Decision Expected Monday on Suspending

Chickasha School Classes if Teachers Walk Out 

The Chickasha Board of Education will decide on a proposal to give the school superintendent the approval to suspended classes if district teachers join a statewide walk-out in protest of low teacher salaries. It's one of several issues to be discussed in a special meeting of the school board on Monday night. The board will consider whether to give the superintendent the authority to suspend classes if it's believed that student safety would be endangered by the lack of adequate staff to provide supervision to students.  The school board is also expected to give the superintendent authority  to determine if sporting events and other extra-curricular activities would be held if a walk-out occurs. The board may also approve a resolution supporting teachers and encouraging state lawmakers to find a dedicated source of revenue for teacher salaries.

School Board Statement Expected on Resignations

The school board is also expected to release a public statement regarding the recent resignations of two employees who were initially suspended. Former technology director Greg Hackney and  bus barn administrative assistant Stacey Crutchfield were among several employees suspended in December. Officials never indicated why they were suspended. Both Hackney and Crutchfield were allowed to resign. The board is also expected to approve the resignation of Jason Finch, who was originally fired in December over allegations that he mistreated a special needs student. Finch was allowed to return to work after those allegations were unfounded.

Teachers Union Proposes its Version of Proposed Pay Hikes

Now, more about the proposed statewide teacher strike which is less than 10 days away. Officials with the Oklahoma Education Association have proposed its own plan for lawmakers to consider when it comes to teacher raises. OEA representatives say they would like to see a 5 percent gross production tax, and tax increases on cigarettes, alcohol, motor fuel, and wind generation. The plan also calls for a new hotel-motel tax and expanded casino games they say would raise nearly $905 million, which would give teachers a $10,000 pay increase over a three-year period.

OEA Plan Criticized by State Group

One group has already announced its opposition to the OEA plan. The Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs released a statement saying the OEA revenue road map leads to a dead end. The group said it hits vulnerable, low and middle-income working families and small business owners, and allows wind corporations and Native Americans tribes selling cigarettes to keep cash subsidies they don't need.

Youth Rodeo Continues at Grady County Fairgrounds

Youth rodeo competitors from across Oklahoma and neighboring states are in Chickasha this weekend looking to earn points that will qualify them for what might be considered the state playoffs in their respective events. It's the final stop of the regular season for both the Oklahoma high school and junior High school rodeo associations. About 250 competitors hope to turn in top times and scores. In the boys all-around, Austin Christensen of Laverne has a sizeable lead over Trevor Hale of Perryton, Texas.  In the girls all-around, Chaley Hext of Canadian, Texas leads Kathryn Todd of Tuttle by a mere 12 points although both should qualify for state. Both Hext and Todd are former national junior high all-around champions. Hext won last year, and Todd won in 2013. Also competing are former United States team roping champions Rowdy Jones of Tupelo and Braden Johnson of Fox. Oklahoma's junior high team won a national title in 2016 and the high school team last won a title in 2014. By the way, the state high school rodeo finals will be held in Chickasha for the first time later this spring. Events are being held both today and tomorrow at the Grady County Fairgrounds.

Wildfire Threat High Again Today

Local and state officials are warning that today will bring a threat of more wildfires. Much of extreme western Oklahoma is under a fire weather watch or red flag fire warning for the third straight day, as temperatures are forecast to be in the 80s, and winds of 30 miles per hour and higher are likely. Dozens of firefighters were called out to a huge wildfire in the Blanchard and Bridge Creek area yesterday that charred between 60 and 100 acres. Buddy Myers with the Grady County Fire Department said as many as 80 firefighters and 40 trucks from about a dozen departments helped to get things under control with minimal damage. A couple of storage sheds and at least two vehicles were damaged or destroyed, but no homes were damaged and there were no injuries. A controlled burn was said to have sparked that fire. The Red Cross set up at a staging area to provide water, energy drinks, and food for the fire crews. Reports that a large fire south of Velma in Stephens County burned about 1,200 acres around an area known as Convict Hill. Air support was brought in to fight that fire. There are some burn bans in far western Oklahoma, and Canadian County has a county-declared ban. Official are urging Oklahomans to postpone any burning until weather conditions improve. There are forecasts for rain late this weekend and into next week.

Crash Critically Injures One; Two Kids OK

A car crash near Anadarko critically injures a woman, with two small children suffering minor injuries. The accident happened about 8:45 p.m. Thursday, about a mile-and-a-half west of Anadarko on Park Road. 32-year-old Tearina Conner of Moore was air-lifted to an Oklahoma City hospital with leg, trunk, and internal injuries. An 8-year old boy and a 6-year old girl were taken to an Anadarko hospital where they were treated and released. The Highway Patrol reports that Conner was driving east on Park Road, when the car went off the road, hit a mail box, a culvert, a utility pole and a fence, then rolled an undetermined number of times.

