Woman Critical After Car Collides with Semi

A car slams into a semi Saturday night sending an elderly Oklahoma City couple to the hospital with one in critical condition. 77-year old Caren Storck was air-lifted to an Oklahoma City hospital where she was last in critical condition. 76-year old Kenneth Storck was taken by ambulance to Oklahoma City where he was admitted in fair condition but has since been released. The accident happened about 9:00 p.m. Saturday about 10 miles east of Chickasha on U.S. 62 between Tabler and Blanchard. The highway patrol reports that the Storck vehicle was eastbound on Highway 62 when it struck a semi that was entering the highway from a private drive. The semi was driven by 21-year old Payden Miller of Chickasha. Miller was not injured. The accident closed the highway for five hours.

 

Sleepy Driver Crashes on Turnpike; Passenger Injured           

A tired driver crashes on the H.E. Bailey turnpike and sends a passenger in the car to the hospital. 26-year old Samatha Phanthanousy of Moore was taken to an Oklahoma City hospital where she is in serious condition this morning. The accident happened just before 2:30 p.m. Sunday near mile marker 77 about four miles southwest of Chickasha. The highway patrol reports that the driver of the car, 29-year old Dustin Quisenberry also of Moore, was eastbound on the turnpike when he ran off the highway and hit a culvert. Quisenberry was not injured.

 

Trial of Police Shootout Suspect Enters Second Week

The trial of a man accused of injuring several police officers during a shootout continues into its second week. Alex Warren Klinger is now facing 10 felony charges. He was originally facing 15 charges, however four were dismissed this past February and a fifth charge was dismissed as the trial started last Tuesday. The charges include shooting with intent to kill, assault and battery with a deadly weapon, and maiming. Klinger, 62, has been held in the Grady County Jail without bond since his arrest following the shootout which occurred in September of 2017.

 

Dowtown Chickasha Development Ideas Sought

Chickasha residents are being asked to put on their thinking caps and discuss what the downtown area might look like in the future. OU students with the Institute for Quality Communities will be in Chickasha tonight for a come-and-go meeting to discuss development ideas for downtown. Chickasha was one of just two communities selected to take part in the program this year. The meeting will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Grady County Fairgrounds Community Building.

 

CV Tech's Gay Pettit Up for National Award

A career guidance counselor with Canadian Valley Technology Center is a finalist for a national award. Gay Pettit is among five candidates for the honor which will be announced next month at the national meeting of the Association for Career and Technology Education. Pettit has been in education for nearly 35 years. She created CV Tech’s Mentor Match program, which allows career tech students to get on-the-job work experience with business and industry. The national meeting will be held in San Antonio Nov. 28th.

The price of crude oil on the NYMEX was down for the third straight week to $67.59 a barrel.

London-based Brent crude was down to $77.62.

Natural gas also had a down week to $3.18 per million BTUs.

Metals were up slightly for the week with gold up to $1,231 and silver to $14.65.

Florida Firm Expected to Create Anadarko Jobs

There's a lot of excitement in Anadarko, with the announcement that a revolutionary new product is expected to be manufactured there. Aqua Resources out of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida has signed a letter-of-intent to manufacture products that developers say will have a huge impact on the medical, oil and gas, and even the textile industries. Lee Madden is the CEO of Aqua Resources. He holds seven patents on dozens of products he has developed over the years.

 

               

 

Madden has been working with Theda McPheron-Keel, the CEO of the Wind Hollow Foundation, which owns the former Holleytex Plant in Anadarko. McPheron-Keel is herself a scientist and says the plant is perfect for Madden's work.

 

               

 

The groups will work with the City of Anadarko to obtain state and federal grants and low-interest loans for start-up businesses. It's expected to create about 40 new jobs. They hope to operational by the second half of 2019.

 

Woman Charged with Embezzlement

A Chickasha woman is accused of embezzling money from the cell phone company she used to work for. 29-year old Kera Danielle England was arrested by Chickasha police this week, and she has been formally charged with felony embezzlement. She remains in jail in lieu of a $5,000 bond. Court documents indicate England admitted taking the money when she worked as a manager for the company. A probable cause affidavit indicates she admitted taking more than $2,000 to pay bills after her husband lost his job. She told authorities she used the money to make car and loan payments, rent and utility bills, car insurance, and also purchased gas and cigarettes.

 

Man Sought for Trying to Run Over Relative

An Anadarko man is wanted for allegedly trying to run over a relative. A felony arrest warrant has been issued for 34-year old William Linn Tartsah. Anadarko police say he tried to run over his nephew. Documents filed in Caddo County District Court say the incident happened about six weeks ago. Tartsah is wanted for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison.

Double-Organ Transplant Recipient Doing Well

A Chickasha man is doing very well these days, after undergoing a rare double-organ transplant. This summer, Kyle Perry had a pancreas and kidney transplant at the Oklahoma Transplant Center, which is part of the OU Medical Center. Perry underwent the 10-hour surgery in August, and he says he healthier than he has been in years.

 

               

 

Perry learned he would need a transplant in December of 2016, and was surprised when he got the call that he would have the surgery just two months ago, after being on the transplant list for only a year and a half. Man Wanted for Assault in Custody

Now an update to a story we told you about earlier this week. Caddo County authorities have captured a man accused of kidnapping and assaulting his girlfriend. Caddo County Undersheriff Spencer Davis says deputies arrested 22-year old Michael Andrew Toahty of Cyril Wednesday night. It wasn't clear where authorities found him, but he was booked into the Caddo County jail about 7:00 p.m. that evening. Toahty was wanted for the alleged assault of the woman that occrred a couple of weeks ago.

 

More Details of Runaway Teen Released

We have a few more details about that missing teenage girl we told you about yesterday. 13-year old Jimi Lee Jorski was reported missing from her home in Cogar by her mother Wednesday morning. While she lived in Cogar, authorities say she was going to school in Minco. Jorski is Caucasian, about 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs between 130 to 150 pounds. She has shoulder-length brown hair and was last seen wearing blue jeans and a black-and-white checkered shirt. She may also be wearing an El Reno hoodie. If you know anything about Jimi Lee Jorski, you're asked to call the Caddo County Sheriff's Office at 405-247-5700 or local law enforcement.

 

Another Good SCOOP Well for Continental Resources

Another oil well for Continental Resources in the SCOOP region is doing very well. The Lyle 4-30-10 located between Marlow and Elmore City is bringing in about 1,200 barrels of oil equivalent and nearly 1,700 metric cubic feet of natural gas per day. The well is in Section 31 of Township 3 North Range 4 West. Spud date was March with drilling finished in May and completion in June.

 

 Two Inducted into 4H Hall of Fame              

The Grady County 4H Hall of Fame has two new members. Kale Kennedy of the Amber-Pocasset Senior 4H Club and Breanna Conrad of the Rocks 4H Club were inducted into the hall during the annual 4H achievement banquet last night. Kennedy is a senior at Ampo and is on the state officer team. He also was a state winner in his project for the conservation of natural resources. Conrad is a student at Oklahoma City Community College, and was a state 4H winner in achievement.

 

Rush Springs Student Wins Pageant

Royalty for a Rush Springs resident. Lexi Large was crowned Miss Northern Oklahoma College in Enid last night. She was among several young ladies competing at the dual Miss NOC and Miss NOC Tonkawa Scholarship competition. Lexi will now get to compete in the Miss Oklahoma Pageant next spring. Lexi is the daughter of Ricky and Jeanne Large

 

Contributions Sought for Shop-with-a-Cop

 A number of Chickasha elementary school students will get to go Christmas shopping with a police officer’s help. About 30 students from Bill Wallace and Grand Avenue schools will take part in the second annual Shop with A Cop program with the Chickasha Police Department. Each student will get about $250 to spend on themselves or others. Assistant Police Chief G.G. Music said they hope to collect about $5,000 in contributions from the community to help with the project. Last year, donors gave $7,000. Contributions should be with a check or a Wal-Mart gift card. The Shop with a Cop event will be held December 7^th.

Injured Officer Returns to Work a Year After Shooting

It's been just over a year since a Chickasha police officer suffered a serious arm injury in a shootout with a man who barricaded himself inside his home. After several surgeries and numerous physical therapy sessions, Sgt. Matt Schoolfield is back at work. Schoolfield is on light duty and is still undergoing physical therapy. Police Chief Greg Anderson says Schoolfied is happy to be back at work. Schoolfield is among the many witnesses testifying at this week's trial of Alex Warren Klingler, the man alleged to have opened fire on Schoolfield and several other law enforcement officers in September of 2017. Today is the third day of Klingler's trial in Grady County District Court. Prosecutors say the trial could run about a week.

 

Early-Morning Crash Closes Country Road

An early morning traffic accident shut down Grand Avenue west of Chickasha. The accident happened about a mile east of Lake Burtchi Road at County Road 2760. The highway patrol indicated it was a single-vehicle accident and there were no injuries. The accident happened about 2:45 a.m. and the roadway was closed about an hour and 15 minutes, re-opening about 4:00 a.m. Officials provided no information about the driver or any passengers.

                               

No Injuries Reported in Three-Vehicle Accident              

There was a three-vehicle accident south of Pocasset yesterday, but fortunately there were no serious injuries. The accident happened at U.S. Highway 81 and the Amber turn-off. Grady County Fire Department officials say no one was transported to any hospitals. It was raining at the time of the accident which happened about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.  Traffic on the highway was down to just one lane for about an hour. All three vehicles had to be towed away. State troopers, Grady County Sheriff's deputies, and the Pocasset Fire Department all responded. Neither the names of the drivers nor any passengers were released.

               

Accident Victims Still Hospitalized

We have updates on two men hospitalized after they were injured in separate traffic accidents. Gary Sanders of Verden remains in critical condition after a crash that occurred at U.S. Highway 62 and Lake Burtchi Road last Friday. Stephen Franks of Ninnekah has been upgraded to serious condition after being ejected from his pickup in a Monday night crash near Anadarko. He was running from police when that accident happened. Both men are being treated at OU Medical Center.

 

Runaway Caddo County Teen Sought               

Caddo County authorities are hoping you can help locate a runaway teenager. Our partners at KWTV News 9 report that officials are looking for 13-year old Jimi Lee Jorski. It wasn't reported what town she's missing from. Jorski is Caucasian, about 5 feet 6 inches tall, and weighs 130 to 150 pounds. A photo shows her with shoulder-length brown hair, and she was last seen wearing blue jeans and a black-and-white checkered shirt. She may also be wearing an El Reno hoodie. Authorities think she may be in El Reno or Oklahoma City. Silver Alert Canceled for Missing OKC Man

A Silver Alert issued for an elderly man who had been missing from his southwest Oklahoma City home has been canceled. The alert was issued Wednesday afternoon for 76-year old Ronald Starbuck. Oklahoma City Police canceled the Silver Alert this morning, saying that Starbuck had been found and is with family. There was no information about where Starbuck was located.

 

Groups Will Again Help Needy Families During Holidays               

Christmas decorations are already showing up in the stores and the big holiday is two months from today. There will be a lot of ways to help needy families during this special time of year. Among them is one that has been one of the area’s longest-running programs. The Salvation Army and Southwest Youth and Family Services are again combining efforts for the Angel to Angel program. The agencies have begun taking applications from families who could use some assistance, or from anyone who may know about under-privileged families. In Grady County, applications are available at the Salvation Army, which is located in Chickasha across from the Bill Wallace School. In Caddo County applications are available at Southwest Youth and Family Services in Anadarko.

