One Dead in Weekend Crash near Blanchard

A fatal crash near Blanchard claims the life of an Enid man. 64-year old Gregory Skinner died in the accident that happened Friday night on South MacArthur Avenue. Skinner died at the scene. The highway patrol says the accident remains under investigation. Skinner was driving a Dodge Ram 2500 pickup. The roadway was wet at the time of the accident.

New Public Works Director on Board for City of Chickasha

The City of Chickasha's new public works director has hit the ground running. David Buchanan has about 20 years’ experience in municipal projects. He's a native Oklahoman who has worked in water and waste water treatment for a number of years, working in Muskogee with a private contractor, and also working in Puerto Rico for a time before taking a post in Georgia. The last few years he's been working for the city of Bethany. Buchanan is re-directing the city's use of inmate labor, concentrating on big projects instead of several smaller projects at one time.

The city is planning on some additional street improvement projects this summer, and is also planning for upgrades for Shannon Springs Park.

Pursuit Suspect Could Face Formal Charges Today

A woman arrested for leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase last Friday could hear any potential charges against her today. 26-year old Shelby LaFontaine was arrested after the pursuit started on the H.E. Bailey Turnpike in Grady County near Newcastle. Speeds reached nearly 150 miles per hour before she eventually pulled over in the Norman area. She was arrested on complaints of attempting to elude; driving without a license; receiving, possessing or concealing stolen property; having a firearm after adjudication; and possession of contraband in a penal institution. Prosecutors will decide what, if any formal charges to file.

City Council Candidate to Hold Meet-and-Greet

A Chickasha city council candidate has scheduled a meet-and-greet to get to know the community. Devin Gagliardo is one of three candidates running for Ward 4. He's lived in Grady County nearly his entire life and has lived in Chickasha for seven years. He'll will hold the meet-and-greet session next Monday, Feb. 4th at Paradise Donuts from 3:00 until 4:00 p.m.

Grady County Spring Stock Show Begins

The annual Grady County Junior Livestock Show gets underway today. This is the 83rd year for the event, which showcases the work of local youth caring for sheep, goats, cattle, and pigs. Many exhibitors spent the weekend moving their animals into pens at the Grady County Fairgrounds and Events Center. The swine show gets underway at 11 o'clock this morning. The judge is Kelly Chrisman of Pauls Valley. More than 200 students wil be showing animals over the course of the next four days. The top 125 animals will go up for bid in the premium auction Thursday night.

Arts Council Meeting to Discuss Garage Sale, Festival

A benefit garage sale and information about a fall arts festival will be among the topics of discussion during this month's meeting of the Chickasha Area Arts Council. The group will meet at the 7th Street Arts Connection Center at 7th and Arkansas at 7:00 p.m. tomorrow night. The proceeds from the garage sale will help with the 11th annual Rock Island Arts festival coming up in October. The garage sale is this Friday and Saturday at the Arts Connection Center. The Arts Council's new consignment shop will also be open during the garage sale.

High-Speed Chase Leads to Arrest

A pursuit on the H.E. Bailey Turnpike Friday reached speeds of nearly 150 miles per hour. State troopers did manage to safely get the car pulled over and arrest the driver, who will be in the Grady County Jail all weekend. The chase started about 3:00 p.m. Friday near mile marker 102 in the Newcastle area. KFOR TV reports that a trooper saw two men on the side of the turnpike and then a Cadillac sedan sped away. It’s reported the trooper thought drugs were being dumped from the car. The pursuit went into the Oklahoma City area before the driver pulled over near State Highway 9 and May Avenue. The driver, 26-year old Shelby LaFontaine, was arrested on complaints of attempting to elude, driving without a license, receiving, possessing or concealing stolen property, having a firearm after adjudication, and possession of contraband in a penal institution. Prosecutors will decide what, if any formal charges to file against LaFontaine. Her initial appearance could be as early as Monday.

State Rep Oppposes 'Mineral Rights Owner' Bill

It's a wolf in sheep's clothing. That's how Chickasha State Representative David Perryman feels about what's being called a "mineral rights owner" bill under consideration at the state capital. In his media column this week, Perryman says HB 2150 would be more beneficial for big oil companies that own a growing percentage of Oklahoma's mineral rights. He writes that campaign contributions from big energy companies could be more influential to lawmakers than what is actually best for Oklahomans. Perryman says in the last few years lawmakers have passed bills that are more suitable to oil companies instead of protecting state residents. He says cities that have tried to protect residents from encroaching oil companies have either been sued, or, threatened with lawsuits from some energy firms.

1st National Names New Board Member

Chickasha businessman Blake Elliott has been named to the board of directors for the First National Bank and Trust. Elliott is vice president of finance with Standley Systems, which was founded by his great-grandfather, Fred Standley. A Chickasha High School and Oklahoma State graduate, Blake has held many posts with the family business, managing service, warehouse, inventory, installation teams, and contracts. He's a former city councilman, a graduate of Leadership Chickasha, has served with The Festival of Light and Chamber of Commerce. He was also honored by the Journal Record with one of its 30 under 30 awards.

Antique Fire-Fighting Equipment May Head to Lawton

In Lawton, officials are hoping to bring two historic pieces of firefighting equipment back to southwest Oklahoma. City officials will ask the city council for permission to accept an offer from the Oklahoma State Firefighters Museum to bring an 1850s era horse-drawn hose cart and a 1913 fire truck home. The Lawton Constitution reports the restored units were donated several years ago to the state museum, but it has limited room and an expanding collection that prevents some items from being displayed.

Bond Denied for Murder Suspect

A murder suspect will remain behind bars after bond is denied during his initial court appearance. 18-year old Malcolm Jackson was in Grady County District Court this week for his arraignment on a first degree murder charge. He is one of six individuals implicated in the shooting death of Trey Adams which took place outside Adams' Chickasha home last month. On-line court records indicate that Jackson is to announce his attorney by March 29^th with a preliminary hearing conference scheduled for April 17th.

Arrest Made in Hate Crime Report

A Chickasha man is behind bars accused of a hate crime. 37-year old Trent Proctor faces felony charges for allegedly beating a man because of his sexual orientation. Police say the victim was nearly beaten beyond recognition. He suffered a broken jaw, a fractured eye socket and lost several teeth in the attack that happened the early morning hours of New Year's Day. A police affidavit indicates the victim told investigators he had gone to a friend's home to celebrate the new year, when he was approached by a known individual. The victim was hit in the face and head more than a dozen times with a metal pole, because the victim said he was gay. Proctor is charged with felony counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and maiming. Proctor remains in the Grady County Jail in lieu of a $100,000 bond.

Ft. Sill Soldiers Return from Deployment

A homecoming ceremony held for about 70 soldiers returning home from a deployment to the Middle East. Troops with the 31st Air Defense Artillery Brigade at Ft. Sill were greeted by family and friends. The unit spent the last nine months in the Persian Gulf region with the Headquarters Battery to the U.S. Central Command area. The group included Col. Lisa Bartel who took command of the brigade just three days before the deployment. Brig. Gen. Randall McEntire is the director of the Air and Missile Defense Cross Functional Team. At the homecoming, McEntire praised the soldiers for their work, which included the re-organization of the air defense units there.

Ninnekah FFAers Among those Celebrating FFA Week

Youth throughout the region and the state who wear those recognizable blue and gold jackets are celebrating their organization's work. This week is National FFA week. FFA chapters provide many opportunities for their members to develop practical skills they'll use throughout their lives. Bruce Trammell is the vice president of the Ninnekah FFA.

Trammell is in a supervised agriculture experience project for swine entrepreneurship and works for a local farrier.

Anita Hill to Speak at USAO Benefit

Anita Hill, whose testimony during the confirmation hearings of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas made national headlines in 1991, is a guest speaker for a weekend event to benefit USAO. Hill is now a professor of social policy and law at Brandeis University in Massachusetts. Her presentation will benefit USAO's Center for Social Justice and Racial Healing. USAO President John Feaver says more than 150 people are expected at the event. He says Hill was eager to be the guest speaker.

Hill's presentation will be held at the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City at 6:00 p.m. tomorrow night. The USAO Center for Social Justice and Racial Healing is a program geared toward educating and inspiring individuals who are dedicated to the pursuit of social justice and advancing the common good.

2018 a Good Year for Continental Resources

Continental Resources net income for 2018 fell just short of $1 billion. The company reports that earnings were about $2.60 per diluted share. Chairman and CEO Harold Hamm said 2018 fiscal year production was just under 300,000 barrels of oil-equivalent per day, an increase of 23 percent from 2017. He also said 2018 was a breakout year for his Oklahoma City-based company with significant cash flow generation and debt reduction, and corporate returns that compare favorably with peers and are competitive with other industries. Hamm said Continental will continue to deliver strong corporate returns in 2019, coupled with growth that can adjust to various market conditions.

96th Chickasha Chamber Banquet Scheduled

The Chickasha Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for its annual banquet. 2019 marks the 96th anniversary of the business-oriented group. The event will feature highlights of chamber activities over the past year and goals and objectives for the coming year. Several awards will be presented including Civic Hall of Fame, Community Advocate of the Year, Citizen of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, and Manufacturer of the Year. Nominations are being sought for each of these awards. The chamber banquet will be Friday, March 8th at the USAO ballroom. Tickets are $75 per person and corporate sponsorships are available.