High School, Jr. Hi Rodeo-ers to Compete in Chickasha

A big weekend in Chickasha, as about 250 youth will rodeo at the Grady County Fairgrounds. Members of the Oklahoma High School Rodeo Assocation, and the Oklahoma Junior High School Rodeo Assocation will compete for points, in hopes of qualifying for the state competitions in their respective groups later this year. Jeff Todd of Tuttle is the president of the High School rodeo association, and says they have memberships from three states.

Several former national all-round champions will be competing, and all three rodeo arenas at the fairgrounds will be used. Rodeo events start at 5 o'clock this afternoon and at 10 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free and open to the public.

Injured Police Officer, Family Headed to a Thunder Game

A special treat for a Chickasha police officer and his family. Sgt. Matt Schoolfield, and his wife and children will be courtside at tonight's Oklahoma City Thunder game. Schoolfield will also be recognized during the game as being a safety partner with one of the Thunder's corporate sponsors, Enable Midstream. Just last week, company officials were in Chickasha to personally present the honor to Schoolfield, and to give a contribution of $1,500 to the police department. Schoolfield suffered a serious arm injury after being shot last September.

State Rep Continues Effort to Repeal Energy Tax Cuts

State lawmakers continue their discussion of how to raise money to pay for teacher and state employee pay increases. Representative David Perryman, D-Chickasha has long supported a roll-back of tax cuts provided to oil and gas companies in recent years. In his weekly media column, Perryman writes that the tax cuts provided not only to energy companies - but also to high-wage earners over the last 10 years - have cost the state nearly $1.5 billion every year. He says that amount alone would pay for salary increases for teachers, school support employees, and state workers. Perryman also writes that a Republican gubernatorial candidate supports a tax hike on oil companies. He writes that State Auditor and Inspector Gary Jones says if Oklahoma citizens have to pay a 5 percent income tax rate, why shouldn't oil companies have to pay 5 percent gross production tax? Perryman suggests state lawmakers do what it takes to make Oklahoma better for its citizens.

Firefighters Contain Blaze in Dibble

A large fire in the Dibble area yesterday kept some families out of their homes. A 911 call alerted McClain County authorities to the fire about 4:00 p.m. Wednesday. Several homes were threatened but none were damaged. Officials went door-to door in an attempt to notify residents of the threat, but found no one at any of the homes. One resident who arrived while crews were beating back the fire was allowed to get his pets and a few valuables. Jesse Edgmon thought his house would go up in flames, but crews snuffed out the fire in time. Volunteers with the Dibble Fire Department were among some 20 units from five agencies called out to suppress the flames. They managed to get it under control within an hour and residents were allowed back in their homes about 6 p.m. About 150 acres of grassland was burned.

Handyman Accused of Sexting Teen

A Rush Springs man is accused of sexting messages to a 14-year old girl. 44-year old William Chad Puckett is faces two felony counts of lewd or indecent acts to a child. A warrant had been issued for Puckett's arrest last month, after it’s alleged he sent text messages that were sexual in nature to the middle school student. He was arrested earlier this week. Puckett is a friend of the girl's family, and had been at their home doing some remodeling work. While there, investigators alleged Puckett flirted with the girl and touched her buttocks. Prosecutors have also filed a charge of possession of a firearm after conviction against Puckett. He remains in jail in lieu of $110,000 bond.

Second Incest Suspect Pleads Guilty to Lesser Charge

The second woman accused of incest out of Stephens County has pleaded guilty to lesser charges in connection with the case. 26-year old Misty Spann is the daughter of Patricia Spann. They were married in Lawton two years ago. The daughter has pleaded guilty to a charge of attempting to obtain by false pretenses. She may not have to spend any time in jail. A judge issued her a 10-year deferred sentence, to include two-years of supervised probation. She originally pleaded guilty to the incest charge last November, where she also received a 10-year deferred sentence, but withdrew her guilty plea. Her mother, Patricia Spann, pleaded guilty to incest last week, and was sentenced to 10-years in prison with all but two years suspended. She will also have to register as a sex offender.