Pursuit Suspect Critical After Crash

An ex-con who led police on a high-speed pursuit through two counties is hospitalized in critical condition, after crashing his pickup trying running a road block. 58-year old Stephen Dale Franks of Ninnekah was air-lifted to an Oklahoma City hospital with undisclosed injuries. Chickasha police say they tried to make a traffic stop on Franks near USAO at 19th and Park about 6:00 p.m. Monday. Franks sped away, and was said to have been driving on the wrong side of the road and forcing vehicles off the roadway. Authorities say the pursuit lasted about a half an hour, and that Franks ran several road blocks before crashing on a Caddo County road east of Anadarko. The initial report about the pursuit also indicated that Franks had a weapon. Police say Franks has active warrants out of both Grady and Caddo counties. Franks has a long criminal record, pleading guilty to burglary and previous charges of eluding and running a road block out of Grady County.

 

Verden Accident Victim Still Critical               

Now an update on a man critically injured in a violent traffic accident that claimed the lives of two people. 51-year old Gary Sanders of Verden remains in critical condition in an Oklahoma City hospital. The accident happened at U.S. Highway 62 and Lake Burtchi Road last Friday. Killed in the crash were Harold and Shirley Milsap, also of Verden. A joint funeral for the Milsaps will be held at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow morning at the Verden Pentecostal Lighthouse Church.

 

Lindsay Trucker Hospitalized After Hitting Tree

A Lindsay truck driver is hospitalized after his tractor-trailer ran off the road and hit a tree. Howard Cannon was air-lifted to an Oklahoma City hospital where he was admitted in fair condition with a leg injury. The accident happened just before 11:00 a.m. Tuesday on State Highway 29 east of Elmore City. The highway patrol reported that Cannon was inattentive when he approached a curve and ran off the road.

 

Arrest Warrant Issued for Cyril Man

Law enforcement officials are looking for a Cyril man wanted for allegedly kidnapping and choking his girlfriend. An arrest warrant has been issued for 22-year old Michael Andrew Toahty. The warrant was issued after the victim told investigators that Toahty forcibly held her in his car and choked her. The warrant is for felony kidnapping and domestic assault and battery by strangulation, and misdemeanor charges of domestic assault. Contact the Caddo County Sheriff's Office or local police if you have information on Toahty.

 

Oilfield Firm Hiring Truck Drivers

Truck drivers are in big demand in the oilfield industry, and a company serving the region for 20 years will be holding a hiring event tomorrow night. Advantage Oilfield Services is hiring CDL drivers for water transport trucks. Food and drinks will be provided. The hiring event is from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the Advantage Oilfield Services yard in Chickasha at 3910 S. 4th.

 

Florist to "Petal it Forward"

A Chickasha flower shop will be taking part in a national campaign today to surprise people with free flowers. Sue Kendall of Kendall's Flowers will be giving two bouquets of flowers to random people. One bouquet is for them to keep and the other to give to someone else. The promotion is called "Petal it Forward." Kendall says the day-long event is intended to lift people's spirits by delivering the power of flowers.

 

High School Artists May Enter USAO Competition

High school arts students are encouraged to enter the annual Innovations art contest at USAO. The competition is for juniors and seniors and all media are welcome. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners. Entries cannot be larger than four feet in any direction. Students can enter up to five projects and there is $3 fee for each entry. The art work is due Feb. 27th and will be judged by university art faculty. The project will be part of an exhibition for the first couple of weeks in March. Jury Selection Underway in Trial for Police Shootout Suspect

It's day two of jury selection in the trial of Alex Warren Klinger, the man alleged to have been involved in a shootout with Chickasha police last year. Klingler was initially charged with 15 felonies following the shootout in which three police officers were injured. Prosecutors dropped four of the charges this past spring. Klinger is now facing three charges of assault and battery with a deadly weapon; seven counts of shooting with intent to kill; and one count of maiming. The shootout occurred at Klingler's home in September of last year. Authorities say he barricaded himself inside his home and fired numerous times at law enforcement over a 2 1/2 hour period. One officer, Sgt. Matthew Schoolfield, remains on medical leave after suffering a serious arm injury.            

 

Congressman Says Mid-Term Elections Too Close to Call

4th District Oklahoma Congressman Tom Cole spent some time in Chickasha yesterday meeting with business leaders and the media. Cole says despite the controversies surrounding President Trump, Congress has had one of the most productive periods in 20 years. That includes passing the largest defense bill and the largest domestic spending bill on time. The Norman Republican thinks that Democrats could gain a few seats in the House in the mid-term election that's now two weeks away. He says typically the minority party does well in the mid-terms.

 

               

 

Cole is running for re-election and is a heavy favorite to win. Democrat Mary Brannon and Independent Ruby Peters are both running against Cole.

 

Chamber President Resigns; EDC Chairman Steps In

Mark Rathe has stepped down as president of the Chickasha Chamber of Commerce. Rathe had announced he would be resigning in the spring, but he told the chamber board last week that he would be leaving early. Rathe spent five years in Chickasha. He says he'll spend a few months traveling before looking for a new post. In the meantime, Cody Mosley, who was just hired as the new Economic Development Director, will step in as the Chamber president. Mosley has agreed to accept the post with no additional pay, to allow the chamber to fund the staffing and new programming necessary to support chamber members. In a press release, Ed Stanton, the chairman of the Chamber’s board of directors, said Mosley was the ideal choice. Leaders from both the chamber and EDC were looking for guidance regarding renaissance efforts for the downtown area.

 

SCOOP Well a Big Producer for Continental Resources

There’s another large-producing well in the SCOOP region for Continental Resources. A well east of Chickasha is producing 1,600 barrel of oil equivalent and more than 1,500 metric cubic feet of natural gas per day. These are March numbers that were just recently reported to the Oklahoma Corporation Commission. It's the Triple H 2-30-2 well which is about eight miles east of Chickasha next to State Highway 62. It's in section 19 of Township 7 North, Range 5 West.  The well had a spud date of about a year ago and it was completed in March of this year. The oil is out of what's known as the Goddard formation.

 

Storm Drain Work to Impact Grand Avenue Traffic

Work on a storm drain will affect traffic at a busy Chickasha intersection for a few days. The intersection of 7th and Grand Avenue will be closed. Traffic on Grand will not be able to turn north on 7th Street, and southbound traffic on 7^th Street will not have access to Grand. Motorists will have to use 6th or 8th Streets. Also, westbound traffic on Grand Avenue will be narrowed to one lane as the outside westbound lane will be closed. Officials expect the project to last up to three days.

Accident Victim's Condition Worsens

A Verden man continues fighting for his life following a traffic accident in which two people died. 51-year old Gary Sanders was taken to an Oklahoma City hospital and admitted in fair condition after last Friday's crash. His condition has been downgraded to critical. Sanders suffered internal injuries in the accident. The two people who died in the crash were 65-year old Harold Milsap and 51-year old Shirley Milsap, also of Verden. The crash happened just after 5:00 p.m. last Friday afternoon at U.S. Highway 62 and Lake Burtchi Road. The highway patrol said the accident is still under investigation.

 

Teen Dies in Motorcycle Crash              

Tragedy in Stephens County, as a high school student dies in a motorcycle accident. 18-year old Joe Lumbert died when his motorcycle crashed Friday morning. Lumbert was a student at Bray-Doyle High School where he was a member of the football team. A candlelight vigil for Lumbert will be held at 6:00 p.m. tonight at the Bray-Doyle football field.

 

Former Gabriel Employee Accused of Embezzlement

A former employee of Gabriel Ride Control Products is accused of stealing copper and brass from the plant then cashing it in at a local business. A warrant was issued for the arrest of 44-year old Heath Ray Mason of Ninnekah, after Gabriel officials found video surveillance they say shows Mason removing several containers of the material. The allegations first came forward back in April. An arrest warrant for was issued in August and Mason was arrested late last week. The arrest warrant affidavit alleges Mason received more than $1,100 for nearly 400 pounds of copper and more than 100 pounds of brass. Mason spent the weekend in the Grady County Jail. He could have his initial appearance on the felony embezzlement charge this morning.

 

Gov. Fallin Touts Success in Business Development

As Oklahomans prepare to elect a new governor in a couple of weeks, current Governor Mary Fallin has a little over two months remaining in office. Among her accomplishments in her eight years as governor is improving the state's business climate. Her chief of staff Chris Benge was in Chickasha earlier this month for the announcement of the upcoming construction of the Midship Pipeline project. Benge says the governor has worked to make Oklahoma more business-friendly.

 

               

 

Benge says the State Department of Commerce has recorded more than 500 successful business projects during the Fallin administration, which includes recruiting new firms and assisting in the growth of current business and industry.

 

Anadarko, Carnegie Receive EMS Grants

Two Caddo County communities will receive State Department of Health grants for their emergency medical services programs. Anadarko and Carnegie are among several communities sharing in $1.7 million in grants for EMS services. A press release from the health department said the money comes from restricted tobacco taxes. The program was established by state lawmakers 10 years ago to fund assessment activities, re-organization of at-risk emergency medical services, the development of regional services, as well as training for medical directors and personnel, and equipment needs. A panel of nine volunteers review and score proposals that were submitted.

The allegations first came forward back in April. An arrest warrant for was issued in August and Mason was arrested late last week. The arrest warrant affidavit alleges Mason received more than $1,100 for nearly 400 pounds of copper and more than 100 pounds of brass. Mason spent the weekend in the Grady County Jail. He could have his initial appearance on the felony embezzlement charge this morning.

 

Gov. Fallin Touts Success in Business Development

As Oklahomans prepare to elect a new governor in a couple of weeks, current Governor Mary Fallin has a little over two months remaining in office. Among her accomplishments in her eight years as governor is improving the state's business climate. Her chief of staff Chris Benge was in Chickasha earlier this month for the announcement of the upcoming construction of the Midship Pipeline project. Benge says the governor has worked to make Oklahoma more business-friendly.

 

               

 

Benge says the State Department of Commerce has recorded more than 500 successful business projects during the Fallin administration, which includes recruiting new firms and assisting in the growth of current business and industry.

 

Anadarko, Carnegie Receive EMS Grants

Two Caddo County communities will receive State Department of Health grants for their emergency medical services programs. Anadarko and Carnegie are among several communities sharing in $1.7 million in grants for EMS services. A press release from the health department said the money comes from restricted tobacco taxes. The program was established by state lawmakers 10 years ago to fund assessment activities, re-organization of at-risk emergency medical services, the development of regional services, as well as training for medical directors and personnel, and equipment needs. A panel of nine volunteers review and score proposals that were submitted.

Two Die in Verden Traffic Accident

Two people have died and a third person is hospitalized following a traffic accident on the east edge of Verden late yesterday. Killed in the crash were 65-year old Harold Milsap and  51-year old Shirley Milsap both of Verden. The highway patrol says were both air-lifted to an Oklahoma City hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival. The survivor of the crash, 51-year old Gary Sanders, also of Verden, suffered trunk and internal injuries and was last in fair condition. The accident happened about 5:15 p.m. Friday at U.S. Highway 62 and Lake Burtchi Road. The highway patrol says the accident is under investigation. The only details provided are that Sanders was driving a pickup and the Milsaps were in a sedan. The highway was closed for two hours.

