are also school board posts up for election for Canadian Valley Technology Center in Chickasha and El Reno, Caddo Kiowa Technology Center in Ft. Cobb; and Mid-America Technology Center in Wayne.

12-Hour Shifts for Chickasha Police Officers May Continue

A closed-door meeting to discuss a contract with the Fraternal Order of Police is part of tonight's regular meeting of the Chickasha City Council. Among issues to be reviewed are the status of current negotiations for the current fiscal year; and to continue the temporary 12-hour shift officers have been working the last several months. The council will also discuss providing cell phones to some police officers for business purposes. The council will also discuss selling a home at 1621 Park that was part of a settlement. The council is expected to declare the property as surplus, and allow a real estate broker to sell the home. The council is expected to approve advertising for bids to expand the sewer line around 9th and Country Club Road, due to the proposal to enlarge the Sleepy Hollow II residential area next year. Estimated cost is upwards of $500,000. The council will also schedule next year's city council election, for April 3rd of 2018. The filing period will be in February.

Grady, Caddo County Extension Office Changes

Some changes made at the OSU Extension Offices in Grady and Caddo counties. David Nowlin, who had been splitting time between both offices as ag educator, has returned full-time to Caddo County. He'll be working as both ag educator and with 4H Youth Development. In his monthly newsletter mailed out last week, Nowlin said budget cuts will not allow the Caddo County office to hire a full-time 4H educator. However, he said his efforts to split time between the counties over the last 16 months allowed both areas to save some money, and both will be in better financial shape for  2018. Nowlin's departure from the Chickasha office leaves Grady County without an ag educator for the time being. Nowlin did say he'll still be helping out with a few Grady County projects. Also, specialists from the extension office in Duncan will be available.

Community Blood Drive this Week

KOOL and RANCH radio stations are teaming up with Standley Systems to host a community blood drive this week. Zelda McCall with the Oklahoma Blood Institute says donations lag a bit during the time between Thanksgiving and the New Year, so she urges all who are eligible to donate. She says if you know of a cancer patient or other individual who needs blood, you can credit your donation to that person.

The blood drive is this Thursday, Dec. 7th at Standley Systems headquarters at 6th and Iowa. It runs from 9 am. to 1:30 p.m.

Church to Hold Community Christmas Meal

A local church will open its doors for a free community Christmas dinner. Full Gospel Church will serve the meal this Saturday, Dec. 9th. At the same time, the church will have a coat drive, and offer Blessing Bags to some families. The meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday at the church, 722 N. 10th. Students Disciplined Following School Threat

Threats by a student to shoot up Chickasha High School this week were determined to not be a credible threat. But unconfirmed reports say at least one student was expelled after the incident. School officials called Chickasha police after learning of the threats Wednesday afternoon. A police department press release stated a student was playing with a smart phone app which made simulated gunshot noises. A second student recorded a snap chat video and added a caption saying "This is what it will sound like when I shoot up the school." The snap chat was sent to several individuals. After interviewing the two students and their parents, authorities said it was an extremely poor joke. On Thursday, a statement on the Chickasha schools Facebook page said appropriate procedures were followed, and that they approach every threat with the possibility it could be carried out. A second Facebook post from the school said appropriate disciplinary action was taken, following guidelines in the student handbook. More than 100 comments and/or reactions from individuals followed the school district Facebook posts.

Military Vet, Possibly with PTSD, Jailed in Double-Homicide

A military veteran who may have been suffering from PTSD is charged with the shooting deaths of his wife and his step-father. 34-year old Shane Josiah Kirk was formally charged with two counts of murder in Stephens County district yesterday. A judge denied bond. Authorities found the bodies of Jessica Kirk and Dennis Duncan in the Kirk home Wednesday night. Court documents indicate that Shane Kirk took his son to the hospital earlier Wednesday, claiming both had been poisoned. Jessica Kirk later arrived at the hospital, and told doctors that her husband suffered from PTSD, and his behavior had become paranoid and erratic. She said she had tried to take him to a veteran's hospital to get help. During his arraignment, Kirk told the judge he went to Colorado recently to get away from people who were trying to hurt him. He also told the judge he believe he suffered from mental illness. Kirk is reported to have told the judge he wanted to represent himself, but it was recommended he hire an attorney, or have one appointed. A preliminary hearing conference is set for Feb. 27th.

School Board Filings Open Monday

Individuals who want to be involved in developing policy and overseeing operations in their public schools will be able to file for school board posts next week. At least one school board office in nearly every school district will be open for candidates. In Chickasha, office No. 3 held by Julie Badgett-Sinn will be open. Candidates must live within the boundaries of the office they are filing for in order to be eligible. The filing period runs next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. School elections, if needed, will be in February.