Filing Period Opens Soon for County, State, Fed Offices

In just a few weeks, candidates will be flocking to county and state election boards to file for public offices which will be up for election this fall. The three-day filing period will be Wednesday, April 11th through Friday, April 13th. Grady County offices up for election include County Commissioner District 1, currently held by Windell Hardy and County Commissioner District Three, currently held by Ralph Beard. The office of county treasurer, currently held by Robin Burton, and county assessor, currently held by Bari Firestone are also up for election. State offices up for election include all state representatives. Also this year, the top two offices in state government will be on the ballot, those of governor and lieutenant governor.

Donation Completes Fence at Verden Separate School

The efforts of a Chickasha woman who is preserving African-American history in the region got an unexpected gift this week. Some new electronic security gates were installed to complete a metal fence that surrounds the Verden Separate School. The school was the first phase of a project started by local historian Loretta Jackson. The funding for the gates provided by an organization called Tribal Administrative Services. Kellie Lewis of Chickasha is a consultant with the group.

The gates are solar-powered, and can be put on a timer. Jackson was ecstatic when she found out about the project, and is thankful for Lewis' help.

Veteran County Clerk Deputy to Retire

A long-time deputy with the Grady County Clerk’s office is retiring. Georgia Ferrell has been the county's purchasing agent for many years. It's a very detailed job with many responsibilities, according to County Clerk Sharon Shoemake. It includes searching for vendors and equipment items, maintaining accurate inventory records, and making sure offices follow competitive bidding laws. A retirement celebration to thank Ferrell for her 20 years of service will be held Friday, March 30th from  2:00 p.m to 3:30 p.m. inside Courtroom No. 1 at the courthouse.

State School Sup't Asks for OSBI Probe of Chix Schools              

The State Department of Education is calling for the OSBI to investigate grade tampering and other allegations within Chickasha Public Schools. State Superintendent Joy Hoffmeister has asked the OSBI to conduct a criminal investigation into allegations of grade-tampering and changing attendance records. A statement posted on the state department of education's website discusses the agency's recent investigation into the allegations. Brad Clark is an attorney for the state agency.

State officials also found high levels of school personnel log-ins. Hoffmeister said the allegations are extremely troubling, and require the OSBI to look into them. She said the integrity of student records must never be compromised, and  academic honesty is of paramount importance. She said the school district's lack of oversight appears particularly disturbing, and the consequences may be far-reaching and affect many students and families. A statement released from Chickasha schools says they welcome a criminal investigation by the OSBI or the district attorney. The school statement said neither Hoffmeister nor anyone from her office had been in recent contact with them,and it was unclear how Hoffmeister reached her conclusion.

One Dead in Cyril Crash

A deadly car crash in Cyril last night. The highway patrol repots a Lawton woman died when her car ran off the road and hit a culvert. 26-year old Devon Manigault died in the crash that happened about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of State Highway 19 and US Highway 277. The trooper investigating the crash says Manigault was traveling east on Highway 19 and failed to stop at a stop sign. The car went airborne before hitting the culvert.

Update: Man Accused of Killing his Father Surrenders

Now an update to the story we aired yesterday, about a man wanted for killing his father. 37-year old James Kyle Brooks is in custody, after Stephens County officials issued a warrant for his arrest. Reports indicate that Brooks surrendered to police in Newcastle last Friday and that he is now in the Stephens County Jail. Brooks was wanted for the August, 2012 shooting death of his father, Timothy Brooks, which occurred in Marlow. Investigators say James Brooks shot and killed his father, and staged the home to make his father's death appear to be a suicide. Investigators also say James Brooks had taken out a half-million dollar life insurance policy on his father.

12-year old Leads Police on Pursuit

Law enforcement groups are surprised to find out who was at the wheel of a high-speed pursuit in the Tuttle area yesterday. Reports indicate that a 12-year old boy led authorities on a chase that topped 100 miles per hour. State troopers and police from Tuttle and Mustang were involved. The pursuit began about 2:00 p.m. Tuesday in Mustang when police got a call about an erratic SUV driver. The chase went south on Highway 4 through Tuttle and ended a few minutes later near the junction of Highway 4 and the H.E. Bailey Turnpike. Authorities say the SUV had been stolen out of Oklahoma City.

Drought-affected Producers May Apply for Fed Loans

Farmers and ranchers who have lost crops or livestock because of the drought may be eligible for emergency loans from the federal government. Here is Mark Jackson with the Grady County Farm Service Agency.

Jackson said the amount of the loan will be based on the dollar amount of the actual loss. Loan applications for producers in both Grady and Caddo counties are being processed in the Anadarko FSA office.