Swine Winners from Southwest District Stock Show

We have some left-over news from last week's Southwest District Livestock Show. The two-day swine show had nearly 1,500 animals pre-registered. For the barrows, Jolie Davis of Walters had the grand champion, Garrison Straka of Yukon had the reserve, and Laramie Thetford of Merritt had the bronze. For commercial gilts, Hadley Cooper of Ampo 4H had the grand, Bryson Whisenant of Yukon had the reserve, and Andrew Ford of Alex had the bronze. For the pure bred gilts, Hadley Cooper of Ampo also had the grand, Kade Pendley of Cyril had the reserve, and Gage Winters of Altus had the bronze. Also, the Vernon Crose Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Bruce Trammell of Ninnekah FFA.

Funerals are Saturday for Train Crash Victims

A double-funeral will be held for a Ninnekah man and his son who died when their truck was hit by a train last week. Funerals for 97-year old Max Thomas and 64-year old Pat Thomas will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Epworth Methodist Church. Max was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Arrangements are with McRay Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation for Parkinson's research.

Murder Suspects Caught in Lawton

The two primary suspects wanted in connection with the shooting death of a Chickasha teen last month are in custody. Malcolm Jackson and Dmillion Williams were caught by Lawton police Monday night. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation reported on its Facebook page that authorities found them while patrolling for suspects in an armed robbery that had occurred there. There was a short foot pursuit before they were taken into custody. Both were wanted by the OSBI in connection with the shooting death of 18-year old Trey Adams which occurred just outside Adams’ home a little more than three weeks ago. Jackson, who is 18, was taken to the Grady County Jail. Williams, who is 16, is being held at the juvenile detention center in Lawton. They are among six teenagers and young adults arrested in connection with Adams' death. The others are Troy Jennings, Brooklyn Nelson, Vivian Sanders and Montana Simpson. All six are from the Oklahoma City metro area.

One Hospitalized Following Ninnekah Crash

A traffic accident in Ninnekah sends one man to an Oklahoma City hospital. The accident happened at U.S. Highway 81 and Highway 277 about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Ninnekah Police Chief Scott Miller says a pickup was southbound on Highway 81 and tried to turn east on Old Highway 277. The driver failed to yield to a northbound pickup driven by Gerald Farmer of Marlow. Farmer suffered a head injury and was taken to an Oklahoma City hospital. A woman in the pickup with Farmer was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital to be treated for less serious injuries.

Anadarko Woman Faces Child Abuse Charges

A teenager calls Anadarko police to tell them her mother was being abusive to her and her 3-year old sister. Authorities have arrested 44-year old Jennifer Lynn Tartsah, and she is facing two felony counts of child abuse by injury. Court documents from Anadarko police indicate that Tartsah is alleged to have thrown a chair at her three-year old daughter and punched her teenaged daughter in the face. The Lawton Constitution reports the teen told police that Tartsah had been drinking prior to the abuse. Tartsah remains in the Caddo County jail in lieu of a $25,000 bond.

Former Councilman Warns of City Expenses

in Light of Infrastructure Repair Needs

A former Chickasha city councilman warns the current council about using funds for economic development projects, when the city needs tens of millions of dollars in infrastructure repairs. Mark Keeling attended this week's council meeting, and addressed the council's recent approval of about $500,000 in matching grants awarded to make improvements in the downtown area. Keeling said with some $200 million infrastructure repairs needed, the council should be guarded about tax fund use because they'll need the community's support should they seek a tax increase for the infrastructure repairs.

Keeling stepped down from the council last month, as he is moving his permanent residence out of the city limits.

Advice to Use Tax Refund to Start Savings Account

For individuals and families who hope to get refund from the IRS, many will use their windfall to splurge on things they can't normally afford. Some financial advisors say it's a good time to put that money away for future use. They say that saving money for the long-term starts with having a goal in mind. Beth Armstrong with Grady County 4H has tips from OSU Extension.

Armstrong says to talk to your bank or credit union about savings accounts that may pay higher interest rates than traditional accounts. However, some of those premium accounts have restrictions or fees for early withdrawal.

One Arrested in Multi-County Theft Probe

Patience has paid off for a couple of law enforcement groups in separate investigations which have been on-going for several months. The first resulted in the arrest of a Chickasha man in connection with a multi-county theft ring. We first reported on this investigation a couple of weeks ago, when the Grady County Sheriff's Office discovered a lot of stolen oil field equipment, heavy machinery, and other items near the Winter Creek Golf Club. Investigators have 40-year old Justin Paul Anderson in custody after a warrant was issued for his arrest. Anderson was wanted in connection with thefts from Lindsay to Kingfisher. Grady County Undersheriff Phil Blevins says they picked up Anderson from the Oklahoma County jail last week, after he was arrested on another theft complaint. Anderson is facing five charges in Grady County alone, including possession of stolen property, false insurance claims, and possession of a firearm after conviction. Anderson is being held on a $50,000 bond.

Task Force Investigation Nets Arrest of Suspect

The second investigation was with the Caddo County District Attorney's Task Force. 32-year old Eric Casey Zeiset of Amber is in custody, accused of crimes ranging from having explosives, to possession of drugs, firearms, and a stolen vehicle. Zeiset is facing nearly 20 charges in Grady County. It’s a case the task force has been working on since last May. Our partners at KWTV News 9 report that investigators had tapped Zeiset's phone and that more than 80 percent of 133 subscribers had confirmed criminal histories. Authorities got a break in the case in December, when Verden police made a traffic stop on a man found to have methamphetamine in his car. He is reported to have said he got the drugs from Zeiset, saying he distributes them on a large scale. Zeiset is jailed on a $250,000 bond.

Chix Council OKs Pact with Chickasaw Nation

An agreement between the City of Chickasha and the Chickasaw Nation may lead to better streets in the city. Last night, the city council approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the tribe which may provide federal funds for street improvements. City Councilman Oscar Nelson questioned if the use of the funds would be tied to federal rules and regulations. City Manager John Noblitt said the city has previously adopted projects with both federal and state regulations. The streets listed on the agreement are based on where tribal members live. The council also approved waiving field rental fees at the sports complex for both Chickasha and Dibble schools for upcoming tournaments. The panel also waived fees for Grand Assembly of God to use Shannon Springs Park for its annual Easter egg hunt on April 20th. In other council considerations, after a 30-minute closed door meeting, the council took no action on an unidentified economic development project.

Optum Energy to Expand Work Force with Job Fair

An energy company with operations in Chickasha is expanding its local workforce. Optum Energy develops products that reduce drag in oil pipelines, which allows the oil to move through the lines faster. The company has a number of openings and will be having a job fair at the Grady County Fairgrounds tomorrow. On-site interviews will be held for a variety of positions. Potential employees will be required to work weekly rotating shifts. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED. The job fair will be from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Grady County Fairgrounds Community Building. Get more information about the company on its website: www.optumenergy.com.

Scholarships Offered by Wichita and Affiliated Tribes

The Wichita and Affiliated Tribes will be offering three scholarships to tribal students this spring. These scholarships are $4,500 each and will be offered through the American Indian College Fund. Two of the scholarships will be awarded to students pursuing an under-graduate degree, and one is for a student pursuing a graduate degree. Applicants must be an enrolled Wichita tribal member. The scholarships will be for classes that will start this fall. Application deadline is May 31^st. Students can fill out an application on-line at www.collegefund.org

Semi Involved in Fatal Crash

One person has died and another is hospitalized after a weekend crash involving a semi and a passenger vehicle near Tuttle. Authorities have not yet identified a woman who lost her life. Injured was 25-year old Jonathan Kyle Jones of Lindsay who was initially hospitalized in critical condition. Jones has been upgraded to serious condition this morning. Jones and the woman were both in a vehicle that collided with the semi. It wasn’t clear who was driving. The driver of the semi, 27-year old Dalton Charles Galliton of Randlett, was not injured. The accident happened just after 11:00 p.m. Friday on Highway 92 just southwest of Tuttle. The highway patrol is still looking into what happened. The accident blocked the highway for more than five hours.

Alleged Intruder Shot, Hospitalized

Also in Tuttle, the OSBI is looking into the shooting of an alleged intruder. No details are available, but KOCO-TV reports that an unidentified individual was air-lifted to an Oklahoma City hospital. Officials have not said how serious the injuries are. Tuttle police were called to a home to investigate just before 9:00 a.m. Sunday.

Binger Man's Death Considered a Homicide

The death of a Caddo County man is being called a homicide. The body of 57-year old Randy Joe Gathers of Binger was found in his home Saturday morning. Binger police were asked to do a welfare check on Gathers after he hadn't been seen for some time. The OSBI has been called in to lead the investigation. Authorities did not release any information about how Gathers may have died. Officials are asking anyone with information to call the OSBI Tip Line at 800-522-8017 or e-mail information to tips@osbi.ok.gov

Amber Police Officer's Condition Upgraded

An Amber police officer hospitalized after a shootout in Del City last weekend is improving. Marvin Ashe was working security at a store in Del City. He suffered a serious arm injury and was also shot in the stomach in a confrontation with a shoplifting suspect. We checked this morning, and Ashe has been upgraded from critical to serious condition.