Hearwarming Story of a Chickasha Sooner Fan

A nice story in the Oklahoman today about a Chickasha man in Dallas for the Big 12 Conference title game between OU and TCU. Jennie Carlson writes about retired banker Bill Graves, among many who are Sooner fans. The 81-year old Graves is making the trip with his grandsons Bron and Kyle. Carlson writes of Graves love for the Sooners, and for his late wife of nearly 56 years. Shirley Graves died in 2012 after a nearly 20 year battle with lupus. Graves was her constant caregiver and companion.

Pursuit Suspect Apologizes

New developments in the incident where a man led police on a lengthy pursuit earlier this month. Brenton Hager has written a letter apologizing for what he did. Hager led Oklahoma City police on an extended chase on November 10th, after he was spotted driving a stolen truck out of Grady County. He even posted part of the pursuit live on social media. He writes that he wants to apologize to family, friends, law enforcement, and all those negatively affected by his actions. He says he understands he'll have to face the consequences. He said he can't explain why he made the choices he did. Hager faces numerous charges, including assault on a police officer, endangering others, unauthorized use of a vehicle and driving without a license.

UTV Crash Critically Injures Driver

A Caddo County man was last in critical condition after a UTV crash. 32-year old Scott Brewer of Apache suffered head and internal injuries in the accident that happened west of Fletcher in Comanche County Tuesday night. Brewer was air-lifted to an Oklahoma City hospital. The Highway Patrol reports that Brewer and a passenger on the utility vehicle ran off a road and hit a cable stretched between two poles. Both men were ejected, and the UTV overturned and landed on top of Brewer. The passenger, 46-year old Billy Ridley, also of Apache, was not injured. OHP says Brewer may have been drinking. Neither man was wearing a helmet.

Student to Discuss Research at State Capital

A USAO student will have the opportunity to discuss her research on water resource managment to state lawmakers. Jaclyn McCasland of Anadarko will talk about her project next March during Research Day at the state capital. The annual program informs not only lawmakers but the public about research projects at state colleges and universities. McCasland is a chemistry major, and recently completed work on how the management of surface water resources is a growing concern in central Oklahoma. Much of her research was done at USAO's own habitat area.

Teachers Surprised with Funds

A regional financial institution has awarded thousands of dollars in grants to Oklahoma teachers. Arvest Bank contributed more than $16,000 to 33 teachers who were nominated for the bank's We Love Oklahoma Teachers Campaign. In this region, Cassidey Edwards of Chickasha's Bill Wallace School; and Rebekah McAnally of Elgin Middle school were among those presented with $500. Teachers from 90 school districts were nominated for the awards.

Cotton Crop Loans Available

Oklahoma's cotton crop is said to be decent this year. More acres than normal were planted, the yields said to be good, and more cotton is being moved through the ginning process. Mark Jackson with the Grady County Farm Service Agency says cotton producers may want to consider a recourse seed cotton loan.

The loans are available through March 31st. The national loan rate for seed cotton put under loan is 49 cents per pound.

Separate Crashes Send Two to OKC Hospitals

Monday was a bad day for traffic accidents in Chickasha. The day started with a head-on collision between semis north of town, and ended with a two-vehicle collision southwest of the city. Individuals in both crashes were air-lifted to Oklahoma City hospitals. A pickup and an SUV collided at U.S. Highway 92 and Country Club Road about 4:30 p.m. yesterday. An unidentified woman was air-lifted to Oklahoma City with unknown injuries. Another unidentified driver was not seriously hurt. Chickasha police are still investigating, but said it appeared one driver may have failed to yield from a stop sign.

In yesterday morning's head-on semi crash north of town, police say the driver of a southbound big rig crossed the centerline and hit an oncoming semi. 31-year old Dexter Pratt of Conroe, Texas was air-lifted to an OKC hospital, but we called two hospitals, and he was not in either one. 33-year old Roman Betancourt of Ft. Worth was treated at the scene. That accident happened at 2 o'clock Monday morning, a half-mile north of Chickasha on U.S. Highway 81. Police are still looking into what caused Pratt to cross into oncoming traffic. The accident closed the highway in both directions for about four hours.