Man Accused of Killing His Dad; Saying it was Suicide

A bizarre story out of Stephens County, where authorities are looking for a man they say shot and killed his father, then tried to make his death look like a suicide. Authorities have issued an arrest warrant for 37-year old James Kyle Brooks of Blanchard, who is charged with murder in Stephens County. Brooks is accused in the 2012 death of Timothy Brooks, who was found dead in his Marlow home. Investigators allege that James Brooks had taken out a $500,000 life insurance policy on his father without his knowledge.

Lots of Interest Shown in Storm Shelter Rebate Plan

Nearly 170 people have shown interest in a plan that may help them purchase and install storm shelters. Grady County Emergency Management Agency Director Dale Thompson was happy with last week's turnout of applicants interested in obtaining a rebate from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Thompson said there were 93 applications taken in Chickasha, 55 in Tuttle, and 21 in Rush Springs in meetings last week. Thompson was hoping for about 225 applicants, but said there is still time for anyone interested in the program to submit documents. Applications must be in by next Friday, March 30th, then officials will spend a couple of months certifying the applications before actually applying for the FEMA grant. Thompson is hoping to get word by mid-July that the county has been approved. For information, see the Grady County Emergency Management Facebook page or call 405-222-2339.

Loans Available for Some Businesses Impacted by Drought

Some small businesses in Oklahoma and nearby states which have suffered losses of income because of the drought are now eligible to apply for federal disaster loans. The U.S. Small Business Administration says these economic injury disaster loans can be used to offset losses that began Nov. 15, 2017. The loans are available to businesses in a number of primary Oklahoma counties which include Grady, Caddo, Comanche, Stephens, Garvin, McClain, and Canadian counties. Small businesses in Oklahoma and Cleveland counties are also eligible as they are in neighboring counties. A press release from the agency indicates the loans are available to non-farm businesses, agriculture co-ops, and nurseries, however are not for businesses primarily engaged in farming and ranching. Officials say eligibility covers the economic impacts on businesses which are dependent on the farmers and ranchers who have suffered production losses due to drought. Loans of up to $2 million are available for a term of up to 30 years, and have an interest rate of just under 3.4 percent for businesses and 2.5 percent for private, non-profit groups. Applications can be made on-line at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela      Deadline to apply is Nov. 8th.

Renovations Complete on Historic USAO Building

A long-empty building at USAO will be open this fall to house students who will be attending the university. Robertson Hall, which has been closed since 1984, has been undergoing renovations for nearly a year. That work is now complete, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held early next month. Contractors had to follow some strict guidelines while making repairs, because the campus is in an area designated as a National Historic District, and the building had to be restored largely to its original condition. The work was financed through USAO capital funds and a private gift through the USAO Foundation. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3rd.

Easter Egg-dyeing Tips

Easter is less than two weeks away. If you plan on decorating or dying Easter eggs for the kids, Susan Routh with Grady County OSU Extension recommends getting them in the next few days.

Routh said eggs should be refrigerated at least a week before you boil  them. After boiling, she says to let them cool before you dye them. That will prevent the eggs from absorbing any dye.

Deadly Crash Involves Semi, Motorcycle

U.S. Highway 81 just south of Chickasha was shut down for a couple of hours Sunday night, when a motorcycle rider dies after being hit by a semi. 35-year old Jason Reagor of Arkansas City, Kansas died in the crash. It happened about 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 81 and Pikes Peak Road. The state trooper investigating the accident reports that Reagor was southbound on the highway and had slowed to turn west. He was hit from behind by a semi driven by 42-year old Allen Rainey of Wichita, Kansas. Rainey was not injured. The crash remains under investigation.

Minco Schools Change Calendar for Teacher Pay Raise Issue

School districts across the state are making plans for a proposed teacher strike on April 2nd. Teachers are threatening a walk-out unless state lawmakers come up with a plan to increase teacher pay. In Minco, school superintendent Kevin Sims says the board of education last week passed a resolution supporting raises for teachers, and also took action to allow its instructors to be part of a rally at the state capital.

Sims says its the most stressful period he's had to deal with in his 25 years as a school administrator.

Senator Concerned About Inaction on Teacher Pay Hikes

One state senator says he's frustrated that lawmakers can't come up with a teacher pay raise. Sen. Darcy Jech, R-Kingfisher says he was hopeful the senate had enough bi-partisan support to pass the plan last week, which would have provided a 12.7 percent pay hike for teachers. In a press release, Jech says he hopes lawmakers can still find common ground, and cooperate on a compromise that will provide teachers and state employees a long-overdue pay raise. He says they are committed to continue to work toward a solution that will deliver a responsibly-funded pay raise.