Chickasaw Nation May Help Fund Chickasha Street Upgrades

The City of Chickasha may get some help from the Chickasaw Nation to pay for street improvements. The city council tonight will discuss a possible Memorandum of Understanding with the tribe to add the streets to the Tribal Transportation Program of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Tribal officials may provide funding for upgrades under a separate agreement if money is available. City Manager John Noblitt said the tribe would not be taking the streets into tribal trust and they would not be identified as tribal land. The city would still have to maintain the streets. The council will go behind closed doors to discuss an economic development proposal which could include the transfer of property, financing, or the creation of a proposal to entice a company to remain or locate in the city. The panel will also review an ordinance regarding the city's ban on smoking in public places. The Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust, or TSET, is recommending some changes that could allow the city to be eligible for up to $120,000 in grants. The council meets at 6:30 tonight at city hall.

Father, Son Perish in Train-Truck Collision

Tragedy in Ninnekah, as a father and son have died after their truck is hit by a train. Max and Pat Thomas were killed in the crash that happened in Ninnekah about 9:30 a.m. Friday. Ninnekah Police Chief Scott Miller said that Pat Thomas was driving the one-ton truck west on Peach Street. The truck was hit by a southbound Union Pacific train pulling 117 cars. Miller said it wasn't clear how fast the train was going. The truck was pushed about a half-mile down the tracks. Miller said there are no signal lights or crossing arms at the crossing. The accident closed the road into Ninnekah for several hours.

Man Faces Assault, Maiming Allegations

A Chickasha man is jailed on a six-figure bond after police respond to an assault complaint. 37-year old Trent Proctor was taken into custody when officers were dispatched to the 2000 block of South 22nd about 3:30 a.m. Friday. Details of the arrest weren't immediately available. Proctor has been charged with felony counts of assault and battery with a deadly weapon and maiming. His bond was set at $100,000.

Valentine's Day Assault Suspect in Custody

Police arrest another man in a separate assault complaint, this one involving gunfire. Officers were called to a home near 9^th and Minnesota about 8:30 p.m. Thursday. A police affidavit indicates that a couple were arguing over the suspect's drinking, and that he threw a Valentine's Day gift at her. The couple got into a scuffle, both suffered minor injuries, and she left the house and got into her car. The suspect is alleged to have gotten a pistol and shot the bumper of the car with the woman inside. The woman was not hit by the bullet. In custody is 47-year old Darrin Travis Bradley. He has been formally charged with a felony for having a firearm after conviction, and a misdemeanor for assault and battery. He remains in jail on a $20,000 bond.

Two Hurt in Turnpike Crash

Two people are hospitalized after their SUV crashes on the H.E. Bailey Turnpike. 79-year old James Frazier and 72-year old Linda Mason, both of Oklahoma City were taken to a Norman hospital where they were admitted in good condition with head and trunk injuries. The accident happened about 2:30 a.m. this morning on the H.E. Bailey Spur on-ramp at the junction of Highway 4. Their vehicle ran off the roadway and hit the guardrail.

Firefighters Gather for Annual Training

Firefighters throughout southwest Oklahoma will gather for wildland fire training today. It's a program named for a Rush Springs fire fighter who lost his life battling a wildfire. The Destry Horton Wildland Training School will be held at Ft. Sill this weekend. This is the 8th year for the program. About 200 professional and volunteer firefighters participate in the training which includes 12 workshops. Horton died battling a wildfire near Marlow in 2006. He was employed as a Chickasha firefighter and volunteered on his day off when he suffered critical burns. He battled his injuries for several weeks before he died in an Oklahoma City hospital. Officials say southwest Oklahoma could see heavy smoke coming from the east part of Ft. Sill as part of the training today and tomorrow.

City of Chickasha Brings on New Public Works Director

A new director for the City of Chickasha's public works department is on the job. David Buchanan has more than 20 years’ experience in the public works field. He’s spent the last eight years in Bethany working in numerous areas, with the last two as public works director. Buchanan will also have Parks and Recreation, including the city's sports complex under his watch. He previously worked in Georgia for 13 years before moving to Oklahoma. The Chickasha post has been vacant since Rob Camp stepped down last spring. Steven Adams had been filling in as interim public works director. Buchanan’s employment was posted on the city’s Facebook page and it said that he and his team have been tackling projects submitted by the public on the city's website. That includes cleaning debris from the city's storm drains. Anyone can suggest ideas for public works or any department on the Request Tracker link on the city’s website, www.chickasha.org

New Grocery Store Sets Grand Opening

The long wait for Chickasha's newest grocery store is about to come to an end. The new Aldi's store is scheduled to have its grand opening next week. The store has been remodeling the former Staples store for about the last year. The doors will open next Thursday, Feb. 21st, and the first 100 customers will have a chance to win Aldi's gift cards valued up to $100. The store is known for its organic foods and low-priced produce. The store will be open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

About 240 cattle were shown at the Southwest District Livestock Show yesterday. 27 market steers were led through the ring, with Hayden Taliferro of Sterling showing the grand champion. He picked up the top prize of $1,000. William Hasenbeck of Elgin had the reserve and Avery Smith of Yukon, the bronze. There were 31 prospect steers, with Cooper Cummins of Hollis exhibiting the grand champion and collecting $500. Tommy Glover of Elgin had the reserve and Taylor Glover, also of Elgin, had the bronze. There were 185 heifers, with Cody Courtney of Ft. Cobb-Broxton taking the grand champion honors and a $1,000 check. Cara Cummins of Hollis had the reserve and Ciera Collins of Frederick had the bronze. The swine show is underway today with more than 1,400 animals pre-registered. It will take two days to parade all those animals in front of the judge. The Chickasha FFA is live-streaming the show at www.livestream.com/chickashaffa

Also at the stock show yesterday, Jerry Arthur was recognized for his many years of service on the stock show’s board of directors.

GOP Precinct Meetings, County Convention Scheduled

Grady County Republicans will be meeting for their precinct meetings and county convention next week. They will be electing state and district committee members, and will also elect county delegates to the state convention which will be held in April. The precinct meetings and county convention will be next Thursday, Feb. 21st at 6:30 p.m. at Canadian Valley Technology Center.

Regional Consumer Spending is Down Slightly

Consumer spending throughout Grady County in December was down from what was a real good month in November. It's estimated that $116 million in taxable goods and services were purchased in the final month of 2018. That was down about 12 percent from November, though it was an increase of about 10 percent from December of 2017. We get a good idea of the consumer spending when we see the county’s sales tax revenue each month. For February (which represents December consumer spending) the county received nearly $870,000. Then, we use a simple math formula which includes the county's three-quarters of a penny sales tax. In addition to the sales tax revenue, the county's use tax collections, which are paid on Internet purchases, were up from $120,000 in February of 2017 to $185,000 this February. For the City of Chickasha, consumer spending in December was estimated at $29 million. The city collected more than $1.1 million in sales tax revenue from its sales tax rate of 3.75 cents on the dollar. The city's use tax collections were also significantly higher, from $54,000 in February fo 2017 to $126,000 this month.

Former State Lawmaker Leads Child Advocacy Group

After spending a dozen years in the state legislature, former State Representative Joe Dorman of Rush Springs now serves as director of the Oklahoma Institute for Child Advocacy. It's a non-profit group with a mission to be a voice for Oklahoma youth. Dorman says they were able to get a lot of things done at the state capital last year.

The institute has been around for more than 30 years. Dorman says they will have a child advocacy day at the state capital on May 8th. Dorman will be our guest on our KOOL Konversation program this weekend.

Chix City Hall Skeds Ward 2 Meeting

Chickasha residents living in Ward 2 will have an opportunity to meet with their council representatives and other city officials. It's part of a continuing series by city officials to hear concerns of constituents. The meeting will be on Tuesday, Feb. 26th at 6:30 p.m. at city hall. Ward Two council representatives Joe Molder and Kim Loggins, and city manager John Noblitt are expected to be on hand. Residents can e-mail questions ahead of time to info@chickasha.org. The meeting is expected to last about an hour. Similar meetings for residents in Wards 3 and 4 will be held in the coming months. A previous meeting has already been held for Ward 1.

Southwest District Livestock Show Continues

Day two of the Southwest District Livestock Show is underway. It's the cattle show, with about 300 head expected to go through the show ring at the Grady County Fairgrounds. There were about 300 animals in the sheep show yesterday. Colt Randall of Canute had the Grand Champion wether and picked up a $1,000 check. Kyra Elliott of El Reno had the reserve grand, and Kailen Urban of Mt. View-Gotebo had the bronze. For the ewes, Sayde Allen of Beckham County 4H had the grand champion and earned a $500 prize. Jack Thomas of Western Oklahoma Christian School had the reserve and Luke Thomas, also of Western Oklahoma Christian had the bronze. In the goat show yesterday, there were about 250 animals. Emry Lee of Elgin had both the grand and reserve wethers, picking up $750. Hadley Cooper of Ampo had the bronze. Grand and reserve grand champion doe goats were shown by Caden Church of Sentinel, who also collected $750. Madison Church of Sentinel had the bronze. Laurie Allen Elected to Chickasha School Board

Chickasha voters put a new face on the local school board. Laurie Allen picked up more than two out of every three votes in a three-candidate race for the board of education. With less than 1,000 voters participating, Allen collected 68 percent of the vote, defeating former school board member Dr. Bruce Storms and former school employee, Tim Miller. In the unofficial returns, Allen received 651 votes; Storms, 271; and Miller, 24. Allen's election means there will be three entirely new members on the five-member school board. Robyn Morse and Cara Gerdes ran unopposed for two other posts on the panel.