 

Man Accused of Kidnapping Former Girlfriend

A Grady County man with a history of violence has been arrested for kidnapping his estranged girlfriend. A warrant had been issued for the arrest of 30-year old Mark Anthony Clymer of Tuttle. He was taken into custody Thursday afternoon. The incident happened at a home near Tuttle about a week ago. In addition to kidnapping, Clymer is also accused of felony assault and battery in connection with the case. The victim claimed Clymer held her against her will after she wanted to end their 7-month relationship. Clymer has previous convictions of assault, including assault on a police officer out of Canadian and Beckham counties. He remains in the Grady County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bond.

               

 

Auto Swap Meet, Craft Show End Today

Looks like great weather today for the final day for the 50th annual fall swap meet hosted by the Chickasha Antique Auto Club. The event draws thousands of visitors from around the world. Most of the vendors are those who enjoy the challenge of restoring old cars and trucks, and share their favorite stories. Admission to the swap meet is free. There is a fee for parking, with proceeds going to local charities. The swap meet is on 35 acres owned by the auto club just east of downtown Chickasha and next to the Grady County Fairgrounds. There are also some vendors indoors in the non-climate controlled rodeo arena on the fairgrounds proper. In conjunction with the swap meet is the fall fling craft and vendor show, in the north exhibit building at the fairgrounds. Admission to that event is also free. Proceeds from door prize ticket sales will help the family of Justin Boyer of Verden, who is being treated for acute myeloid leukemia, a rare form of cancer. Donations are also being accepted for the Boyers.

Gross Production Tax Discussion Set at State Capital

One of the most controversial issues debated at the state capital last spring was gross production taxes on the energy industry. For the most part, Republicans are opposed to an increase in the tax, while Democrats support an increase. State lawmakers will be taking an in-depth look at the pros and cons of increasing the tax during an interim study. Republican State Senator Casey Murdoch requested the interim study, with the first meeting on the issue next Tuesday morning at the state capital. In additional to gross production taxes on oil and gas, officials will be taking a look at state revenues from other energy forms such as electricity production from wind and coal.

 

Trio Charged in Brutal Attack

A man is recovering from a brutal attack in which he suffered broken bones in his face and cuts on his head that had to be closed with staples. Three men were arrested in connection with the attack. The assault occurred at a party, and reportedly started when the driver of a car ran into a fence. Documents filed in Grady County District Court indicate the victim initially confronted the driver, then the victim was allegedly kicked and beaten by as many as four individuals. Someone intervened and dragged the victim away from the fight, and he was taken by a private vehicle to a Mustang hospital for treatment. The men were arrested in connection with the attack are 20-year old Lane Garrett Vanschuyver, 18-year old Blake Alexander Hill, and 18-year old Ethan Hunter Calhoun all of Chickasha. All have been formally charged with felony aggravated assault and battery. All are out of jail after posting $5,000 bond.

 

Chix PD Again part of National K9 Grant Poll

Chickasha residents are being asked to help out the police department in a national program that supports K9 officer programs. The Aftermath K9 Grant will distribute a total of $15,000 to the eight police departments that get the most votes in an on-line survey. First place gets $5,000. The program was founded to showcase, support, and reward the contributions made by law enforcement and their K9 partners. Voting is open until Friday, November 2nd and you can vote every 12 hours. Outlaws, Lawmen Theme for Historical Society Fundraiser

The Grady County Historical Society is preparing for its annual meeting and fund raiser. Outlaws and Lawmen is the theme for the evening. Pat Cunningham who is the curator for the historical society's museum says they'll also have a silent auction of several OU football items.

 

               

 

The annual meeting will be Tuesday, Nov. 6th at the USAO Ballroom. Tickets are $35 per person and may be purchase at the museum in dowtown Chickasha.

Regional Consumer Spending Still Strong

Consumer spending is still strong in the Grady County region. It's estimated that more than $45.5 million was spent on taxable goods and services in July. That's the third best month for consumer spending in 2018. While the number is down about 3.9 percent from June it is an increase of nearly 39 percent from the same time a year ago. We estimate consumer spending when we see the county’s sales tax revenue and factor in the county sales tax rate. Sales tax revenue for September was nearly $860,000 which was paid on retail purchases in July. Here is the breakdown on where that money goes, all approved by county voters: $304,000 is for the Grady County Fairgrounds; $269,000 is for Grady Memorial Hospital; $152,000 is divided among 20 fire districts, with each one receiving $7,600; $152,000 is shared among the seven senior nutrition centers, with each one collecting nearly $22,000; Tuttle EMS gets almost $28,000; and Rush Springs EMS receives about $7,000. Grady County also received almost $250,000 in use tax revenue, which are sales taxes paid on Internet purchases. That’s way up from the nearly $60,000 collected for the same time last year.

 

Chickasha Consumer Spending Also Healthy

In the City of Chickasha, consumer spending for July is estimated at $29 million. That's an increase of nearly 11 percent from June and up more than 22 percent from July of 2017. Sales tax revenue for the city was more than $1.1 million. Here's how that money is to be distributed. $586,000 goes to the general fund, about $290,000 is for water, sewer, and Chickasha Municipal Authority projects, and $218,000 is for Capital Improvement Projects. Chickasha use tax collections were more than $100,000 for September, up from $84,000 last year.

 

Missing Caddo County Teen Added to National List

A Caddo County teen missing for nearly two months is now included in a national program to find missing children. 17-year old Makaydon Thompson has been missing since Aug. 26^th from the northern Caddo County town of Hydro. She's now on the list compiled by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Authorities think she may be in Oklahoma, possibly in Hydro or the Blaine County region. She is Caucasian, 5 feet, 5 inches tall, and has brown hair and blue eyes. She has tattoos of crosses on her arms and legs. Antique Auto Swap Meet Underway

Car and truck parts and lots of transportation-related items will being sold and traded at the annual fall swap meet put on by the Chickasha Antique Auto Club. About 400 vendors are expected, with many of them arriving yesterday. Among them was Doug Rodman who is here from Kingman, Kansas which is just outside Wichita.

 

               

 

Rodman says he's among six brothers and brothers-in-law who spend their vacation time coming to both the fall and spring swap meets. In addition to the parts his group is selling, he's looking for parts for his 1955 and 1956 Chevrolets. This is the 50th fall swap meet for the auto club. It runs today through Saturday.

 

Hall of Fame Coach Charles Heatly Dies

Longtime Lindsay girls basketball coach Charles Heatly has died. Heatly was 84 when he passed away Wednesday morning. A member of the Oklahoma and National Coaches Halls of Fame, Heatly won more than 650 games and two state titles in the 6-on-6 era. For a time, he also coached the Lindsay boys. Heatly established a summer camp for girls that brought in youth from around the county during its 25-year history. He was one of the founders of the Oklahoma Girls Basketball Coaches Association, and was honored at the 2005 NCAA Women's Final Four for his lifelong service to women's basketball. Funeral for Coach Heatly will be at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at Lindsay High School. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lindsay Schools Scholarship Fund.

Energy Firms Merge in Half-Billion Dollar Deal

Two Texas companies with heavy investments in the SCOOP and STACK plays will soon become one. Houston's Nine Energy Service is paying nearly a half-billion dollars for Magnum Oil Tools International of Corpus Christi. The website OK Energy Today reports it is a $493 million deal. Nine Energy officials say the partnership solidifies the company as one of the premier providers of completion-focused technology. The takeover includes $334 million in cash and 5 million shares of Nine common stock valued at nearly $160 million. Magnum has no debt. In addition to operations in Oklahoma, Nine Energy has interests in the Permian Basin, The Bakken in North Dakota, and throughout Canada.

 

Plan Would Help Property Owners Demolish Aging Homes

Chickasha officials are considering a plan that would help property owners pay for the demolition of dilapidated homes and structures. If approved, the city would provide some funds to pay for the removal of substandard properties. The city council discussed the proposal during an informal work session this week. Officials say the program is intended to provide a means to conveniently demolish aging or substandard buildings and improve the quality of neighborhoods. In background information from city hall provided to our news department, the plan calls for the city and property owner to discuss the cost before any demolition work occurs. Should the project cost more than the agreed to price, the city will pay the difference. If it is less, an adjustment would be made in the property owner's favor. The city would pay for the entire project initially, with the property owner given six months to pay the city. Due to funding limits, the maximum cost for any one project would be $3,000. No structures larger than a duplex qualify, nor does commercial property. The council will formally consider the plan at a later date.

 

FOP President Praises New Contract

The president of the Chickasha Fraternal Order of Police is happy with the new collective bargaining agreement approved by the city council this week. Clayton Hobbs leads FOP Local 129. He says the conract includes some continuing education assistance for officers.

 

               

The contract also calls for an end to the 12-hour shifts police officers had been working over the last year, with the shifts returning to eight hours.             

 

Fire Destroys Camper at Lake Chickasha

A follow-up today about a structure fire at Lake Chickasha we told you about yesterday. A fifth-wheel camper was fully involved when fire crews arrived. Fire fighters from Chickasha, Verden, and Anadarko were dispatched. The fire was reported just before 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. Chickasha Fire Chief Brian Zalewski said the occupants of the camper were not inside when the fire started. Firefighters spent about an hour putting out the flames. There were no injuries. Damage estimate wasn't available. Zalewski said they are still trying to determine how the fire started.

 

Competency Hearing Set for Woman who Stabbed Husband

A Chickasha woman with a lengthy criminal record is now accused of stabbing her husband and kicking a deputy. 55-year old Wanda Darlene Rutledge was arrested back in August in the Apache area. Papers filed in Caddo County District court allege she stabbed her husband three times, and even told officers she wished she had killed him. Rutledge facing felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon and assault on an officer for kicking the deputy. A competency hearing for Rutledge is scheduled for November 15^th.  She remains in the Caddo County Jail pending a $50,000 bond.  Rutledge is facing up to life in prison if convicted. She has previous felony convictions from 2014 out of Grady County and a 2009 conviction out of Pontotoc County in the Ada area.

Police, Fire Contracts Approved by Chickasha City Council

New collective bargaining agreements for Chickasha's fire and police unions get city council approval. The council voted unanimously to authorize the contracts following a 20-minute behind-closed-doors discussion during last night's regularly scheduled city council meeting. City Manager John Noblitt said the agreements do not include cost-of-living-adjustments. For the Fraternal Order of Local Police Local 129, the agreement calls for police to return to eight-hour shifts. Officers had been working 12-hour shifts due to a shortage of officers. Police officers who are promoted will be placed in the step process in the new rank that guarantees them a 3 percent pay hike. It also states that officers entitled to holiday pay will be those officers who actually work the day of the holiday, not the day that city hall may be closed. For the International Association of Firefighters Local 2041, the agreement calls for pay revisions for those who hold the rank of captain. It adds a new rank of Rescue Technician Coordinator which comes with a 50-cent-per hour incentive.

               

Water Treatment Plant, Employees Earn State Honors

Employees working for USW, the private contractor for the City of Chickasha's water treatment plants, are honored at the state level for their job performances. They were recognized during the annual Oklahoma Water and Pollution Control Conference that was held earlier this month. Debbie Seagroves was named plant supervisor of the year; Derrick McDaniel was named maintenance supervisor of the year; Darrel White received The Darcy Award as the waste water operator of the year; and Tim Anderson won the Stapley Award for water operator of the year. USW was also recognized for having the most improved plant and the plant of the year for medium-sized communities. Steve Hardeman, supervisor of the Norman wastewater plant, serves on the board for the Water and Pollution Control conference. He announced the awards during last night’s city council meeting.