Mixed Bag of Consumer Spending News

Mixed news in the local economy for consumer spending. Throughout Grady County, estimated spending for September is $40 million, off about 2.4 percent from August. The number is also down more than 11.5 percent compared to the September of last year. However, September is the third largest month for consumer spending so far in 2017. We estimate consumer spending when we see the sales tax revenue for the county, and factor in the sales tax rate of 3/4 of a penny. Grady County collected nearly $600,000 in sales tax revenue this month, based on the September sales. Here's where that money goes: The Grady County Fairgrounds gets nearly $200,000; Grady Memorial Hospital collects more than $175,000; Seven senior nutrition centers share nearly $100,000...each one gets $14,000. 20 fire districts share $100,000, with each one to get $5,000; Tuttle EMS receives $18,000; and Rush Springs EMS gets $4,500.

In Chickasha, consumer spending for September was about $24 million, up slightly from August. The total is up about 11 percent from September of 2016. The city collected more than $900,000 in sales taxes, up slightly from the previous month, and an increase of some $11,000 from the same time last year.

Use tax collections at both the county and city levels were up. Grady County received $90,000 this month, up from $51,000 from the same time a year ago. Chickasha received nearly $120,000 which is 30 percent higher than last month, and three times the amount received last year in September, which was $37,000. Use tax collections are those paid on Internet purchases and are not included in the sales tax revenue numbers.

Library to Hold Food for Fines

Once again this year, the Chickasha Library will allow those who are late in returning their materials to pay fines by helping hungry families. It's called Food for Fines. Throughout the month of December, the library will erase your late fee, as long as you contribute some non-perishable food to the Emergency Food Pantry. Librarian Lilly Huckaby says the dollar amount of the food does not have to match the fine. Huckaby says many library patrons will donate food, even it they don't have overdue books. She also said the Food for Fines program cannot be used for any lost materials. Those items will have to be paid for. The Food for Fines program starts Friday, December 1st.

You Can Avoid Food Poisoning During the Holidays

Food-borne illnesses seem to occur more often during the holidays. Many times, it's because foods are not thoroughly cooked. Meats are among the foods that can cause someone to be sick, if the internal temperature doesn't reach a level hot enough to kill bacteria. Susan Routh with Grady County OSU Extension.

To make sure foods are cooked to the proper temperature, use a meat thermometer and be sure to wash it with hot, soapy water before and after every use.

One Hospitalized When Semis Collide

U.S. Highway 81 north of Chickasha was shut down for a several hours this morning when two semis collide head-on. Chickasha police say a southbound semi went left of center and struck a northbound semi. Both drivers were trapped for an unknown amount of time before being freed by Chickasha Fire and EMS. Authorities say the driver of the southbound semi was air-lifted to an Oklahoma City hospital with non-life threatenign injuries. The other driver was treated at scene but did not have to go to the hospital. The accident happened around 2 a.m. on U.S. Highway 81 about one-half mile north of U.S. Highway 62. The crash closed the highway in both directions for about four hours.

Winter Will be Here, Eventually

While recent weather has been very pleasant for this time of year, it can turn at any time. Grady County Emergency Management Director Dale Thompson says now is a good time to prepare for any snow and ice that may hit when winter does arrive. He has a couple of suggestions when it comes to your vehicle.

Thompson also says its a good idea to have a full tank of gas, and, have a shovel and some kitty litter handy in case you get stuck. He also suggests having some high-energy snacks available if you happen to get stranded. Most of all, he says don't get out in the bad weather unless its absolutely necessary.

Mickey Garrison Passes

Longtime educator and athletic director, Mickey Garrison has died. Garrison passed away Thanksgiving morning at his home at the age of 75. For several years, he and Terrill McBride were leaders for AAU Baseball, where they ran tournaments in Chickasha, as well as Texas, Arkansas, and Florida. Born in Okeene in 1942, the family moved to Wayne where he played baseball. He taught math and science at Clinton, McLish, and Cleo Springs, and coached baseball at Apache. He came to Chickasha to be the district's athletic director and also taught 7th grade math. He retired in 2004. Garrison is survived by his wife Helen; daughter Rhonda and husband Kelly Burrows of Chickasha; daughter Kelly and her husband Johnny Ditmore of Texas; and son Mike and his wife Christi of Amarillo. Funeral mass for Mickey Garrison will be at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning at Holy Name Catholic Church. Arrangements are with Sevier Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oklahoma Parkinson's Foundation. 

Turnpike Crash Holds Up Traffic

The H.E. Bailey Turnpike southwest of Chickasha was closed for almost an hour last night, following a non-injury crash between three vehicles. Both westbound lanes of traffic were shut down after the crash that happened near Mile Marker 75 about  7 o'clock last night. No details of the accident were released.

Energy Industry Bullish Nationwide

There are more oil and gas wells actively drilling across the country this week. The national count was up by eight rigs to a total of 923, which is up about 55 percent from the same time a year ago. Matt Skinner with the Oklahoma Corporation Commission has the count across the Sooner State.