Ninnekah Voters Select Delanie Berry for Board of Ed

In Ninnekah, voters also put a new officer on the school board. Delanie Berry picked up 69 percent of the vote. She defeated incumbent Dale Thompson and Naomi Dietrich. With less than 200 voters casting ballots, Berry received 124 votes; Dietrich, 29; and Thompson, 27.

Candace Downey to Serve on Dibble School Board

In Dibble, Candace Downey picked of 54 percent of the vote to win a seat on the school board. Downey collected 59 votes; Gene Shiflett, 29; and Harold Ledgerwood, 21.

Run-off Needed for Newcastle School Board Post

In Newcastle, the incumbent school board member will have to go to a run-off. Gary Knowles drew two challengers, but none of the three candidates received a majority of votes. Tyler Riddle was the top vote-getter with 257 tallies, or 43 percent. Knowles received 233 votes, or 39 percent. The third candidate, Jeff Dingee, received 102 votes or 17 percent. The run-off will be held in April.

Ampo Voters OK Big Bond Issue

Amber-Pocasset voters gave their stamp of approval to a more than $24 million bond issue to build a new high school and junior high, and upgrade security throughout the district. The measure received 67 percent approval, 203 to 101. Superintendent Jerime Parker was pleased with the outcome, saying he's proud of the Ampo school district stake-holders and their commitment to the students. The bond issue will stretch over 17 years, and Parker hopes construction can begin later this fall. It will be a couple of years before the 22 new classrooms for the high school and junior high will be completed.

Lindsay Voters Narrowly OK Bond Issues

In Lindsay, two bond issues totaling about $1.5 million narrowly get the 60 percent super-majority needed for passage. A $1 million bond issue for technology upgrades passes by six votes, 366 to 234, or 61 percent approval. A $500,000 bond issue to purchase school buses passed, 378 to 225, or 63 percent approval.

Teen Speaks of Boyfriend's Death

The two main suspects accused of the shooting death of a Chickasha teenager are still on the run. Today, Trey Adams girlfriend is talking about that tragedy that occurred just a couple of weeks ago. 16-year old Rachel Simons tells our partners at KWTV News 9 that she hopes the two young men accused of killing Trey are brought to justice. Simons and Adams just learned that she was pregnant, and the two were planning their engagement. She talks about the horrific discovery the morning of Trey's death.

The OSBI is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest

of Dmillion Williams and Malcomb Jackson.

Southwest District Livestock Show Underway

A lot of livestock will be moving through the Grady County Fairgrounds show arena the next few days. The Southwest District Livestock Show begins today, with about 1,000 youth from 14 counties hauling their cattle, pigs, sheep, and goats to the area. It's believed to be the largest youth stock show next to the Oklahoma Youth Expo. Nearly 1,500 swine have been pre-entered, nearly 300 sheep and 300 head of cattle, and 250 goats. The sheep and goat shows are both today. The youth are competing for top prizes of $1,000. The Chickasha FFA will live stream each of the stock shows over the few days on Facebook. Amber Police Officer Injured in Shootout Still Critical

An off-duty Amber policeman, working security at a store in Del City, remains in critical condition after being injured in a shootout with a shoplifting suspect last weekend. 51-year old Marvin Asche was shot in the stomach and the elbow, and sources say he has already had one surgery. Asche is the assistant police chief at Amber, and was one of two law enforcement officers involved the shooting at a Wal-Mart in Del City Saturday night. The shoplifting suspect died after being shot by an unidentified Del City police officer who was called to the scene. The officer was shot in the leg and was treated and released from a hospital. The suspect, 25-year old Gabriel Lane Carter, had an outstanding felony warrant. The Del City officer was placed on administrative leave.

Chickasha School District Receives Delayed Funding

The Chickasha school district has received nearly $2.2 million that it was owed from Grady County. A computer glitch in the county treasurer's office is blamed on sending money meant for the district to the county's general fund for three straight months. Treasurer Robin Burton and treasurer’s clerk Ruth Bingham hand-delivered a check to the school district yesterday. Burton addressed the issue with county commissioners Monday morning, and says she will try to make sure the error doesn't happen again.

Chickasha School Superintendent Jack Herron was asked if the school district missed any payments because of the shortage.

The county agreed to pay any interest-income lost because of the mistake. That amount has not yet been determined and will be paid at a later date.

Late Payment, Supe's Contract On School Board Agenda

Herron is expected to discuss the payment error during tonight's meeting of the Chickasha school board. The panel is expected to go behind closed doors to discuss a revision of the superintendent's contract. The change would add new language that the current and future superintendents be required to notify the board of any employment outside the superintendent's work. That was one of the recommendations from a recent state auditor's report, after previous superintendent Dave Cash worked for a company while also employed by Chickasha schools. The school board is also to look at a proposal to pay employees twice a month instead of once a month, which would begin next school year if approved.

Annual School Elections Underway

A lot of Oklahoman's are going to the polls today in the annual school elections. Voters in Chickasha will decide among three candidates for Office No. 2 on the school board.Tim Miller, Laurie Allen, and Bruce Storms are running. There's also a school board election in Ninnekah, where incumbent Dale Thompson has two challengers in Delanie Berry and Naomi Dietrich. In Dibble, three candidates are on the ballot - Harold Ledgerwood, Gene Shiflett, and Candace Downey. Amber-Pocasset voters will decide a $23.4 million bond issue to build new high school and junior high classrooms and fund improvements in security at both the Amber and Pocasset schools. Lindsay voters are deciding two bond issues totaling $1.5 million for technology and transportation needs. Polls will be open until 7 o'clock tonight. A reminder for Grady County voters in Precinct No. 11 who previously voted at Aggreko Cooling Towers. That precinct has been changed to Grand Assembly of God in Chickasha, just east of 4th and Almar Drive. We will have special election coverage after the polls close tonight.

The Assistant Police Chief of Amber is critically injured in a weekend shootout at a Del City Wal-Mart. Marvin Asche was shot in the torso and an elbow during the confrontation. Ashe was working as a security guard at the store when he and a Del City police officer were confronted by a shoplifting suspect, when gunfire erupted. The suspect died in the shootout. The unidentified Del City officer was treated and released for his injuries.

Chickasha Schools Expect Big Check Today

A $2 million error that negatively impacted the Chickasha Public School District the last few months should be corrected today. We reported last week that a mistake in the Grady County Treasurer's Office withheld $2.2 million in ad valorem tax revenue that should have gone to Chickasha schools. After school officials asked the treasurer's office to look into the matter, it was determined that the funds were mistakenly put in the county budget. Records show the school was shorted more than $300,000 on November 30th, more than $1 million Dec. 31^st, and another $700,000 on Feb. 1st. Treasurer Robin Burton has apologized for the error, and will meet with county commissioners this morning to tell what happened. A check is expected to be delivered to Chickasha schools this afternoon.

Public Hearings Set for Chickasha Housing Plans

Public hearings regarding a new Chickasha housing addition, the construction of new duplexes, and the city's mobile vendor ordinance will be held by the city’s Planning Commission tomorrow. One hearing is to discuss the final plat of the Shadow Valley development near 25th and Country Club Road, and one is for the final plat for duplexes proposed near Valley View Theater and Atwoods. The Planning Commission will meet at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday at city hall.

School Elections set Tomorrow

Annual school elections will be held tomorrow. In Chickasha, three candidates are on the ballot for Office No. 2. Bruce Storms, Tim Miller and Laurie Allen are on the ballot. There are also school board elections in Ninnekah, Dibble, and Newcastle. There are school bond elections at Amber-Pocasset and Lindsay. At Amber-Pocasset, voters will decide a $23 million bond issue to build new high school and junior high classrooms. In Lindsay, there are two bond issues totaling about $1.5 million for technology and transportation needs. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. tomorrow. County Road Near Ninnekah Re-Opens

Motorists in the Ninnekah area are again able to use Sooner Road south of State Highway 19. County Commissioner Ralph Beard said crews have finished installing a new tin horn on Sooner Road between Quail and Old Fred Roads. Rains washed out the roadway underneath the old tin horn. Beard said the new tin horn is 120 feet long and 42 inches in diameter.

Holy City Prepares for Annual Passion Play

The Holy City of the Wichitas is preparing for its annual Easter pageant. The 66-acre park just north of Lawton has served as host for a live performance of the Resurrection of Christ every year since 1926. Skip Hamill is director of the board of trustees for the Holy City.