 

               

 

The water and pollution control group dates back to 1926, and is among the oldest operator associations in the country.

 

Truck Fire Slows Highway 19 Traffic

A truck fire southeast of Chickasha slowed traffic on Highway 19 for a brief time yesterday. A one-ton truck hauling a trailer with a backhoe caught fire near the Little Washita River Bridge, about  4 1/2 miles east of the State Highway 19 and U.S. Highway 81 junction. Alex and Bradley Fire Departments responded to the fire which happened about 12:30 p.m. Monday. A small grass fire also ignited but fire crews quickly had that under control. Buddy Myers with the Grady County Fire Department said the truck was a total loss but the backhoe and trailer were salvageable. An electrical problem is suspected of causing the fire. There were no injuries. The truck driver wasn’t identified.  

 

Suspect Charged with Assault on Police Officer

An update now to a story we first aired late last week, about a man arrested for the alleged assault of a police officer. Prosecutors have filed misdemeanor charges against 34-year old Donald Heddlesten. He's charged with assault on a police officer and obstruction after Chickasha police were called to a home last Thursday night to investigate a domestic disturbance. Heddlesten is out of jail after posting a $1,500 bond.

 

Man Arrested for Having Stolen Pickup

Authorities arrest a man they say was in possession of a stolen pickup. The arrest was made at a Chickasha home last Friday afternoon. An officer spotted a suspicious truck parked in the driveway of a home in the 500 block of South 16th. When the officer ran a routine check on the tag it was found that the truck had been stolen out of Vinita. A probable cause affidavit filed by the officer indicates a man sitting in the pickup said he bought the truck on the side of the road in Oklahoma City, but he did not have a bill of sale. Police also say the found meth and drug items in the truck. Police arrested 25-year old Joseph Alexander Washington of Yukon. Prosecutors have formally charged him with felonies which include possession of a stolen vehicle and drugs. His bond was set at $5,000.

Fire Station Roof Repairs May be Re-bid

Chickasha officials are going back to square one for roof repairs on one of the city's fire stations. Tonight, the city council will consider rejecting all bids received for repairs at Fire Station No. 2 at 16th and Country Club Road. Administrators say all six bids came in over the appraised insurance value, and that funding is not available to offset added costs for recommended insulation, removal of skylights, and additional hail protection. The bids ranged from just under $45,000 to more than $100,000. Officials are recommending that the project be re-bid, and reduce the amount of work they originally planned for.

 

Fire, Police Union Contract Talks to be Reviewed

The council is also to go behind closed doors to discuss the status of collective bargaining agreements with the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 2041 and the Fraternal Order of Police Local 129. The council will consider the appointment of Leasa Furr to the post of city treasurer, and recognize USW, the city's contractor for water treatment. The council meets at 6:30 p.m. tonight at city hall. Prior to the meeting, a special work session will be held to discuss a demolition program and to get an update on city projects. The work session will start at 5:30 p.m.

 

Semi Crash Shuts Down Turnpike               

A traffic accident involving a semi forced officials to shut down part of the H.E. Bailey Turnpike in Chickasha last night. The accident happened just before 11:00 p.m. near Mile Marker 81 which is just east of the U.S. Highway 81 junction. Both westbound lanes of traffic were closed for a short time. Both lanes were re-opened about midnight. No information is available about the accident.

 

50th Antique Auto Swap Meet Set this Weekend

Thousands of antique auto enthusiasts from around the world will be in Chickasha this weekend for one of the longest running events of its kind. Each fall and spring, the Chickasha Antique Auto Club hosts a swap meet that attracts people who restore old cars and trucks. The club has been around for years and was largely responsible for the restoration of Chickasha's Historic Rock Island Railroad depot. Bud Andrus tells how that came about.

 

               

 

That federal grant was for $700,000 so altogether the restoration was a $1 million project. The fall swap meet is this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday on the grounds owned by the antique auto club next to the Grady County Fairgrounds. 400 vendors or more are expected and a few will be in the Grady County Fairgrounds rodeo arena, which is the one south of the community building. Admission is free. There is a fee for parking with proceeds benefitting local charities.

 

USAO to Kick-off Davis-Waldorf Series

Another season of unique performances will begin at USAO next week. The Davis-Waldorf Performing Arts Series will host four programs over the next several months, starting with a group of young ladies from  Africa who go by the name of Nobuntu. Members of the ensemble from Zimbabwe blend the traditional music of their culture with Afro-jazz and gospel. The group was founded in 2011 when some noticed there was an absence of female professional music groups in their country. The name Nobuntu represents an African concept that values humbleness, love, purpose, unity, and family from a woman's viewpoint. The performance will be next Thursday, Oct. 25th at 7:30 p.m. in Te Ata Memorial Auditorium. Tickets are available at the USAO business office, on-line, or at the door. Mother, Child Unhurt in Pipe Wrench Attack

Frightening moments for a mother and child when a man smashes car windows with a 36-pound pipe wrench. It happened at a home in Bradley Thursday morning. According to probable cause affidavit from a sheriff's deputy, the woman claimed the man was yelling and screaming "why did you do it", and wielding a three-foot pipe wrench. It's alleges he smashed the windows of two cars, including one where the child was in the back seat. The woman and child managed to get away in one car, driving to Alex where she called 9-1-1. The deputy that responded was able to find the suspect in Bradley. The suspect also screamed at the deputy and alleged the woman killed his wife and put her body in the woods. When asked if he was on meth the suspect screamed that he would test positive. The deputy found the pipe wrench still lodged in the windshield of a vehicle. The suspect, 32-year old Bryson Scott Johnson of Bradley, was taken to jail. He has been formally charged with felony assault and misdemeanor vandalism. He remains in jail in lieu of $40,000 bond.

 

Officer Avoids Injury in Domestic Violence Call

A Chickasha police officer escapes injury in a confrontation with a domestic violence suspect. Authorities were summoned to a home in the 1500 block of South 8^th Thursday night, where a man and woman were arguing. The man denied that he and the woman were arguing and told officers to leave. He tried to prevent officers from going into the house to talk to the woman. A probable cause affidavit indicates the suspect became combative and physically threatened officers. The document does not indicate the suspect actually attacked them. The suspect, 34-year old Donald Heddlesten, was taken to the Grady County Jail where he is being held on complaints of assault on a police officer and obstruction. He'll remain in jail through the weekend.  Prosecutors will review the case to determine if formal charges should be filed.

 

Grants Awarded by Chickasha Community Foundation

A local foundation has awarded two grants for community projects. The grants are from the Chickasha Community Foundation. One of grants will establish a holiday lighting project in the downtown area and the other to help with the music department at USAO. The funds are made possible by an endowment created by the Doris Wilkes Trust. It was established in 2011 with a contribution of $2.4 million. The interest earned on the endowment each year assists in funding worthy projects. A $45,000 grant was awarded to the Chickasha Economic Development Council in a partnership with the City of Chickasha. It will used to purchase a tall artificial Christmas tree to be placed at the Rock Island Depot during the holidays. A $28,000 grant was awarded to the USAO Foundation which will be used to purchase marimbas and steel drums for the USAO Music Department. Since its beginning, the foundation has awarded more than $850,000 to worthy programs, including the Chickasha Public School Foundation, the high school band, and the Grady County Historical Society.

 

Chickasha Hosts State Optimists

Dozens of Optimist International members in the Sooner State are meeting for the Oklahoma District Convention. They'll have a number of workshops and leadership training programs. Among those attending are Ron Whitaker of Broken Arrow who is Oklahoma District Governor; Paul Lucas of Odessa, Texas, who is the southwest regional vice president; and Diane Clark of Ft. Worth who is the immediate past-president of the North Texas District. Chickasha Optimist member Margaret Davis invites anyone interested in Optimist International to drop by. A big monster truck show and mud race set for this weekend at the Grady County Fairgrounds has been postponed due to the wet weather. The event has been re-scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 3rd and Sunday Nov. 4th.

Small town airports like the ones in Chickasha, Anadarko, and Lindsay should be able to continue to get federal matching grants to help with future improvements. The U.S. Senate this week passed the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Re-authorization Act. We talked with Oklahoma U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe about it.

 

 

Inhofe also praised the announcement of the construction of the Midship natural gas pipeline this week. He also said he opposed President Trump's support of expanding the year-round sale of E-15 gasoline.

 

Voter Registration Deadline is Today                              

Today is the final day for Oklahomans to register to vote, or update voter registration ahead next month's gubernatorial election. You'll have to visit your local county election board to do so, or you can pick up applications at the post office, the tag office, or the library. You can mail them, however it must be postmarked with today’s date in order for you to get your voter registration card in time for the November 6^th election. Those forms and sample ballots can be found on-line on the state election board website: www.elections.ok.gov

 

Native American Code Talkers to be Honored

A weekend ceremony will honor nearly two dozen Native American code talkers who were instrumental during World Wars I and II. The Comanche Indian Veterans Association will recognize the 22 individuals who were responsible for translating commands in their native language. It's an annual ceremony for the group which will meet at the Walters cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon. A more than five-foot tall granite marker will be placed in the cemetery's Veterans Circle of Honor.

 

Cyril Girl wins You Tube Competition

A Cyril teenager has won a YouTube talent competition. Skylie Thompson was among the finalists hoping to get a role on YouTube's Brat Productions. The 14-year old flew to California in August for the talent competition, where her audition included a country song, a ukulele, and a chicken. The competition is a cross between American Idol and America's Got Talent. Skylie is a singer and guitarist, was among the top 10 contestants and eventually one of three finalists.

Large Pipeline Construction Project May Start Soon

Plans announced two years ago to build a natural gas pipeline through parts of central and southeast Oklahoma may soon become a reality. Officials with Midship Pipeline say the pipeline will run from Kingfisher to Durant, and will send locally produced natural gas to the gulf coast for export. Matt Barr is the director of government and public affairs with Midship Pipeline.

 

               

 

Barr said it's a $1 billion project, and that it will create 1,300 jobs. The pipeline will run through eight counties, including Canadian, Grady, Garvin, and Stephens Counties. Officials have spent the last two years getting federal permits approved and talking with land owners as well as state, county and tribal officials. Barr said the pipeline will be three feet in diameter and buried at least four feet underground. The parent company for Midship Pipeline is Cheniere Energy, which is the nation's largest buyer and exporter of natural gas.

 

Pipeline Awards Thousands to USAO, Career Techs

The announcement of the pipeline construction was made at USAO yesterday. USAO is one of several educational institutions sharing in $160,000 in STEM grants issued by Midship. USAO will use the grant to make upgrades to a science and technology lab at Nash Library. Among the equipment to be provided is a new 3-D printer. Canadian Valley Technology Center in El Reno was awarded a similar grant as were several other career tech schools and universities along the pipeline route.

 

Manslaughter Charges Filed in Fatal Crash

A man is arrested for felony manslaughter in connection with a fatal traffic accident that happened in Grady County earlier this year. A warrant was issued last month for the arrest of 52-year old Bill Ray Hepburn, Jr. of Duncan. The accident happened in April about two miles north of Rush Springs on U.S. Highway 81. At the time, the highway patrol reported that Hepburn failed to yield from a stop sign and hit a pickup driven by Ernest Tullos of Comanche. Tullos died at the scene while his wife Carla was hospitalized. Court documents indicate that Hepburn had methamphetamine in his system when the accident occurred. He also had an expired tag and no insurance. Hepburn may be arraigned on the manslaughter charge as early as today.