Reinforcements in Place Due to Wildfire Threat

While parts of Oklahoma did get a little rain yesterday, it wasn't enough to diminish the threat of wildfires, particularly in the parched western sections. Fire danger runs high again today, with west winds gusting to 40 miles per hour. Officials with the state forestry service are calling in reinforcements to help if any fires erupt in the next few days. The agency has activated the South Central Forest Fire Compact, which will bring in resources from Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Kentucky. Federal and state fire-fighting aircraft and county wildland task forces are also on standby if needed. Additional fire trucks, bulldozers, and personnel are being mobilized into two suppression groups and pre-positioned in areas under the most severe fire threat.

Truckers Get Temporary Delay with Hours-of-Service Rule

Livestock haulers have another three months before any changes will be made regarding the Electronic Logging Device mandate. The U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration says it will be mid-June before any changes are considered for the hours-of-service rule. Shiann Burns with Grady County OSU Extension says one agriculture group is against the proposed change.

Burns said the beef board will continue its work against the proposed changes.

Texas Fugitive, Girlfriend Face Local Charges

We have an update to a story about the recent arrests of a Texas fugitive and his girlfriend at a Chickasha home. Robin Sean Davis and Angela Danielle Keller are now facing local charges in connection with the arrests. Davis and Keller were taken into custody after a tactical team made up of U.S. Marshals, highway patrol troopers and other law enforcement got word that the two were in Chickasha. Both were arrested without incident. Davis, who lists a Chickasha address, was wanted out of Cleburne, Texas for firearms charges. He's been charged in Grady County District Court with a felony of having a firearm after conviction, and a misdemeanor count of drug possession. Court documents indicate investigators found three loaded  weapons in the home, a partially-loaded magazine for a semi-automatic rifle, a number shotgun shells and a couple of bags of ammunition.  Court documents also indicate that Davis was convicted of firearms and drug charges out of El Reno in 2005. Davis could be sentenced to life in prison if convicted on the most recent charges. He remains in jail in lieu of $30,000 bond. There's no word on his possible extradition to face charges in Texas. Keller, who lists a Cache address, is facing a felony count of harboring a fugitive and having firearms after conviction, and a misdemeanor for drug possession. She was convicted in Stephens County for drug possession in 2015. She remains in jail in lieu of $75,000 bond. She could also be sentenced to life in prison if convicted. Both are to announce their attorneys on March 28^th with preliminary hearing conferences set April 4th.

 

New State Representative Sworn In

The newest member of the State House of Representatives takes his oath of office. Republican Brad Boles was sworn in to office at the state capital yesterday. He says he knows he’ll be facing some challenges.

 

                

 

The Marlow mayor won a special election for House District 51 last week. The region includes parts of Chickasha and eastern Grady County, as well as Marlow and parts of northern and eastern Stephens County. Boles takes the post previously held by Chickasha's Scott Biggs.

 

Pre-War Swap Meet Concludes Today

Antique auto enthusiasts from all over the world are in Chickasha this week, sifting through boxes of old car and truck parts, and sharing their favorite stories about their hobbies. Simply called the Pre-War Swap Meet, collectors and restorers come here every year, knowing this is one of the few swap meets anywhere with items specifically for the very early years of transportation, from 1890 through 1945. Gary Griffin from Oklahoma City has been a vendor at the pre-war swap meet since it started in 1980, and tells where he finds a lot of his items.

 

                

 

A number of fully-restored antiques will be bought and sold at the swap meet. More than 300 vendors are on hand at the event being held at the Grady County Fairgrounds. There's free admission. Another swap meet, which will feature any and all cars and trucks, will be in Duncan at the Stephens County Fairgrounds next weekend.

 

Shriner's Circus Headed to OKC; Tickets Available in Chix

It's almost time for the Shriner's Circus. It will be held in Oklahoma City March 22^nd through 25^th at the the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds.  It's a great family entertainment activity, and most importantly, the proceeds benefit the Shriner's Hospital, which treats children suffering from debilitating illnesses for free. Wildfires Erupt in Region

Wind-whipped fires kept firefighters out for several hours in central Oklahoma yesterday. One was north of Alex, another west of El Reno around Calumet, and one in the Oklahoma City area. In Grady County, firefighters were summoned to the blaze that started five miles north of Alex about 2:00 p.m. Volunteer firefighters from the Naples, Bradley, Pioneer, Friend, Farwell, and Ninnekah departments beat back the flames. Grady County Fire Department spokesman Buddy Myers says no structures were lost. The fire threat will be extremely high again today for most of the state. Afternoon highs are expected to be near 80 and accompanied by very windy and dry conditions. The National Weather Service says critical fire weather conditions are expected starting about 11 o'clock this morning and running through 8 o'clock tonight. The agency says fire risk will also be high through the weekend and into the middle of next week.