Rev. Charles Watson of Chickasha has been part of the Passion Play every year for the last 40-plus years and will be part of the cast again this year. They are looking for volunteers to be part of the pageant. Panel Looks to Stop Opioid Crisis in Oklahoma

A state panel created in 2017 is working to help Oklahomans who are victims of the national epidemic of opioid addiction. The Oklahoma Commission on Opioid Abuse has been working with many groups to try and end the crisis in the Sooner State. Under the guidance of Attorney General Mike Hunter, the group has teamed up with doctors, law enforcement, treatment and addiction specialists, business leaders, and state lawmakers to study the impact of opioid addiction in Oklahoma. Last year, seven bills recommended by the group were signed in to law. A press release from the attorney general indicates that the new laws should help to prevent future addicts. That includes limiting initial prescriptions for patients with acute pain, preventing the diversion of opioid prescriptions from flooding the market, and holding distributors, manufacturers, and businesses accountable through oversight.

Lawton-Ft. Sill VA Clinic Expands

Some new services are available to help the thousands of military veterans in the region. The Lawton-Ft. Sill Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic recently held a grand opening to show off an addition to the center. The Oklahoma City VA Health Care System oversees the Lawton-Ft. Sill clinic. Stacy Rine is the Public Affairs Officer for the Oklahoma City group. Rine says the Lawton-Ft. Sill clinic is adding a lot of specialty care options which includes physical therapy, occupational therapy, prosthetics, a women's clinic, vision and hearing treatment, and expanded tele-health services.

Kiowa Pulitzer-Prize Winning Author Earns Another Honor

A prominent Kiowa author receives recognition from a high-profile film maker. Dr. N. Scott Momaday will be awarded this year's Ken Burns American Heritage prize. Momaday is a prolific author and poet. He won a Pultizer Prize in fiction for his 1969 novel "House Made of Dawn." Momaday is credited with writing the first major work of the Native American Renaissance. Momaday was among the first members to be inducted into the National Native American Hall of Fame last year. Momaday will receive the Ken Burns award later this spring, which will include remarks from Burns and Academy Award winning actress Meryl Streep,

Farm Bill Update Set Monday

Looking ahead to Monday, agriculture producers can get an update on the new farm bill. A joint meeting of the Grady County Cattle Women and the local ag marketing program will be held Monday evening. Shianne Burns with Grady County OSU Extension says state ag marketing specialists will be on hand to provide important information. The program will be at 6:00 p.m. Monday at the Grady County Extension Office.

Error Results in $2 Million Underpayment to Chix Schools

The Chickasha Public School district is expected to get more than $2 million in ad valorem taxes owed to the district, after an error was found in the Grady County Treasurer's Office. Superintendent Jack Herron said officials became concerned when the ad valorem tax receipts last fall were much lower than anticipated. In a press release, Herron said assistant superintendent Jennifer Stegman went to the treasurer's office to look for answers this week. It was determined that an error caused nearly $2.2 million meant for Chickasha schools to go to the county instead. Herron said that County Treasurer Robin Burton has apologized for the mistake. Burton is expected to meet with County Commissioners on Monday and deliver the check to the school district Monday afternoon. School board President Doug Brown said it is alarming that an error of this magnitude could be made and go un-noticed for several months. Brown said the county's decision to immediately acknowledge the error and promise to get the district paid is the right step. Brown also said paying the interest on the funds the county retained for the last three months would be another step in the right direction.

Jan. Construction in Chickasha Down from Previous Years

A number of permits for new construction in Chickasha were approved in January, but the combined dollar value of the new projects is down. 21 permits for commercial and residential projects were approved by the city’s community development department last month for a total of just under $410,000. That's way down from the January totals of both 2018 and 2017, when building permits were around $3 million. Topping the January projects in the commercial sector was a $150,000 permit for the Tropical Cafe, which will be locating in the Shoppes at Chisholm Trail, near the Cotton Patch Cafe. A $50,000 permit was issued to Enable Midstream to remodel a 4,500 sq. ft. building in the 4300 block of South 4th Street, near the District 2 Grady County barn. A $4,000 remodel permit was awarded to Maria's Mexican Kitchen in downtown Chickasha for a new awning. Absent from the building report were new single family homes. Among the residential projects approved were the installation of storm shelters for nine homes.

History of African-American Farmers to be Celebrated

There’s an opportunity to learn about the history of Grady County agriculture this weekend. Loretta Jackson's annual fund raiser for her African-American Historical Society will focus on the early days of African-American land-owners and farmers. One family started their farm by purchasing 10 acres for $10 back in 1921. The evening includes a banquet and a night of story-telling. It will be held in the USAO Ballroom Saturday, Feb. 9th beginning at 6:30 p.m. The program is sponsored in part by the State Department of Tourism.

Two Chix City Council Reps Challenged in Re-election Bids

Some additional candidates came forward in the final day of filing for the spring Chickasha city council election Wednesday. Two candidates are unopposed while two incumbents will be facing challenges in their re-election bids. In Ward 2, current councilman Kim Loggins is being challenged by George Hector. In Ward 4, current councilman Jim Hopkins has two opponents, Kelly Boyd and Devin Gagliardo. There is a two-day protest and withdrawal period before the elections will be set. Two current councilmen, both of whom were appointed to their seats within the last few months, ran un-opposed. Tom Rose will serve in Ward 1 and Oscar Nelson will serve in Ward 3. Both will serve two-year terms.

Anadarko Mayor Draws Opponent in Re-Election Bid

Cel Phone Found Under Store Changing-Room Door

An uncomfortable situation discovered at a Chickasha thrift store. A customer found a cel phone believed to have been slipped underneath the door of a changing room at the Goodwill Store. According a Facebook post from Goodwill Industries of Southwest Oklahoma and North Texas, the customer reported the incident to management. Officials reviewed video surveillance which showed a male suspect shopping in the store who may have placed the phone there. There was also surveillance of what may have been his pick-up in the parking lot. Chickasha police say a report was made of the incident.

Man Charged with Trying to Burn Down Ex's Home

A Ninnekah man is arrested for allegedly trying to burn down his ex-girlfriend's home. 43-year old Joseph Brian Delk is accused of setting a pile of trash on fire and kicking next to the woman's home. Court documents say the incident happened in the Pioneer area in December. A warrant was issued for Delk's arrest, and he was taken into custody earlier this week. Delk has been formally charged with felony fourth-degree arson, and he remains in jail in lieu of a $50,000 bond.

Ampo Voters to Decide on Bonds for School Construction

Voters in the Amber-Pocasset school district will go to the polls next week to decide if new high school and junior high classrooms should be built. It's a $23.4 million bond issue that will also include upgrades to the elementary school in Pocasset and security improvements at both locations. Superintendent Jerime Parker-

Parker said the work would be done in phases if the bonds are approved. It's a 17-year bond issue, and property taxes would increase 8 percent if the measure is approved. The special bond election is next Tuesday.

In-Person, Absentee Voting Begins

By the way, early voting can be done today and tomorrow in the Ampo special school bond election as well as a special bond election in the Lindsay school district. There are also a number of school board elections to be decided, including Chickasha, Ninnekah, Dibble, and Newcastle. Early voters can cast ballots at their county election board offices until 6 p.m. today or 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. tomorrow.

Longtime Chickasha Minister Dies

Rev. Raymond McDowell has died. Rev. McDowell spent several years at College Heights Baptist Church in Chickasha. He was 82 when he passed away Feb. 3^rd. His funeral will be at Chisholm Heights Baptist Church in Mustang at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 8^th. Memorial contributions may be made to the Adam Residence Fund in care of the Baptist Foundation of Oklahoma.

Morning Earthquake Rattles Chickasha Area

An earthquake shakes the Chickasha region this morning. The U.S. Geological Survey indicates a 2.7 magnitude tremor was registered about 7:21 a.m. The epicenter of the temblor was about six miles northeast of Chickasha and was about three miles below the earth's surface. We received one call here at the station about the earthquake. There have been no reports of damage. If you felt the tremor you're asked to let the Oklahoma Geological Survey and the U.S. Geological Survey know what you experienced.

OSBI Offers Reward for Info in Chickasha Man's Death

Two teenagers wanted for last week's shooting death of 18-year old Trey Adams are still eluding authorities. Now, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is offering a $5,000 reward for information that helps put them behind bars. 16-year old Dmillion "NinePoint" Williams and 18-year old Malcolm "HighLife" Jackson are being sought for their roles in Adams’ death. Four other teenage suspects are already in custody. Investigators say Williams and Jackson hid in the bed of a pickup as all six teens went to Adams’ home to make a drug deal, then shot him just outside his home. Anyone with information regarding Williams or Jackson should call the OSBI, 1-800-522-8017. Authorities say both teens should be considered armed and dangerous.

Second 2017 Homicide Suspect Pleads Guilty

A second defendant charged with the 2017 shooting death of a Chickasha man has pleaded guilty to murder. 21-year old Rico Lamar Doss pleaded guilty to the charge in Grady County District Court last week. He was implicated in the shooting death of Dan Beall, at Beall's home in August of 2017. A judged sentenced Doss to 20 years in prison. A second defendant, Steven Lail, Jr. of Blanchard, also pleaded guilty to Beall's death last month and he was sentenced to life in prison.