 

Chickasha Bakery Voted State's Best

A Chickasha bakery has been named the sweetest bakery in Oklahoma. Shollie's Sweets was named the state winner in a national contest to find the top bakery in America. The contest put together by bakery distributor Dawn Foods lasted several months,  with customers asked to vote every day, either in the store or on-line. It's a great honor for the bakery which has only been in operation for about 2 1/2 years. Owner Shollie Hammons was the only employee when it opened, and the store now employs as many as nine. Hammons talks about some of her customer's favorite items.

 

               

 

Many of Shollie’s Sweets desserts are available at local restaurants InterUrban and A and E Grill. The  bakery also has its own brand of jerky, and does catering. A special celebration will be held at a later date.

Natural gas continues its upward trend, climbing to $3.28 per million BTUs.

Mother Arrested for Fraud, Claiming Daughter had Cancer

A woman who claimed her seven-year-old daughter had cancer is facing felony charges in Grady County District Court. 31-year old Jamie Kaye Parker of Tuttle is accused of lying about her daughter's health, and collecting more than $3,500 she says was for the child’s treatment of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Investigators say the woman even shaved the girl's head and told the child her doctor's appointments were for chemotherapy treatments. DHS first told Grady County investigators about the allegations last month. An arrest warrant was issued last week, and Parker was taken into custody on Friday. She remains in jail in lieu of $100,000 bond. It's not the first time Parker is accused of fraud. Two years ago, she pleaded guilty to embezzlement while serving as treasurer for the booster club for the Bridge Creek high school wrestling program. She was given a five-year deferred sentence and ordered to pay restitution. In 2014, Parker pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor bogus check charge.

 

Gov. Issues State of Emergency Due to Flooding, Tornadoes

Gov. Mary Fallin has issued a state of emergency in all 77 Oklahoma counties as a result of recent flooding and yesterday's tornado outbreak. Heavy rains resulted in flooding in a number of areas. High winds resulted in damage to homes, businesses, and power lines. Unofficial reports indicated that about a dozen tornadoes may have touched down in east central Oklahoma including several in the Oklahoma City metro area. The state of emergency is in effect for 30 days. It allows state agencies to make emergency purchases related to disaster relief.              

 

One Hospitalized After Head-on Crash

A head-on collision near Sterling leaves one man in serious condition. 19-year old Tyler Hale of Lawton was air-lifted to an Oklahoma City hospital after his car was hit by an on-coming pickup that tried to turn in front of him. The accident happened about 10:45 a.m. Tuesday about three miles west of Sterling on State Highway 17. The highway patrol reports Hale was pinned in his car for about 45 minutes. The driver of the pickup, 59-year old Daniel Capri of Fletcher, was not hurt.

 

Oil and Gas Expo Set

A huge day for the energy industry tomorrow, as the Oklahoma Oil and Gas Expo will be held at the state fairgrounds in Oklahoma City. More than 300 exhibitors will be on hand and organizers expect some 4,000 visitors. Mindy Stitt is with the Oklahoma Energy Resources Board.

 

               

 

The event is put together by a division of the OERB called the Sustaining Oklahoma's Energy Resources program. This is the 22nd year for this one-day event, where oil and gas reps will network and get information on improving their operations. It's free and open to the public at the Bennett Events Center at the state fairgrounds.

 

Grady County Well Completions Reported

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission reports some oil and gas well completions in Grady County. One is the Sycamore well by Casillas Operating in Section 35 of Township 5 North, Range 5 West southeast of Bradley. It's producing about 440 barrels of oil equivalent and about 300 metric cubic feet of natural gas per day at a depth of about 19,000 feet. The spud date was November 24th of last year. Apache Corporation completed the Woodford well in Section 28 of Township 6 North, Range 6 West about five miles east of Ninnekah.  It's bringing about 320 barrels of oil equivalent and 5,700 metric cubic feet of natural gas per day. The spud date was this past January.

Fatal Officer-involved Shooting Starts with

Truck Reported Stolen out of Grady County

The OSBI is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting, which started when a truck was reported stolen out of Grady County. It ended in Okarche following a high-speed pursuit where the trucked crashed, and then officers opened-fire when the driver got out of the truck with a weapon. The pursuit started when Union City police spotted the truck which was reportedly stolen from the Braum's Dairy west of Tuttle. The pursuit reached speeds of 100 miles per hour heading north on U.S. Highway 81 to and through El Reno, where several law enforcement agencies joined in. Canadian County Sheriff Chris West says five deputies have been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is under investigation. None of the officers were injured. Officials have not identified the individual who died.

 

Chickasha New Construction Jumps in September

After a couple of down months, new construction in Chickasha was quite active in September. The city's Community Development Department approved permits totaling $4.4 million in construction last month. 19 total permits were approved. Leading the way was a $3.2 million project for CMS Willowbrook to build a new addition to the Grady County Jail. Also approved was a $165,000 project for Parkview Christian Church to build a gymnasium. H and T Construction was awarded a $35,000 work order to construct a metal building to be used for storage and a nursery at Kendall's Flowers in downtown. A $30,000 project was approved for CharDon Builders to build an awning at Bill Wallace School. The funds come from a Chickasha Community Foundation grant issued to the school last year. Bordwine Development was authorized for a $30,000 remodeling and add-on project to a current building on Pikes Peak Road. Permits for four new single-family homes were approved, together valued at nearly $1 million. Total construction approved since the first of the year has now topped $22 million.

 

Local Emergency Planning Group to Meet              

An update on how to minimize damage and destruction from disasters will be part of the discussion at this week's meeting of the Grady County Local Emergency Planning Committee. The group consists of mainly emergency management and law enforcement officials. The group will get an update on the county's emergency operation plan, and review an upcoming table-top exercise with Cardinal Mid-Stream and Camino Resources. The panel will also review an earth, wind, and fire statewide exercise that will be held next month. Bruce Anthony is chairman of the Local Emergency Planning Committee. The group will meet at 11:30 a.m. Thursday on the Chickasha campus of the Canadian Valley Technology Center.

 

CV Tech Program Helps High School Grads              

An Alex man is taking advantage of a unique program that gives high school graduates a chance to learn a trade, with no out-of-pocket expenses. 22-year old Anthany Mainka is an auto body student at Canadian Valley Technology Center. He's getting a second chance to get some critical job training, through CV Tech's Next Step Scholarship. It allows high school graduates or anyone with a GED to attend courses for free until they are 24 years old. While high school students are able to attend career tech schools at no-cost, many are unable to take advantage of the opportunity. Mainka had actually planned on going to college after graduating from Alex high school but health issues forced him to take a different path. He had a mechanical background, as both his father and grandfather worked in the field, but Anthony was more interested in body work. He's attending classes all day, and hopes to earn his certification within a year.

Three Hospitalized After Crash

Three people are hospitalized and one of them was last in critical condition after a traffic accident south of Tuttle yesterday. 68-year old Leslie Wayne Price of Tuttle was air-lifted to an Oklahoma city hospital and admitted in critical condition with numerous injuries. 46-year old Heath Stone and 74 year old Charlene Stone, both also of Tuttle, were taken by ambulance to an Oklahoma City hospital and were last in fair condition. The accident happened on State Highway 4 about 2 1/2 miles south of State Highway 37 at Fox Lane, just before 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Traffic on Highway 4 was shut down in both directions for nearly an hour and a half. The Highway patrol reports that Price faled to yield from a stop sign, and was hit in th driver's side by an SUV driven by Heath Stone. Everyone was wearing their seat belts.

 

OK 2030 Coming to Chickasha

Chickasha will be one of several stops for a statewide group looking to improve Oklahoma's economy, workforce, and business climate. It's called OK 2030. It's a project of the State Chamber of Oklahoma Research Foundation. Leaders are gathering input from business and community leaders statewide to develop a plan, and to hopefully put the plan into action. The Southwest Oklahoma Forum will be held at USAO next Tuesday, Oct. 16th. The Chickasha Chamber of Commerce is co-sponsoring the program. It will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. that afternoon.

 

Regional School Land Commission Leases to be Auctioned

Leases for thousands of acres of land belonging to the Oklahoma School Land Commission will be on the auction block later this month. The group owns about 740,000 acres, mostly in western Oklahoma. Harry Birdwell with the school and commission talks about some of the leases that will be available in the Chickasha and Anadarko areas.

 

               

 

The land can be used for farming or recreational use. Money from the lease auctions are provided to Oklahoma school districts. To see a list of the leases to be auctioned go to www.clo.ok.gov

 

Permits-to-Drill Approved in Grady, Caddo Counties

Several permits to drill oil and gas wells in the region were issued by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission last week. Among them was one to Travis Peak Resources in Section 5 of Township 8 North, Range 6 West which is a couple of miles north of Amber. It's the King No. 1H-32-29 well. Roan Resources was issued two permits to drill in Section 16 of Township 9 North, Range 6 West, about three miles west of Tuttle. Both are Don King wells. Continental Resources was awarded permits to drill three wells, including the Simms No. 2 in Section 5 of Township 6 North, Range 5 West; Simms No. 4 in Section 5 of Township 6 North, Range Five West, and Simms No. 6, in section 32 of Township 7 North, Range 5 West. All are just southeast of State Highway 39 and the Alex Highway near Tabler. Newfield Exploration was awarded a permit to drill Ricks No. 2 in Section 9 of Township 7 North, Range 5 West, also near Tabler. In Caddo County, Territory Resources issued a permit to drill in Section 4 of Township 5 North, Range 9 West for the Big Bitsche, No. 3-4.

 

Students to Take Part in National Walk-to-School Day               

Some Chickasha school kids will take part in National Walk to School Day. Students at Bill Wallace School will be walking a few blocks from Shannon Springs Park to the school Wednesday morning. Walkers will meet on the west side of the park around 12th and Montana at 7:20 a.m. Wednesday, then will walk to the school starting at 7:30. When they get to school the students will have breakfast around their regular time. Everyone is welcome to participate in the national walk to school day, set aside to show youngsters how to make healthy lifestyle choices.

State Revenue Continues Climb

After yesterday's news of near-record low unemployment in Oklahoma comes another report showing the state's economy is doing well. State revenue for the month of September was the highest ever recorded for that month at $1.2 billion. And it's the 10th straight month that revenues were up by at least 10 percent. Over the course of the past 12 months, state revenues are at the $12.5 billion mark, which is also a record for a 12-month period. Corporate and personal income taxes for the month were up by more than 11 percent and sales tax collections were up by more than 6.5 percent. A tax hike on oil and gas production brought in more than $30 million, the $1-per-pack increase in the cigarette tax collected an additional $9.3 million, and the increase in fuel taxes was responsible  for an additional $8.3 million.

 

Pursuit Suspect in Custody

An overnight pursuit by Chickasha police leads to the arrest of a man who pleaded guilty to a previous charge of eluding. 29-year old Robert Russell Cowan was taken into custody after the chase. We don't have details about what happened, but Cowan was booked into the Grady County Jail early this morning and is being held on complaints of eluding and DUI. Cowan pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of eluding stemming from an arrest in 2013. He was given a two-year deferred sentence, which was completed in 2015.

 

Arrest Made in Child Abuse Probe

A Grady County woman is in custody after a warrant was issued for her arrest for child abuse allegations. 31-year old Jamie Kay Parker of Tuttle was booked into the Grady County Jail yesterday. The website On Demand Court Records indicates she was wanted for child abuse in a medical setting and for bogus checks. No other details are available.