 

Update on Officer-Involved Shooting

A Grady County deputy is on administrative leave following an officer-involved shooting. The shooting occurred at a Chickasha home late Wednesday night, and a man was air-lifted to an Oklahoma City hospital. His condition is not known. Sheriff Jim Weir tells us that two deputies went to serve a felony warrant at the home. The man they were looking for, Demon Reed, is reported to have gotten into his vehicle and drove down an alley. As one deputy tried to flag him down, Reed is alleged to have driven his vehicle at deputy, who fired several rounds and struck Reed at least one time. The deputy was not injured. The OSBI is heading up the investigation and will turn information over to the district attorney who will determine if the shooting was justified.

 

Injured Chix Police Officer Honored; Continues Recovery

Chickasha Police Sgt. Matt Schoolfield continues his recovery after being shot while on duty last fall. Schoolfield was honored by the Oklahoma City Thunder and corporate partner Enable Midstream yesterday in a ceremony at the police department. The company named Schoolfield a Safety Partner, and presented the Chickasha Police Department with a $1,500 check. Schoolfield said he's been blessed with all the support he's had since his injury, and has an optimistic outlook despite what doctors have told him.

 

                

 

Schoolfield said doctors say he may only regain 25 percent use of his right arm.

GOP Lt. Gov. Candidate Visits Chickasha

Matt Pinnell, one of three announced Republican candidates running for Lt. Governor this year, spent some time in Chickasha yesterday. He's from the Tulsa area, and was the national state party director for the Republican National Committee, where he said he helped Donald Trump win the presidential election in 2016. Pinnell says he'll use his experience in marketing to help promote the state.

 

                

 

Pinnell also worked with Oklahoma U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe, former U.S. Senator Jim Coburn, and former state attorney general Scott Pruitt.

BREAKING - One Injured in Officer-involved Shooting

The OSBI is investigating an officer-involved shooting in that occurred in Chickasha last night. Very little is known about the shooting right now. Chickasha Police confirmed that a Grady County Deputy Sheriff was involved. The shooting happened in a residential area near 6^th and Tennessee Avenue between 11:00 p.m. and midnight.  A police spokesman said one person was taken to the hospital, but it’s not known if it is the deputy, and it wasn't clear how serious the injuries were. Woman's Death Ruled a Homicide

The death of a Caddo County woman has been ruled a homicide. A report from the state medical examiner’s office indicates Cindy Kaudlekaule died from blunt force trauma and asphyxiation. The body of the 30-year old Carnegie woman was found along a rural county road between Carnegie and Ft. Cobb last October. Officials did arrest a person of interest in connection with Kaudlekaule's death. 32-year old Byron Yeahquo was arrested in November for an un-related warrant, but has not been charged.

 

CHS Students Join National Walk-out

About 100 Chickasha High School students walked out of classes yesterday, to be part of a national effort supporting tighter gun control laws. The national walkout was held on the one-month anniversary of a tragic school shooting in Florida. Students were out of class for 17 minutes, which was one minute for every person who died in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman High School in Parkland, Florida.

 

Newest Chix School Board Member Takes Oath

The newest member of the Chickasha Board of Education has taken his seat. Zack McGill was sworn in to office during this week's school board meeting. McGill won a five-year term on the board, in a landslide victory over incumbent Julie Badgett-Sinn last month. The school board approved the resignation of Superintendent Emeritus Dave Cash, which was effective immediately. Cash had been on a leave of absence since last fall. Officials say his resignation ends any speculation that Cash may return to the district. In other action, the school board approved some minor contract revisions with interim superintendent Jack Herron, whose contract runs through June 30th.

 

Congo Creek Cleanout Underway

City of Chickasha work crews are spending a couple of weeks cleaning out a tree-lined creek in hopes of minimizing occasional flooding that occurs. The area being cleaned out is about a half-mile section of Congo Creek, starting in the 500 block of Grand Avenue and running behind the Southland Shopping Center to 4^th and Tennessee Ave. Public Works Director Rob Camp says it's a project they started before, but ran into some difficulties.

 

                

 

Camp says the project won't completely solve the flooding issues that occur in the shopping center during periods of heavy rainfall, but hopes it will ease it somewhat. The project is expected to take up to three weeks.