City Council Filings Unchanged in Chickasha, Anadarko

There are still only three candidates who are formally running for spots on the Chickasha City Council in the upcoming election. There were no new candidates to file at city hall yesterday. The only ones to file are Kimmie Loggins, who is running for re-election in Ward 2 and two candidates in Ward 4, including Devin Gagliardo and Kelly Boyd. There are four seats up for election, one in each of the city's four wards. Today is the final day of the filing period. Candidates file at city hall. In Anadarko, there were also no additional candidates to file for a seat on the council. Mayor Kyle Eastwood is running for re-election, and Patrick Redbird has filed for Ward 2.

Chix School Board Candidate Hopes to Make Improvements

We're wrapping up our series today regarding the three candidates running for Chickasha school board. Laurie Allen has long been a supporter of the district, volunteering while her children were in school, serving as a substitute teacher, and she has served on the board of trustees for the public school foundation. Allen said a disturbing trend was discussed in last month's school board meeting, regarding a college remediation report.

Allen says she'll work with teachers, administrators, and the community to reverse that trend. Challenging Allen for a spot on the board of education are Tim Miller and Bruce Storms. The election is next Tuesday, with early voting tomorrow and Friday at the Grady County Election Board.

Chix Neighborhood to be Without Water This Morning

A reminder that a Chickasha neighborhood will be without water for a few hours this morning. This is southwest of 16th and Country Club Road. The area between Fieldcrest Drive and Sheridan Place will have no water between 9 a.m. and noon today, as crews replace a master water meter.

CHS Alum to Attend Leadership Academy

A Chickasha high school graduate has earned a top honor at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Jaycie Brown was awarded a spot with the George and Donna Nigh Leadership Academy. Brown was among Southwestern's 2017-18 President's Leadership Class, and will be among 24 students taking part in the leadership academy this month. This is the 20th year for the Nigh Leadership Academy, named for the former Oklahoma governor and his wife. Jaycie is the daughter of Yohance and Jolinda Brown.

Three Candidates File for Chickasha City Council

Only three candidates filed paperwork to run for Chickasha City Council on Monday, the first day of a three-day filing period. The only incumbent to file was Ward 2 councilman Kimmie Loggins. Two candidates filed to run for Ward 4. They are Kelly Boyd and Deven Gagliardo. There were no filings in Wards One or Three. The filing period runs through tomorrow. Candidates can file at city hall and there is a $25 filing fee.

'Darko Mayor runs for Re-Election; One Files for Seat 2

In Anadarko, Mayor Kyle Eastwood has filed for re-election, with no challengers coming forward on Day One. Also in Anadarko, Patrick Redbird has filed for the Ward 2 city council seat.

Two Hospitalized Following Crash with Semi

Two people are hospitalized in a crash involving three vehicles, including a semi, east of Lindsay. The accident happened about 8:30 a.m. Monday on State Highway 19. The Highway Patrol reports a pickup driven by 27-year old Adam Gregory of Blanchard went left-of-center and hit an on-coming semi driven by 63-year old Harry Jacobs of Fletcher. Debris from the semi struck a third vehicle driven by 35-year old Jeffrey Grisham of Sulphur, who sources tell us was headed to work at the John Holt Auto Group when the accident happened. Both Jacobs and Grisham were taken to an Oklahoma City hospital where they were admitted in stable condition with head injuries. Gregory was not hurt.

Arrest Made in Machete Attack

A machete-wielding man is arrested following an attack at a Grady County home. 67-year old Ernie Lee Norman was taken into custody following the attack on Saturday. A deputy sheriff's affidavit alleges the attack was un-provoked. The victim managed to hide in a bedroom until Norman left. The victim suffered a cut on his hand and was able to drive himself to the hospital, where his injury required stitches. It wasn't clear where Norman was arrested. He was formally charged with a felony count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Norman remains in jail in lieu of a $50,000 bond.

Tort Claims Denied by Chickasha City Council

A couple of tort claims filed against the City of Chickasha were denied by the city council last night. Monnie Hughes wants the city to pay for damage done to his home when a water line broke, flooded his home, and washed out the foundation. Pat Fraser wants the city to pay for more than $700 in damages done to her car when she hit a pothole. The city's insurance carrier recommended the council deny the claims. The council also waived competitive bidding and approved the purchase of some equipment for park maintenance from state contract with local company Standridge Equipment. Approved for purchase were three riding lawn mowers at a total coast of some $28,000 and a heavy-duty flail mower for $5,000.

Former Chix School Board Member Hopes to Return

A former member of the Chickasha Board of Education wants to return to the panel. Dr. Bruce Storms previously spent about 12 years on the school board. It's been six years since he's served. Storms says he helped the district get through some turmoil when he first served in the early 2000s. He says transparency is important, and that means getting the community involved, including when it comes to what teachers are teaching.

Storms is one of three candidates for Office No. 2 for the Chickasha school board. Laurie Allen and Tim Miller are also candidates. The school election is one week from today.

Voting Precinct to Change

By the way, there is a precinct change for voters who used to cast ballots at the Aggreko Cooling Tower rental company east of Chickasha. That is Precinct No. 11, and the Grady County Election Board says the new venue will be Grand Assembly of God at 102 East Almar. This will be a permanent change, starting with the school board election next Tuesday.

Two Homicide Suspects Still on the Run

It was one week ago today that 18-year old Trey Adams was shot to death outside his Chickasha home. While Adams’ funeral is this afternoon authorities are still looking for two men wanted in connection with Adam's death. Dmillion Williams and Malcolm Jackson are still at large, and should be considered armed and dangerous. Four others are already in custody alleged to have conspired to kill Adams and all are charged with murder. Adams funeral will be at 2 o'clock this afternoon at Ferguson Funeral Home.

Filing Period Begins for Chickasha City Council Election

The filing period is underway for the spring Chickasha City Council election. For posts are up for election, including Tom Rose in Ward 1; Kimmie Loggins in Ward 2; Oscar Nelson in Ward 3; and Jim Hopkins in Ward 4. The filing period runs through Wednesday. Candidates will file at city hall. There is a $25 filing fee. The city council election will be held in April.

Council to Review Traffic Signal Management System

The council meets for one of its two regular meetings in February tonight. Among the issues to be reviewed is an agreement with a firm for a traffic signal central management system. The proposal calls for $30,000 in city funds to be paid to a company called Signal System Management of Oklahoma City. Hardware is currently being installed at a number of intersections along 4th Street, as officials work to improve traffic flow along that corridor. Other measures to be considered include waiving fees for several local youth sports groups to use the city's sports complex. The council is also to recognize Steven Adams with the Public Works Department as the city's employee of the month. The council meets at 6:30 tonight at City Hall.

Chickasha Neighborhood to be Without Water Wed. Morning

A portion of Chickasha will be without water for a few hours on Wednesday. Crews will be changing a master water meter in the south part of the city. This will impact the area between Fieldcrest Drive and Sheridan Place southwest of 16^th and Country Club Road. Officials say there will be no water from about 9:00 a.m to noon.

Chickasha School Board Election is One Week Away

Three candidates are on the ballot in next week's Chickasha school board election. We'll be featuring each of the candidates during our news this week. One of the candidates is Tim Miller, a lifelong Chickasha resident who wants to give back to his community. Miller, a former employee of the school district, says the safety of the children is among his top priorities. He says he discovered an unnerving situation one day while working for the district.

Miller will face Laurie Allen and Bruce Storms in next week's election. Early voting is available this Thursday and Friday at the Grady County Election Board.

Suspect Faces Rape, Child Porn Charges

Here's a KOOL News follow-up to a story we first brought you earlier this week. Rush Springs police made an arrest in connection with a child pornography investigation, and prosecutors have filed formal charges against the suspect. On-line court records indicate that 23-year old Elijah Payne Higgins was arraigned in Grady County District Court on Friday on felony charges of rape and producing and distributing child porn. Higgins was arrested last Sunday evening. No details are available on what led to Higgins arrest. A judge set Higgins’ bond at $150,000 and he remains in jail. He's to announce his attorney later this month, with a preliminary hearing conference scheduled March 6th.

Hate Crime Alleged at Home for Special Needs Adults

A Chickasha man faces allegations of a hate crime, following a confrontation at a home for special needs adults. Grady County court documents indicate he used a racial slur and threatened to seriously injure a staff member. A Grady County deputy was summoned to the Sequoyah House near Amber Tuesday evening. The man was brandishing a fire extinguisher when the deputy arrived. The deputy's affidavit indicates that when he asked the suspect what was wrong, he said he did not like one of the staff members because she was black. Its alleged the man called her the "N" word, threatened to cut her throat, strangle her, and burn her using a lighter and an aerosol can. The victim was not hurt, and told the deputy she was used to the abuse. In custody is 28-year old Jeremiah John Paul Marshall. He's been charged with felony counts of conspiring to perform a violent act and attempted arson. His bond is $50,000. It's not clear if Marshall is a resident of the Sequoyah House.

Ninnekah Police Seek Home Break-in Suspects

Ninnekah police are looking for three suspects in connection with a break-in of a home. According to the department's Facebook page, the break-in took place early Tuesday morning, Jan. 29th. Several credit cards were taken and later used in Chickasha. Authorities have posted pictures of two of the suspects and an extended cab pick-up taken from video surveillance on the department's Facebook page. Photos of the third suspect may be posted later. Police are asking anyone with information to contact Ninnekah authorities by calling 405-222-0882 or Grady County Crimestoppers at 405-224-TIPS.