 

Vietnam Vet Gets Graveside Monument

A Sterling soldier who was honored for his heroism during the Vietnam War now has a monument at his grave at Ft. Sill National Cemetery. Ira Whitaker was awarded a Distinguished Service Cross for what he did during the 1968 fire fight at Fire Support Base Rita. At the time, he was serving as Command Sgt.-Major of 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery. The Lawton Constitution reports that Whitaker was awarded the cross for defending an M109 Paladin howitzer. That howitzer now serves as a marker at Whitaker's grave. Whitaker's widow, Wanda, and veterans who supported the 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam were on hand for the dedication. Whitaker passed away in February of last year.

 

Lawton Woman Sues President Trump

A Lawton woman is suing President Trump for millions of dollars over this week's test of the national wireless Emergency Alert System. Donna Traylor has filed a $10 million lawsuit against the president in Comanche County District Court claiming the alert violated her rights. The test was sent to every smart phone in the country as part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency's plan to develop a national alert system. The Lawton Constitution reports Traylors’ suit alleges the president violated her due process rights under the 5th and 14^th amendments of the U.S. Constitution.

 

Ampo Claims Softball Title

In sports, the Amber-Pocasset Lady Panther softball team wins the Class A State softball title. The 2^nd-ranked Panthers defeated No. 5 Ripley 5-1 at the Ballfields at Firelake in Shawnee last night. Sophomore pitcher Bailey Kite threw a complete game and allowed the one run on three hits. She also had the game-winning hit, an RBI-single in a three-run fifth that put Ampo on top for good. The Panthers got to the title game with a 9-3 win over Canute. Ripley earned its way to the championship with a 3-2 win over top-ranked Binger-Oney. Ripley’s win prevented a No. 1 vs. No. 2 match-up in the title game. The championship is Ampo’s first softball title.

Unemployment Falls Statewide

Jobless rates fell in all 77 Oklahoma counties in August. Statewide unemployment was down to 3.7 percent and regional county unemployment continued showing a solid economy. Grady County unemployment fell from 3.2 percent in July to 3.1 percent in August. It’s also down from 4.1 percent from August of last year. The Oklahoma Employment Security Commission reports that 830 individuals in Grady County were without a job but seeking employment with the agency. That's out of a labor force of more than 26,000 people. In Caddo County, the jobless rate fell from 4 percent to 3.6 percent; Garvin County slides from 3.6 to 3.3 percent; McClain County is down to 2.8 percent; Stephens and Comanche counties were both down to 4.2 percent. Cleveland County was down to 3 percent.

 

Trailer Dislodges from Semi; Blocks Traffic

A trailer became disconnected from a semi this morning, shutting down a roadway southwest of Chickasha. It happened at State Highway 277 and Lake Burtchi Road about 6:45 a.m. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported that both the westbound and eastbound lanes of traffic were closed for about 30 minutes. It wasn’t clear if anyone was injured.

 

Teen Faces Felony Burglary Charges

Formal charges have now been filed against a man connected to some vehicle break-ins in a Chickasha neighborhood. 18-year old Rayden Kay Quinn is charged with two counts of felony burglary, and a misdemeanor for marijuana possession. A Chickasha police affidavit indicates a resident witnessed Quinn and a 13-year old trying to break in to vehicles near his home. Authorities found a drill, a cel phone, and credit card allegedly taken from several vehicles. Quinn remains in the Grady County jail in lieu of an $8,000 bond. He's to announce his attorney Oct. 19th with a preliminary hearing conference scheduled Nov. 7th.

 

Medical Marijuana, Workplace Issues Discussion Set

While the use of marijuana for medical purposes is now legal in Oklahoma, how does that affect the workplace? A short seminar on the issue will be held for business owners, managers, and those who supervise employees next week. Allen Hutson, a lawyer with Crowe and Dunleavy Attorneys, will lead the program. He’ll have information on when to test employees, and practical advice regarding the documentation that is required to discipline impaired workers.  This is a free program which will be held next Tuesday, Oct. 9^th on the Chickasha Campus of the Canadian Valley Technology Center. The program is scheduled to run from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Advance registration is requested. Contact CV Tech's Business and Industry Services Division to reserve a seat.

 

Local Youth Wins Big at Tulsa State Fair

It was quite the payday for a young man at the Tulsa State Fair. Baylor Bonham of Newcastle had the grand champion market steer, and the animal brought $30,000 at the premium sale last night. It's the third grand champion he's shown in the nine times he's been to the show. Overall, 147 4H and FFA youth exhibited animals in Tulsa, with about $500,000 paid out from last night's auction.

 

Spangler to be Honored by National Square Dance Group

For 50 years, a local couple has enjoyed spending much of their time square dancing. Gordon and Pauline Spangler have been members of the local Swingin' Chicks Square Dance Club since 1968. This weekend, the United Square Dancers of America will recognize Gordon for celebrating his 100th birthday this year. Anyone who has ever square-danced with Gordon and Pauline are encouraged to attend this special Barn Dance with the Swingin' Chicks. It will be held at Chickasha’s Borden Park Community Center at 8:00 p.m.

Burglary Suspect Linked to Vehicle Break-ins

We have a follow-up to a story we first told you about yesterday, regarding the arrest of man in connection with a residential burglary. The man in custody is accused of committing a string of vehicle break-ins at several homes around the Chickasha Middle School earlier this week. Police arrested 18-year old Rayden Kay Quinn in connection with the break-ins. One victim said that a purse and a cel phone were taken from one of his vehicles. According to the daily police blotter issued to media, Quinn is a suspect in at least four crimes. It's also alleged a couple of juveniles were involved in the break-ins but we've not been able to confirm that report. Quinn remains in the Grady County Jail. Formal charges have yet to be filed by the district attorney.

 

Man Faces Child-Stealing Charge

A Caddo County man is accused of child stealing in connection with an incident with his girlfriend's teenage daughter. 40-year old Jose Allen Pool, who lists a Ft. Cobb address, is charged with a felony in connection with the incident that took place two years ago. Documents filed by the Caddo County sheriff's office say the teen was 13 years old when she was checked out of school by her mom and Pool just before Thanksgiving in 2016. Pool and the teen were taken to a rural area of Caddo County where the mother dropped them off and left. It's alleged that Pool kept the teen away from her mother for nearly two days, and that the girl did not get to eat during that time and had to sleep outdoors in cold weather. The teen was reported missing and authorities issued an alert to be looking for the teen and she was located by law enforcement after missing for about 45 hours. Pool remains in the Caddo County jail in lieu of a $60,000 bond. He's also facing an unrelated felony burglary charge, which occurred about the same time as the alleged child stealing incident.

 

State Election Board Warns of Voter Registration Scam

Here's a warning from the Oklahoma State Election Board. A phone scam has been reported where individuals are being called to register to vote in next month's election. The scam has been reported in several states. The scam is being investigated by the FBI and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Election board officials say voters cannot be registered over the phone. The deadline to register to vote in next month's election is coming up Friday, October 12th. Chix Police, Firefighters, to Recieve Home Security Cameras

A number of Chickasha police officers and fire fighters will be given free home security cameras from a couple of national companies. 60 first responders will receive these innovative cameras in a joint effort of State Farm and Canary. It's part of what's called the Protect the Protectors campaign. The device alerts the users about motion, air quality, and temperature changes in their homes through a smart phone app. A press release announcing the event indicates the campaign helps to protect the homes of police officers and firefighters while they are protecting others. In the last three years, more than 10,000 of these cameras have been provided to first responders across the country. A formal presentation will be held at Chickasha city hall next Thursday.

 

4Hers Do Well at State Fair of Oklahoma

A number of Grady County 4H students did quite well at the State Fair of Oklahoma last month. Liz Taylor is the 4H educator for Grady County.

 

               

 

That's more than 115 exhibits to place in the top 10. Taylor reminds 4H youth and their parents that now is the time to enroll in 4H for the current school year.

Van Slams in to Downtown Gym

There were some anxious moments in downtown Chickasha when a van jumps a curb and crashes into a business. It happened about 4:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Steel Monkey Gym in the 400 block of Chickasha Avenue. Fortunately, no one in the gym nor the driver of the van were injured. An unidentified individual at the scene says the van had recently been equipped with accelerator and brake extensions for a disabled driver.  It was reported the driver hit the accelerator instead of the brake. It was also stated that the added equipment may not have been calibrated properly. The driver of the van was not identified. We have photographs of the accident on our Facebook page.

 

Stolen Car Tip Leads to Pursuit, Manhunt, and Arrest

A stolen car spotted in Chickasha leads to a high-speed pursuit, a manhunt, and the eventual arrest of a burglary suspect. The owner of a Lawton business used social media to ask for information about a Mustang stolen from his business on Monday. A tip indicating the car was seen in Chickasha led to a pursuit by the highway patrol westbound on the H.E. Bailey Turnpike, then west of Elgin to the Dolese rock quarry where the driver abandoned the car and ran into a field. State troopers, Elgin and Comanche Nation police, and the Comanche County sheriff's office were part of the manhunt, where Steven Anthony Miller was eventually taken in to custody. The arrest also led to the recovery of a second vehicle taken from Sooner Hot Rod and Four by Four. That vehicle was found in Tulsa. Three suspects were arrested in connection with that theft.

 

Child Sex Crimes Suspect in Custody

A local man wanted for child sex crimes out of Oklahoma County is arrested by Chickasha police. The website On Demand Court Records indicates a warrant for the arrest of 36-year old Larry Don Freed, Jr. was issued back in January. He's charged with two counts of lewd or indecent acts to a child under 16 years old. Records from the Chickasha police department indicate Freed was arrested at a home near 12th and Iowa Monday afternoon.

 

Burglary Suspect Behind Bars

Chickasha police may have solved a recent burglary with the arrest of a suspect. In custody is 18-year old Rayden Kay Quinn. We don't have details about the allegations against Quinn, but Chickasha police report Quinn was arrested near the middle school at 9^th and Florida early Tuesday morning. Quinn is being held in the Grady County Jail on complaints of burglary, possession of stolen property, and having a controlled dangerous substance. Prosecutors have not yet filed any formal charges against Quinn.

 

Investigation Begins into Prison Death of Sex Offender               

A former school administrator and retired preacher, serving time for child molestation, has died in prison. Jody Hilliard died in at the John Lilley Correctional Center in Boley over the weekend. He was 73. Hilliard worked for Ninnekah and Fletcher school districts in the late 1970s and early 1980s and was a retired Duncan pastor. In June of this year, he pleaded no contest to five counts of lewd or indecent acts to a child. He was sentenced to serve seven years in prison plus 18 years of probation. The Department of Corrections is investigating Hilliard's death. The state medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine how Hilliard died.

 

FEMA to Hold First-ever National Alert Test

A national alert will be sent out to every smart phone in the country this afternoon. FEMA is implementing its first ever national Wireless Emergency Alert System. The notice will come across your phone about 1:18 p.m. central standard time. It should be a message from President Trump indicating that it is a test. Grady County Emergency Manager Dale Thompson tells why the test may have been developed.

 

               

 

Smart phones should have the display "Presidential Alert" with a note saying "This is a test of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed." You won't be able to opt out of receiving such alerts. They will only be sent in the event of a major national emergency. A couple of minutes after that alert, another test of the Emergency Alert System, normally heard and seen on radio and TV station, will follow at 1:20 p.m.