 

Pre-War Swap Meet About to Open

Antique auto enthusiasts from around the world are heading to Chickasha this weekend for the 28th annual pre-war swap meet. Pre-War is prior to World War II. The event is considered by many to the world's largest swap meet of its kind, which focuses on the first 50 years of motorized transportation. Lyndon and Margaret Moore are from the Bootheel region of southeast Missouri, and are already here looking for some early bargains. It's the second year for them to be here. Mr. Moore says he's just looking to buy some things.

 

                

 

The meet was started in 1990 by the late Joe Ersland, and is continued by his son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Susie Ersland. More than 350 vendors will be both inside and out at the Grady County Fairgrounds. Vendors can begin setting up this afternoon, with the actual swap meet set for Friday and Saturday. Admission is free.

House Fire Blamed on Unattended Space Heater

Thousands of dollars in damage occurs when fire races through a Chickasha home. Firefighters were dispatched to 520 South 2nd Street about 8 p.m. Tuesday. Thankfully, no one was home when the fire started. Crews spent about an hour knocking down the flames. Fire Chief Brian Zalewski estimated  damage at $30,000. Investigators traced the cause of the blaze to electric space heaters placed too close to combustible materials.

 

Insurance Commish Schedules Fraud Prevention Workshops

Insurance scams cost Americans millions of dollars every year and many times the victims are senior citizens. The Oklahoma Insurance Department will be holding some workshops throughout the state over the next several weeks to offer tips to keep seniors from falling for scams. Rochelle Covington with the state insurance department says representatives of other state agencies will also be on hand.

 

                

 

The workshops will cover Medicare Fraud, insurance fraud, investment fraud, and banking fraud. Upcoming workshops will be Wednesday, March 28th at the Tower Hotel in Oklahoma City; Wednesday, April 25^th at Cameron University in Lawton; and Thursday, April 26^th at Embassy Suites in Norman. Woman Pleads Guilty to Incest

A Stephens County woman who pleaded guilty to incest is going to prison. 45-year old Patricia Spann admitted to marrying her daughter. Duncan police found out about the marriage from Department of Human Services. The agency learned of the marriage while checking on the welfare of a child. Spann was sentenced to two years in prison and eight months’ probation. She will have to register as a sex offender. Spann was also order to pay nearly $3,000 in fines and fees. The incest case against the daughter, Misty Velvet Dawn Spann, is set for a plea next week.

 

Occupational Therapy Ass't Open House Set in Ft. Cobb

The number of career opportunities in the health care field continues to grow. Among the fastest growing sectors is that of Occupational Therapy Assistant. One of the state's leading programs to train individuals in that field is at Caddo Kiowa Technology Center in Ft. Cobb. The program will hold an open house of its OTA program later this month. The training includes work in the classroom and clinical experience. Students who finish the program earn an Associate’s Degree in applied science. State Wheat Crop Reaches Critical Stage

Oklahoma's wheat crop could use some rain as the prime growing season is just getting underway. But producers could face other issues, including temperatures that may hinder plant development. Shiann Burns with Grady County OSU extension points to some OSU research.

 

                

 

The cool temps are what trigger plant development. While wheat will still grow if it doesn’t go through the vernalization process, it will not joint or produce a seed head.

 

CHS FFA'er Shows No. 2-Breed Champ at OYE

A Chickasha FFA student enjoys some success at the Oklahoma Youth Expo. Clay Grossnicklaus exhibited the reserve breed champion Simmental at OYE this week. “Waffles” was second best in the class which featured nearly 90 animals. The Oklahoma Youth Expo runs through Friday.

Chickasha School Superintendent to Resign

Dave Cash is resigning as superintendent of Chickasha Public Schools. The local board of education is expected to formally accept his resignation when the panel meets tonight. The resignation is effective today. Cash officially holds the title of Superintendent Emeritus. He was allowed to take a leave of absence last fall, to work with the company that promotes the Personalized Learning Curriculum he brought to the district two years ago. He was still being paid about $2,500 a month to serve as a consultant with the district. In January, the school board hired Jack Herron to serve as the district's long-term interim-superintendent, and stripped the $2,500 per month stipend being paid to Cash. The school board is also to consider a change to its contract with Herron, which runs through June 30th. The panel will go behind closed doors to discuss the proposed changes.  It's not clear what those might be. The school board meets at 6:30 tonight at the school administration building.

 

Food Truck, Food Handler Guidelines up for Discussion

Proposed new guidelines for food truck operators in the City of Chickasha will be reviewed by the city's Planning Commission today. The group will also consider new rules for food handlers. Public hearings on the proposals were held last month with no comments made on either. Also in today’s meeting is a public hearing regarding the placement of a mobile in a residential area on a tract of land greater than three acres. A second public hearing will be held to consider a use-on-review for a resident who wants to build an accessory building at 407 Flanders, which is larger than the maximum size allowed.