Pauline Spangler, Wife of WWII Vet Gordon Spangler, Passes

Pauline Spangler has died. The wife of decorated WW II veteran Gordon Spangler passed away yesterday at 98 years old. Born in Minco in 1920, she worked for the City of Chickasha as a young woman, serving as secretary to the mayor and as city clerk. She worked at Borden General Hospital during WWII while Gordon was in the 45^th Division. She then worked at the Chickasha Hospital and Clinic where she became an accredited records technician. She started working at Grady Memorial before it opened and worked as a registered records administrator, who was responsible for several hospitals in the region. Gordon and Pauline were active square dancers traveling to several countries. She was inducted into the USAO Hall of Fame last year. Survivors include her husband Gordon; daughter Gordona Snow; Daughter Mandy Keller and husband Richard and their families. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. next Saturday, Feb. 9th at Epworth Methodist Church with burial at the Friendship Cemetery in Pocasset. Arrangements are with McRay Funeral Home.

Annual Swine Show Set for Grady County Fairgrounds

There's another big livestock show going on at the Grady County Fairgrounds this weekend. It's the Team Purebred swine show, with about 130 youth from 12 states exhibiting their animals. Dakota Moyers with the non-profit group expects about 400 hogs to be shown. The youth are competing for $150 awarded to each breed champion, as well as grand champion prizes and a one-year lease of a stock trailer. This spring show has been held in Chickasha the last four or five years, held the first weekend in February. A similar show is held every fall in Duncan. Team Purebred holds similar shows in Mississippi, Iowa, and Maryland. The two-day show starts at noon today. Admission is free for those who want to watch the show.

Investigator Says Teens Conspired Deadly Crime

As the family of Trey Adams plans his funeral, some startling news from investigators about the teenagers arrested in connection with his death. In a news conference yesterday, OSBI Special Agent Lynn Williams told reporters-

Williams said it was all set up through the social media app, Snap Chat. The teens conspired at an Oklahoma City motel to meet with Adams to buy some marijuana. When they arrived in Chickasha two teens climbed in the back of the pickup. When Adams came out of his house and approached the pickup, the teen identified as Dmillion Williams is alleged to have jumped up and opened fire, shooting Adams three times. Williams, who goes by the nickname of NinePoint, and Malcolm Jackson who goes by Highlife, are still on the run. They are considered armed and dangerous. Four teens are in custody on murder complaints. They are Troy Jennings, Brooklyn Nelson, Vivian Sanders, and Montana Simpkins. All from the Oklahoma City area.

Trey Adams Funeral is Monday

In the meantime, the funeral for Trey Adams will be on Monday. Adams just turned 18 the day after Christmas. Family members say he was a happy-go-lucky person with a contagious smile. The service will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday at Ferguson Funeral home, with burial in the Alex Cemetery.

Warrant Issued in Hammer Attack

Caddo County authorities are looking for an Anadarko man accused of beating a man in the head with a hammer. An arrest warrant was issued for 31-year old John Edgar Topaum. The attack occurred before dawn Wednesday morning. The condition of the victim is not known. The warrant is for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, after former conviction of a felony. On-line records show that Topaum pleaded guilty to previous felony and misdemeanor drug and assault charges dating back to 2013. If convicted on this most recent charge, he could be sentenced to 10 years to life in prison.

Groundhog Pancakes with Optimists

The Chickasha Optimist Club is hosting its annual Groundhog Day Pancake Day today. It’s all-you-can-eat pancakes and sausage plus coffee, juice, and milk. Tickets are $5 with kids five-and-under, free. Pancake Day runs until 1:00 this afternoon at First Baptist Church at 4^th and Colorado.

Arrests Made, Two Sought in Connection With Chix Homicide

Four teenagers are behind bars and authorities are looking for two armed and dangerous teens in connected with the shooting death of a Chickasha man. Trey Adams, also a teenager at just 18-years old, was shot and killed just outside his Chickasha home early Monday. The OSBI says in custody is 19-year old Troy Jennings of McLoud; 16-year old Brooklyn Nelson of Oklahoma City; and 15-year old Vivian Sanders of Newalla, all of whom were booked into the Grady County Jail. Also arrested was 15-year-old Montana Simpson of Norman who was booked into the Caddo County Jail in Anadarko. All are being held on complaints of first-degree murder. Two other suspects are being sought. They are 18-year old Dmillion Williams, also known as NinePoint, and 18-year old Malcolm Jackson, also known as Highlife. Investigators say both should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information is asked to contact the OSBI by calling 800-522-8017 or local police. You can also call the Grady County Crimestoppers at 405-224-TIPS.

'Inappropriate Communication' Alleged in Chix School

An employee of Chickasha Public Schools is accused of having inappropriate communication with a female student. RANCH News has obtained a copy of letter to parents believed to have originated from Superintendent Jack Herron and Middle School Principal Debbie Davis. The letter states that the employee has been removed from the school pending a full investigation. Chickasha police were notified and the letter states that school officials are cooperating fully with local law enforcement. The name of the accused employee was not disclosed. It wasn’t clear if the employee has been arrested. The also states that the safety and security of students is among the district’s highest priorities. The letter asked parents to contact administrators if they feel their children have had inappropriate communications with any school employee.

Crash Victim Trapped For Hours Before Being Freed

A Grady County man is hospitalized after being trapped in his pickup for 3 ½ hours after he ran off the road, hit a tree, and overturned. 27-year old Tyler Hicks of Alex suffered head, arm, leg, and internal injuries. A passer-by discovered the crash and called it in. Alex and Chickasha firefighters used the Jaws of Life to get Hicks out of the truck. Hicks was air-lifted to an Oklahoma City hospital where he was last in good condition. The accident happened about 11:00 a.m. Wednesday just north of Alex. The trooper investigating the crash said Hicks blacked out before running off the road.

Woman Faces Dog-Napping Charge

A dog-napping investigation leads to an arrest and a misdemeanor charge filed against a Chickasha woman. Chickasha police were called to a home last month where a woman said her long-haired dachshund had been stolen. The dog was later found wandering in to Grady Memorial Hospital, where a woman waiting on a patient asked to hold the dog. The woman wrapped up the dog in a blanket and took it with her. Police reviewed the hospital surveillance video and recognized the woman. During an interview, she told police she was going to put the dog’s picture on Facebook to try to find the owner. However, she told police the dog had run away. A few days later, the dog's owner got a message from someone saying that they had her dog, and they would give it back to her if she wouldn’t get police involved. The owner said OK, but called police anyway. Police arrested 55-year old Margaret Diane Chaney and she is charged with larceny of animals. She's out of jail after posting bond. The case has been placed on the March 8th misdemeanor docket in Grady County District Court.

School Board Candidate Meet-and-Greet Set

A forum for Chickasha residents to meet all the candidates running for school board is scheduled for next week. There are three candidates running for Office No. 2. They are Bruce Storms, Laurie Allen and Tim Miller. Two other candidates who ran un-opposed for school board posts, Cara Gerdes and Robyn Morse, are also expected to attend. This is a come-and-go event, and each candidate will have time to discuss their platforms. The forum will be Tuesday, Feb. 5th, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Canadian Valley Technology Center. The school board election is the following week, Tuesday, Feb. 12th.

Regional Food Bank Schedules Chickasha Stop

The Regional Food Bank will be in Chickasha today to provide food boxes for local federal government employees affected by the recent government shutdown. That will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. this afternoon and evening at the Grady County Fairgrounds. Individuals will have to show their federal identification.

Lawton Murder Suspect Arrested Near Cyril

A state trooper arrests a Lawton murder suspect in Cyril. Johnny Ray Jones was being sought in connection with a homicide that took place in Lawton early Tuesday morning. KSWO-TV reports that a woman called 911 and told police that a man shot her boyfriend and her brother. The woman's boyfriend, 32-year old Joshua Seavert, later died at the hospital. Her brother was also hospitalized, however his condition unknown. Jones’ hometown was not immediately known. He had two outstanding misdemeanor warrants out of Comanche County after Lawton police arrested him just last month for drug possession and reckless handling of a firearm.

Pursuit Lands Missouri Man in Jail

A Missouri man is arrested and charged with felony for trying to elude a state trooper near Amber. 27-year old Albert Gingerich remains in the Grady County Jail on a $25,000 bond. A probable cause affidavit from the trooper indicates he was on routine patrol east of Amber last Friday, when his radar indicated the driver of a pick-up was speeding. The driver failed to pull over, and speeds reached near 80 miles per hour on a gravel county road. The trooper said the driver put other motorists at risk during the chase. The driver finally pulled over where he was taken into custody without incident. The affidavit also indicates Gingerich has a loaded 9mm in the pickup, but he did have a valid conceal and carry permit out of Missouri.

Continental President Says SpringBoard Just Getting Started

Continental Resources officials say the company's SpringBoard project in the SCOOP should continue to do well into 2019. In a conference call with investors, Continental president Jack Stark anticipates oil production will increase 10 percent between the third quarters of 2018 and 2019. The website www.okenergytoday.com quotes Stark as saying the geology of the SpringBoard is well-defined based on the available data, and that the current locations are prolific flowing wells. The company has completed 18 of 335 wells it plans to drill in the region. Stark said the average daily initial production of each well is nearly 1,300 barrels of oil-equivalent, which is in-line with what officials expected.