Duplex Development Voted Down

A plan to build some new duplexes in the south part of Chickasha is denied by the city council. The panel voted 8-0 against a re-zoning measure for the proposed Shadow Valley development on Country Club Road between the Elks Lodge and a city water tower. Several individuals spoke against the development at last night's meeting, including Terrance Spain.

 

               

 

Also opposed to the project was Glen Thompson.

 

               

 

The development was also to include some single-family homes. We asked project developer Phil Hagen for comment but he did not want to answer any questions.

 

RV Park Expansion, Other Re-zoning Approved

The council did approve a re-zoning request in the 400 block of Almar Drive to expand the Pecan Grove RV Park. Approval was also given to re-zone an area in the 3600 block of South 16th for a pet boarding business, and a use-on-review to operate an RV park in the 700 block of North 13th Street was also approved.

 

FAA Grant to Help Build Airport Fence

The council also awarded a bid for a fencing project at the city's airport. The bid of nearly $95,000 was from Quality Fence Company of Walters, which was the lowest of five bids received. The cost is about $30,000 below the engineer's estimate. Much of the project will be paid for from a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration. The city's out-of-pocket expense for the project is only $22,000.

 

Council Hires Local Heat and Air Maintenance Vendor

The council also awarded a heating and air conditioning maintenance agreement to DeHart Heating and Air. The bid of nearly $54,000 was about $3,500 above the estimate, but it was the only bid received. The agreement calls for crews to make two service calls per year at city buildings.

 

New Police Car Purchased; Cruiser Repairs Authorized

The council also awarded a bid of $18,000 to Charles Allen Ford to purchase a new Ford Fusion for the police department. The vehicle replaces two that had been damaged. The city received an $18,000 insurance settlement for those vehicles. The panel waived competitive bidding and went through state contract to make emergency repairs to a police car that City Manager John Noblitt said needs to be back on the street as soon as possible. The car was damaged and became undriveable during a pursuit earlier this year. The contract awarded to Warfle Body Shop of Oklahoma City in the amount of $4,600, which is less the $1,000 insurance deductible.

 

Coffee with a Cop Tomorrow

Chickasha residents are encouraged to meet some of the city's police officers in a meet-and-greet. Coffee with a Cop will be held at Paradise Donuts at 601 S. 4^th tomorrow morning from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

The development is proposed to be on the north side of Country Club Road between the Elks Lodge and the city water tower. Despite the objections the planning commission narrowly gave it’s recommendation to the proposal in a 3-2 vote. The Planning Commission also recommended re-zoning  property in the 3600 block of South 16th Street to operate a pet hotel. The area in question is already zoned local commercial but the request is to change it to general commercial. The commission unanimously voted to recommend that change.

               

City Council to Review Other Re-zoning Proposals

Another re-zoning issue asks to re-zone property at 410 West Almar Street from single-family residential to a general commercial district. That measure also is being recommended for approval. The council will review a re-zoning request in the 700 block of North 13th Street to open an RV Park with residential office space. The area is little more than three acres which would be located close to some mobile home districts and it also borders a heavy industrial lot. The Planning Commission recommended those changes as well.

 

Alternate Members Suggested for Planning Commission

The council will also consider adding two alternate members to the Planning Commission. A couple of the group's meetings had to be canceled this summer because of a lack of a quorum.  Officials say delays can be costly to developers and residents and that having alternate members with voting powers would be helpful.

 

Strong Beer, Medical Marijuana Ordinances up for Review

The council is expected to update city ordinances in regards to the new state laws regarding the sale of alcoholic beverages. The state law changed today to allow retail outlets to sell six-point beer, and the revision would reflect the changes in city ordinances. The council is also to adopt new codes regarding the legalization of the sale of medical marijuana which also are effective at the state level starting today.

 

Lawsuit, Land Appraisal Part of Executive Session

In more council activity, the panel will go behind closed doors to discuss a lawsuit the city filed against Tom Word of Word Industries. The council is trying to re-coup a $250,000 economic development loan provided to Word and his company. He was going to use the money to move his operation from the Tulsa area to Chickasha but that move never occurred. A second issue in the executive session is to discuss the purchase, sale, or appraisal of property for economic development purposes.

               

Employee-of-Month, Festivals, Parades

The council is also expected to recognized Kay Perry with the Community Development Department as the city’s employee of the month, approve dates for the downtown Neewollah Festival  on October 31^st, the downtown Christmas parade on Thursday, December 6^th, and an agreement with the Festival of Light for the upcoming season.

 

Work Session Set Before Council Meeting

In addition to those issues, the council will hold a special work session prior to its meeting. They'll be discussing the sports complex and traffic signals. The work session will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the council meeting to get underway at 6:30 p.m. tonight at city hall.

 

Semi Crash Sends Driver to the Hospital

A semi crashes on a Grady County road over the weekend, sending the driver to the hospital. 37-year old Jose Resendiz of Purcell was taken to an Oklahoma City hospital where he was admitted in good condition. The accident happened about 9:00 a.m. Saturday southeast of the Naples Store, about a half-mile south of State Highway 39. The highway patrol reports that Resendiz was traveling south on a gravel road when the semi ran off the road, hit a fence and rolled. It was foggy when the accident happened.

Defendant In Baseball Player's Slaying is Out of Prison

He was one of four teenagers implicated in the shooting death of a college baseball player from Australia. James Edward Jr. is out of prison. Edward was one the teens charged with the death of Christopher Lane, who was gunned down while jogging near the home of his girlfriend in Duncan in the summer of 2013. Edward was 15 years old at the time. He was originally charged with first degree murder, but prosecutors lowered the charge to accessory to murder in exchange for his testimony against three others implicated in the shooting. Edward was sentenced to 15 years plus probation. He was released from prison this week, serving five of the 15 years. The others connected to the murder - Chancey Luna, Michael Jones, and John David Barnes - are still in prison.

               

School District's Estimate-of-Needs to be Reviewed

The estimate of needs for the Chickasha public school district will be reviewed during a special meeting of the Chickasha Board of Education on Monday. A notice for the meeting was sent to the Grady County Clerk Thursday and the agenda was posted on the doors of the school district's administration building Friday morning. The panel will discuss if the estimate of needs should be approved.  The meeting will start at 11:30 a.m. Monday and will be held at the administration building at 9th and Choctaw.

                               

Tremor Hits Near Dibble

An earthquake shakes parts of the Dibble area. The tremor hit a little after 2:00 a.m. Friday. The U.S. Geological Survey registered the quake at 2.9 on the Richter scale with the epicenter about 4 miles northeast of town. There were no reports of damage.

 

Rock Island Arts Festival Continues

The Rock Island Arts Festival resumes today. A lot of people took advantage of good weather yesterday to check out the artist booths, taste the offerings of the food truck vendors, and sit back and enjoy the live entertainment on two stages. The festival continues today and tomorrow at the Rock Island Railroad depot, downtown Chickasha. There is free admission and free parking.

 

Good Samaritan to Bid Adieu

One of Chickasha's Good Samaritans is moving on. Jay Barnes, who mows lawns for free for senior citizens and had held yard sales for fire victims and youth groups, will be heading back to be near his original home in the northeast part of the country. Barnes says his wife, who has been a professor at USAO for the last four years, recently accepted a job in Boston with Google. They'll be moving at the end of the year. Barnes tells KWTV News 9 that there's nothing like lending a hand to your fellow man.

               

Barnes list of clients for lawn mowing topped 100 this past summer, and he's had two lawn mowers donated to him. Barnes says he's working on getting someone to take over for him next summer.

 

PRCA Rodeo in Apache

If you're a rodeo fan, head to Apache this weekend for one of the final PRCA rodeos of the season. The Apache Stampede will feature a number of cowboys still trying to make the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. Apache's Bryson Sechrist will be in the mix. While he won't make the NFR this year, he's made over $200,000 in his pro rodeo career in tie-down roping.

Friday, Sept. 28th

 

One Critical after Pickup Hits Semi

A pickup driver is in critical condition this morning and three others were also taken to hospitals after their truck slams in to a semi. It happened just before 9:00 p.m. Thursday about a mile south of Anadarko on State Highway 8. 74-year old Margaret Burgess of Fletcher suffered the most serious injuries. She was pinned inside the pickup for about 30 minutes. After being freed she was taken by an air ambulance to an Oklahoma City hospital where she was admitted in critical condition. Two other passengers were also flown to Oklahoma City. 21-year old Mia Fisher and 18-year old Nathan Bennett, both also of Fletcher, were last in fair condition. Another passenger, an unidentified 16-year old boy, was taken to a Lawton hospital for observation. The driver of the semi, 27-year old Cody Knight of Pauls Valley, was not hurt. The highway patrol reports that Knight was backing the semi across the highway from a county road when the pickup hit the semi. The crash shut down traffic on the highway for more than an hour-and-a-half.

 

CV Tech Sets Program on Medical Marijuana at Work 

With the approval of medical marijuana in Oklahoma, workplace supervisors will need to be aware of employees who may be using it. Canadian Valley Technology Center will be offering a free seminar on the issue next month. The program will be led by the Crowe and Dunleavy law firm. They'll offer information on how to assess, document, and discipline employees, practical advice as to the documentation required for the discipline of impaired employees, and whether or not test workers. The one-hour program will be held on Tuesday, October 9th on the Chickasha campus of the technology center. Rock Island Arts Festival Opens

Downtown Chickasha will be rockin' the next three days with the Rock Island Arts Festival. Opening ceremonies kick off the event at 10:00 a.m. this morning at the historic Rock Island Railroad Depot on the east end of Chickasha Avenue. Artists from the region will have their work on display and for sale and some food trucks will be open. Live music starts at 4:00 p.m. today with Ron Blankenship on his steel drums. Children’s activities begin at 5:00 p.m. inside the depot. Love to Dance Studio performs at 5:00 p.m., and local artist Thomas Kenada takes the stage at 6:00 p.m. Local band Tim Brauer and First Look play at 7:00 p.m. Festival activities tomorrow begin at 10:00 a.m. The first ever Oklahoma Food Truck Championship will be held with 10 competitors seeking a $5,000 cash prize to the winner. The festival wraps up on Sunday, running from 12:00 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission and parking all weekend are free.

 

Anadarko Schedules Special Needs Students Livestock Show

In Anadarko, special needs students will be getting an opportunity to show livestock. The Anadarko schools livestock show team is preparing for this second annual show. 4H and FFA students will help participants show animals and help them explore the livestock industry. The show is set for Saturday, Oct. 13^th at the Caddo County fairgrounds in Anadarko. The show is free and open to Anadarko schools special needs students. More Energy Exploration OK'd in the SCOOP

Some new oil and gas drilling permits have been approved in this region. The Oklahoma Corporation Commission putting its stamp of approval on the locations in the South Central Oklahoma Oil Province (SCOOP). Overflow Energy LLC was issued a permit for Panther SWD just east of Amber. It's in Section 17 of Township 8 North, Range 6 West. Unit Petroleum Company was issued a permit to drill White 6, No. 3H west of Ninnekah, about a mile south of State Highway 277. It's in Section 31 of Township 6 North, Range 7 West. In Caddo County, Territory Resources was approved for Stidham No. 1-19 which is in Section 19 of Township 6 North, Range 10 West.

 

Dowtown Development Gains Support

The last few months we’ve been reporting about the efforts of business leaders wanting to see a resurgence of investment and activity in downtown Chickasha. It started a few years ago with multi-million dollar renovations of the main branch of the First National Bank and the former Chickasha Hotel. A number of events are scheduled in the downtown area over the next several months, starting with the Rock Island Arts Festival this weekend. In the month of October, there is the annual Ne'ewollah Festival, which is the costumed trick-or-treating event for Hallowe'en which will draw a big crowd. Phyllis Steelman said it reminds her of downtown many years ago.