Leading State Democrat Blasts Governor's Education Move

State Rep. David Perryman (D-Chickasha) is criticizing Gov. Kevin Stitt's plan to combine the duties of the governor's education adviser with those of the Secretary of State. Perryman is the Minority Floor Leader in the State House of Representatives. In a prepared statement, Perryman said that if the governor intends to focus on education, he should provide additional resources, rather than decrease the amount of time his adviser will have to help solve problems facing the state's education system. Perryman says more voices with public education experience are needed at the table, not less. While Perryman says he respects Secretary of State Michael Rogers, his background is in private education. Perryman said he's concerned that fewer advocates for public education are among the governor's advisers.

Regional Food Bank Mobile Food Banks Open Today

The Regional Food Bank will be in Anadarko later today for the first of its mobile food banks to help federal government employees hurt by the recent government shutdown. Food boxes will be given to those with federal employment identification at the Anadarko High School from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. tonight. Pasta, cereal, peanut butter, fresh produce, frozen protein, canned vegetables and meat, and bread will be available. A similar mobile food bank will be in Chickasha tomorrow at the Grady County Fairgrounds, also from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Library Friends Prepare for Chocolate Celebration

With Valentine’s Day just a couple of weeks away, the Friends of the Chickasha Public Library are preparing for their annual Chocolate Celebration. This 7th annual celebration will again benefit the library and its many programs and needs. Individuals will be able to choose from nearly 4,000 servings of chocolate. Participating groups are asked to prepare at least 200 servings of chocolate goodies. Tickets are $6 per person and allows holders to pick six servings. There will be a lot of bake-sale type items at the celebration as well. The chocolate celebration is Tuesday, Feb. 12^th from 5-7 p.m. at Epworth Methodist Church.

Chickasha Homicide Investigation Continues

There have been no new developments reported in the investigation of the shooting death of a young Chickasha man. 18-year old Trey Adams was found shot to death just outside his home early Monday morning. Adams’ girlfriend discovered his body. Adams had attended Chickasha and Alex schools over the last few years. He was about to be a father, as his girlfriend is expecting their child this summer. Authorities are asking anyone with information to send an e-mail to tips@osbi.ok.gov

Man Pleads Guilty to 2017 Chickasha Murder

A man charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of Chickasha man two years ago has pleaded guilty. 30-year old Steven Levon Lail, Jr. of Blanchard was to go on trial in Grady County District Court this week. Instead, he entered the guilty plea last Friday. Lail was one of two men arrested in connection with the shooting death of Dan Beall, III at his home in the 400 block of East Ada Sipuel in August of 2017. Lail's sentencing is scheduled for this Friday afternoon. The second man, 32-year old Rico Lamar Doss of Chickasha, is also charged with murder in connection with Beall's death. Doss may enter a plea next week.

Deputies Find Lots of Stolen Equipment, Vehicles

Grady County authorities say they have recovered thousands upon thousands of dollars in stolen equipment and machinery taken in recent thefts from several counties. Grady County Undersheriff Phil Blevins said the equipment was found after a search warrant was issued for property south of Winter Creek Golf and Country Club. Blevins says the stolen equipment is worth at least $250,000. That includes a $100,000 sky-lift. The equipment had been taken from locations in Grady, Garvin, McClain, Oklahoma, and Kingfisher counties. Most of the equipment has been returned to the rightful owners. Blevins had hoped to find some equipment recently stolen from a Bridge Creek home, but unfortunately none of that equipment was at this location. Blevins said they continue looking for suspects in connection with both of these investigations.

Regional Food Bank to Help Federal Employees

Federal employees who were off work for a month because of the partial government shutdown are back at work now, at least through Feb. 15th. The workers aren't expected to get their back pay until later this week. Many groups are still reaching out to help the families who have gone without a paycheck since Christmas. Those groups include the Regional Food Bank. The agency will have mobile food distribution sites in Chickasha and Anadarko later this week to help. They'll receive a variety of foods to include cereal, peanut butter, canned vegetables and meat, fresh produce, pasta, and bread. In Anadarko, the distribution will be tomorrow (Wednesday, Jan. 30^th) from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Anadarko High School. In Chickasha, the distribution will be Thursday (January 31^st) from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Grady County Fairgrounds. Individuals will have to show their federal identification in order to receive assistance.

ODOT Projects to Affect Chickasha, Blanchard Traffic

Some highway projects by State Department of Transportation contractors will affect traffic in Chickasha and Blanchard. In Chickasha, contractors will be making upgrades to the west viaduct on U.S. Highway 62 near 16th Street. Traffic will be down to one lane in each direction for a bridge rehabilitation project. That will be a lengthy project, lasting perhaps until August or September. In Blanchard, traffic on State Highway 76 will be affected by a couple of guardrail projects on Thursday, Jan. 31^st only. The first is between Highway 74B and 280^th Street from 10:00 a.m. to 1 p.m, and the second is from Stone Road to the H.E. Bailey Turnpike from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. Traffic will be down to one lane on both projects and flaggers will be on site. ODOT recommends that motorists find alternate routes or face lengthy delays.

Body Found Near Downtown Chickasha Restaurant

A Chickasha-area teen has died as the result of a gunshout would to the chest. The OSBI and Chickasha police identify the victim as Arnold "Trey" Adams. Authorities are trying to determine a motive and find any suspects)

Investigators are at the scene of a body discovered near the Dairy Queen restaurant in downtown Chickasha early this morning. Police were dispatched to the area about 3:40 this morning. KOOL-RANCH News was on the scene where the body of a fully-clothed unidentified male was lying in a grassy area behind the former Murphy's Liquor Store and Line Creek. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to help with the investigation. No details are being released as the investigation is just getting underway.

Rush Springs Police Make Arrest in Child Porn Investigation

A child porn investigation in Rush Springs has one man behind bars this morning. A 23-year old man is jailed on complaints which include soliciting sex with a minor by technology, possession of child porn, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute. We won't release the name of the suspect unless prosecutors file formal charges against him.

Traffic Stop in Blanchard Finds Pot, Weapons

In Blanchard, police find more than 100 grams of pot following a traffic stop. On its Facebook page, authorities posted a photograph of the marijuana, two handguns, and scales seized from the vehicle following the stop. The post wasn't specific about why the traffic stop was made, only that it took place early Sunday morning. The post indicates the driver was arrested on a number of complaints, and a passenger was also taken into custody for outstanding warrants.

Jury Duty Canceled This Week, But it's On for Next

If you received a letter to report for jury duty in Grady County District Court this morning, you're excused. All the cases that were set to go to trial this week have been resolved, so no juries are needed this week. However, if you received a Grady County jury duty notice for NEXT week, starting Feb. 4th, you will have to report.

Cheniere Energy to Pay Dividends

In energy news, the company wanting to build a 200-mile natural gas pipeline through the region has declared a cash dividend for its shareholders. Cheniere Energy Partners will pay out 59 cents a share which is part of an annualized distribution of $2.36 per share. The payment will be made to shareholders of record as of Feb. 6th, with the payments to be made Feb. 14th. Cheniere will build the pipeline from Kingfisher, through the STACK and SCOOP plays to the Durant area. The pipeline will link up with one already in place which sends natural gas to the Gulf Coast, where it’s transformed to liquified natural gas and exported.

Grady County Basketball Tournament Results

Minco boys and Amber-Pocasset girls win championships at the 101^st Grady County High School Basketball tournament over the weekend. Minco boys (No. 4 in Class 2A) defeated unranked Amber-Pocasset, 64-51. Sophomore Cooper Shirley led Minco with 23 points, while another sophomore, Nick Burchfield had 13 points. Ampo managed to hold 6-7 Minco senior Dayken Rackley to 13 points. Ampo’s big post player, 6-5 junior, Skylar Croskey, led the Panthers with 18 points, while senior Kale Kennedy scored 12 points. Ampo girls (No. 11 in Class 2A) won their second straight tournament and 21^st overall with a 52-36 win over unranked Rush Springs. Ampo freshman Devynn Harris led all scorers with 19 points while sophomore Caton Muncy added 16. Rush Springs senior Bailey Beard had 10 points in the loss.

Caddo County Tournament Results

In the Caddo County Tournament, Cyril boys (No. 6 in Class A) defeated Carnegie (No. 9 in Class 2A), 72-49. Cyril defeated top-ranked Ft. Cobb-Broxton in the semi-finals, 61-57. In a top-10 match-up in the girls championship, Ft. Cobb-Broxton (No. 8 in Class A) kept Cyril (No. 4 in Class A) from winning its 4^th straight county title. Ft. Cobb-Broxton takes a 37-34 win.

Heart of Oklahoma Tournament Results

Anadarko girls (No. 5 in 4A) defeated Sulphur (No. 6 in 3A) 46-35 to win the Heart of Oklahoma tournament in Purcell. It was the first loss of the year for Sulphur. Anadarko boys (No. 4 in 4A) lost the boy’s title in Purcell to unranked Plainview, 56-48. Plainview improves to 11-5 with the win.