 

               

 

Downtown will also host its annual lighted Christmas parade in December, and the community theater will have a holiday performance at the Washita Theater. Downtown merchants are also encouraging more shopping at their stores with some new discount cards that are now available. The cards are $10 each and can be used at selected merchants now through the end of next year.

 

Rock Island Arts Festival Opens Tomorrow

A final day of preparations today, ahead of this weekend's Rock Island Arts Festival. Months of planning by the Chickasha Area Arts Council will bring together dozens of regional artists, along with numerous performing artists putting their talents on display. This is the 10th year for the event, with opening ceremonies kicking off the three-day event tomorrow morning. There will be two stages for live acts this weekend. The main stage will be under the pavilion at the Mill Building of the historic railroad depot. The second stage will be just south of the depot area. Among the children's activities include pumpkin decorating, art classes, a sand pit to dig for prizes, face painting, inflatables, and the Chickasha Public Library will have several activities. Among the headlining bands, Tim Brauer and First Look on Friday night, and Travis Linville on Saturday night. On Saturday a couple of events will piggyback alongside of the festival, including the second annual Rock Island Ride, featuring bicycle rides of 8 to more than 60 miles, and the Together We Heel Walk, a domestic violence awareness event.

 

More Monster Trucks Headed to Chickasha

After a successful monster truck event at the Grady County Fairgrounds this summer, a second such event will be held which will feature a muddy twist. The Monster Truck and Mud Racing Nationals will include local residents who are encouraged to take part in a mud race. There will be races for street legal and modified trucks, jeeps, and SUVs. There is also a division for ATVs and UTVs, where individuals will race side-by-side in a 100 foot-long mud pit. The two-day event will be held Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 13^th and 14^th at the fairgrounds. Advanced tickets are now on sale at selected merchants or on-line at www.showclix.com or tickets will be available at the gate.

Counterfeit Money Found in Chickasha

Funny money is floating around Chickasha. Chickasha police say a number of merchants have turned in fake $100 bills within the last few days. On their Facebook page, police say the fake bills appear to be $10 bills that have been washed and re-printed. They may still have the "ten" printed on the security strip within the bill. Some comments on the post indicate that counterfeit pens used to check the bills don't work, because its technically legal tender paper stock the government uses. Another post says that clerks should look closely at the watermark to ensure the $100 bills are real.

 

BIA Offers Reward in Connection With Carnegie Homicide

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is offering a huge reward for information about the recent stabbing death of a Caddo County man. Investigators continue looking into the death of Byron "Subee" Tongkeamah, Jr. His body was found in an abandoned home in Carnegie the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 12th. An unidentified woman survived the knife attack. The agency is offering a $2,500 reward for information that leads to the successful projection of those responsible. Chickasha Street Improvements Underway

Your tax dollars are hard at work in Chickasha. A street improvement program approved by the city council earlier this year is underway. The city hired a Missouri company that is using a different process to make the upgrades. The company applies less than an inch of its product which is expected to extend the life of the streets. Gabe Beason is the spokesman for Donelson Construction.

 

               

 

Work crews have already made the improvements on 6th Street north of Choctaw, and on Chickasha Avenue, from 10th to 15th Streets. Other areas targeted for improvements are Missouri  Avenue from 4th to 9th Street; 9th Street from Grand Avenue to just south of Shannon Springs Park; Almar Drive, from 4th to 9th Street; Country Club Road from 16th Street to 29th Street; and 2nd Street from Minnesota Avenue north to Choctaw Avenue. Cost of the project is about $400,000.

 

Steer Wrestler Hopes to Qualify for NFR 

A Caddo County cowboy is looking forward to a trip to Las Vegas later this year. Apache's Blake Mindemann is pretty sure he's locked up a trip to the National Finals Rodeo for steer wrestling. To make sure, Mindemann will be one of the many cowboys on hand at the Apache Stampede PRCA Rodeo this weekend.

 

               

 

This is the last PRCA rodeo for cowboys to earn money to go to the NFR this year. The top 15 money winners qualify. The Apache Stampede runs Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults with children 6 and under, free.

 

Grady, Caddo County Wheat Growers to Get Relief

Wheat producers in both Grady and Caddo counties have been approved for wheat pasture losses from last winter. Mark Jackson with the Grady County Farm Service Agency-

 

               

 

Jackson says payments should be made within the next 30 days. He says producers who have already filed a notice-of-loss don’t need to do anything else to receive their payment.

Natural gas is up to $3.08 per million BTUs.

Jury Convicts Man of Killing Gracemont Couple

It was three years ago that a Gracemont man and his girlfriend were shot and killed at their home. Prince Robertson and Kayla Martin both died from multiple gunshot wounds. Last week, a Caddo County jury convicted D'veric Jessie of the crimes. Jessie himself called 9-1-1, saying he was acting in self-defense after he and Robertson got into an argument. District Attorney Jason Hicks and assistant DA Andrew Benedict prosecuted the case. In a statement, Hicks says he believes the jury's decision speaks volumes about how the community views senseless crimes like this one. The jury recommended a life sentence for the shooting death of Robertson and life without parole for the death of Martin. Formal sentencing is set for Dec. 12th.

 

Man Arrested, Charged in Claw Hammer Attack

A man is arrested for attacking his sister with a claw hammer. Chickasha police were called to a home in the 300 block of Ohio last Friday morning where a woman was bleeding from her head and arm. A bloody hammer was found. The woman was taken to the hospital where some of her wounds had to be stapled closed. Authorities were called back to the home several hours later to talk to the woman's brother. He told investigators he and his sister had been arguing, and that both had hammers and threatened to beat each other's heads in. The brother did have a wound on his right eye. Police arrested 35-year old Elvie Eugene Mandrell, Jr. Prosecutors have filed a felony count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon against him. During arraignment yesterday, Mandrell’s bond was set at $100,000.

 

Grandfather Posts Bond in Molestation Case

An Alex man is out of jail, after posting bond in connection with a molestation charge filed against him. 65-year old Billy G. Williamson was formally charged with felony sexual battery and providing alcohol to a minor in Grady County District Court yesterday. He was released after posting a $25,000 bond. An Alex police affidavit alleges Williamson made improper advances toward his 19-year old granddaughter. The teen ran to a neighbor's house clad only in a towel after alleging Williamson's lewd behavior. She also alleged he got her drunk on wine. If convicted, Williamson faces 5 to10 years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines.

 

 One Still Critical After Sunday Crash              

We now know the names of two people injured in a Sunday night traffic accident between Bray and Elmore City. One of the men, 56-year old Joseph Whitaker of Randlett, was still in critical condition in an Oklahoma City hospital after the car ran off the road and hit a tree. The driver of the car, 55-year old Jack Cesar, Jr. of Lindsay, was taken to a Duncan hospital where he was initially reported in critical condition. Authorities say he was treated and released.

 

Some Chickasha Water Bills May Have Errors

At Chickasha City Hall, officials say there are problems with some recent utility bills. They say there was an error in the billing processing system. Consumers whose bills have a due date of October 10^th will be receiving a corrected bill. Any payments that have been made will be applied to the corrected bill. Officials are apologizing for any inconvenience the situation has caused.

 

Community Meeting Set to Discuss Downtown Development

Yesterday, we told you about an OU under-graduate program called the Institute for Quality Communities which Chickasha is participating in. Officials with the Chickasha Economic Development Council say the group will host a come-and-go meeting for Chickasha residents next month to share their ideas about downtown. The students who are majoring in city planning and urban design will hold the meeting on Monday, Oct. 29th. It will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Grady County Fairgrounds.

 

'Truck Platooning' System Gets Interim Study

A system that digitally connects big rigs to help them travel close together is part of an interim study at the state capital. It's called "truck platooning," which digitally tethers convoys of two or more trucks. It's supposed to reduce drag and increase fuel efficiency, lessen highway congestion, and reduce traffic accidents. Oklahoma State Senator Darcy Jech, who serves Senate District 26 which includes Caddo County, chairs the senate transportation committee and requested the interim study. Jeck says several states have either adopted or are considering legislation which exempts trucks from maintaining a minimum following distance when tethered together.

County Man Accused of Sexual Assault

An Alex man is in jail accused of sexual battery. 65-year old Billy G. Williamson was arrested over the weekend. Alex police requested the arrest warrant following an investigation last week. No details about the investigation are available this morning. The website On Demand Court Records indicates the warrant was issued last Thursday, and Williamson was taken into custody by a Grady County Sheriff's deputy Sunday morning. Williamson is charged with sexual battery and furnishing alcohol to a person under 21 years old. Both are felonies.

 

Two People Critically Injured After Crash

Two people are hospitalized in critical condition after a traffic accident between Bray and Elmore City. The accident happened about 8:15 p.m. Sunday not far from the junction of State Highways 76 and 29. The names of the injured have not been released as troopers say relatives have not yet been notified. The highway patrol reports the vehicle was headed east on Highway 29 and failed to go around a curve, then left the highway and hit a tree. The passenger was pinned for about 45 minutes. The passenger was air-lifted to an Oklahoma City hospital while the driver was taken by ambulance to a Duncan hospital. Both suffered head, arm, leg, trunk, and internal injuries.

 

Semi Temporarily Blocks Highway 81 Traffic

A jack-knifed semi blocked traffic on U.S. Highway 81 just south of Pocasset for a short time last night. The Highway Patrol reported the accident happened about 7:45 p.m. Sunday near Salt Creek Casino. However, before a trooper arrived, a citizen and the truck driver managed to clear the roadway. The trooper sent to investigate said the roadway was clear when he arrived.

 

Leaders Look to Revitalize Downtown Chickasha

Chickasha is one of just two Oklahoma communities selected to take part in a unique program through the University of Oklahoma. It's called the Institute for Quality Communities. Cody Mosley is president of the Chickasha Economic Development Council and explains the work of the students involved in the program.

 

                

 

Officials are hoping to develop downtown into a tourist destination to include arts, entertainment, and restaurants, pointing to Guthrie and Broken Arrow as examples. In Broken Arrow, Mosley said there was about $65 million in private investment in its downtown.

 

Homecoming Set for National Guard Troops

Oklahoma National Guard troops will be coming home from a nearly year-long deployment to the Middle East. About 350 soldiers with the 1st Squadron, 180th Cavalry Regiment have been in Afghanistan. The squadron was participating in the Kabul Security Force, a NATO-led mission to train, advise, and assist local defense forces. The soldiers were also were part of a U.S.-led operation to train Afghan Army and police units. They are set to be back in the Sooner State tomorrow.

 

Rock Island Arts Festival Set this Weekend

The 10th annual Rock Island Arts Festival comes to downtown Chickasha this weekend. The three-day event features live music, lots of artists with items for sale from paintings, photography, jewelry, sculptures, and more. For the first time in the history of the event is the Oklahoma Food Truck Competition. There will be two stages for live entertainment all three days. Among the features bands will be Travis Linville, who will perform Saturday night. Local band Tim Brauer and First Look play Friday night, with other local artists like Shane Harris and Thomas Kenada performing. There's free admission and free parking for the event, which runs Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the Rock Island Railroad Depot downtown Chickasha.

Natural gas was up 7 1/2 percent for the week to $2.97 per million BTUs.