 

Man Survives Stabbing Attack

An Anadarko man is lucky to be alive after being stabbed more than a dozen times. He was fortunate to find a police officer washing his vehicle at a car wash near where the stabbing occurred. KFOR-TV reports the attack occurred late Friday night. Anadarko Police Lt. James Howard said the victim had significant wounds to his hands which were considered to be defensive wounds. Investigators followed a trail of blood which led them to a home where the stabbing is believed to have taken place. The report indicates they found the alleged weapon, a box blade, which had been taken apart. The blade was found in a toilet, and another part in the dishwasher. It's reported a suspect has surrendered to police, who claims the attack was self-defense. He said  the victim entered his home uninvited and intoxicated. Investigators said the suspect didn't appear to have suffered any injuries.

 

Apache Teen Advances on "American Idol"

A Caddo County teenager is headed to Hollywood. 17-year old Rissa Watson of Apache passed her audition in the new season of ABC's American Idol which was televised last night.  Watson nailed her performance of Adele's "When We Were Young."

 

                

 

Judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie all voted for Watson to go to Hollywood for the next round of competition.

 

Class for Divorcing Parents Designed with Kids in Mind

One of the missions of OSU Extension's Family and Consumer Sciences programs is to provide families with information on effective parenting techniques. Many times there are parenting conflicts among divorcing moms and dads. Susan Routh with Grady County OSU Extension says one of their programs is designed to help make sure the children are the main priority

USAO, Tech Centers Helpful to Expanding Companies

Among the top things companies look for when they consider expanding to new areas is the available workforce, and if employees will be able to perform the work required. Christy Elkins with Chickasha's Economic Development Council says USAO and the Canadian Valley Technology Center play key roles helping firms find qualified workers. Elkins says Optum Energy, a Houston-based company which expanded to the area last year, is just one of just several firms taking advantage of what the educational institutions offer.

 

                

 

Elkins says Optum Energy invested $50 million in the Chickasha community when it moved in to the former Delta Faucet plant last year. The company manufactures products that move crude oil more quickly through pipelines.

 

Community Theatre Upgrades Continue

About $200,000 in upgrades have been made at the historic Washita Theatre in downtown Chickasha over the last couple of years. It is now home of the Chickasha Community Theatre, a non-profit group which owns the building. A fire sprinkler system was installed last year, and it now has a new roof, thanks to generous patrons and numerous contributions. Susan Fagalde with the theatre says they are getting ready to start letting other groups to use the building.

 

                

 

Fagalde says the group now needs to repair the ceiling and make bathrooms accessible to disabled patrons. Some upcoming events at the theatre include an adult prom and a summer production of the Wizard of Oz.

 

Lt Dan Band to Perform at Ft. Sill Celebration

Actor Gary Sinise, known for his support of U.S. servicemen and women, will be back in the region next month to perform a free concert. Sinise and his Lt. Dan Band will perform at the Ft. Sill polo grounds next month. Sinise, known for his role as Lt. Dan Taylor in movie Forrest Gump, performs free concerts at military installations worldwide. Next month's concert will be his second show at Ft Sill. He and his band performed there two years ago. The concerts honor active-duty soldiers as well as veterans and first responders. The concert is part of a big weekend at Ft. Sill on April 6th and 7th, to celebrate the Henry Post Army Airfield's Centennial. The concert is Friday night, April 6th. Chris Bullard and Stolen Silver will open for the Lt. Dan Band. Then on Saturday, Ft. Sill will hold an air show which will feature numerous aircraft, including a couple of World War II era planes.

 

If Teachers Strike, Food Bank to Help Affected Children

While Oklahoma teachers threaten to strike if state lawmakers don't act on teacher pay hikes, another group is working to make sure children will get the nutrition they need should classes not be held. The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma indicates it will work to pack and distribute family boxes of food throughout areas impacted by a teacher walkout. The Regional Food Bank serves schools in Grady, Caddo, and more than 50 other counties in central and western Oklahoma. In a press release, Regional Food Bank officials say if there is not a teacher walkout and schools do not close, donations will be used to support existing Food for Kids programs, which serves some 44,000 children every year. Contributions may be made on-line on the Regional Food Bank Website: www.regionalfoodbank.org/supportstudents

Mother, Son Escape House Fire

Fire at a Chickasha home Friday afternoon, where a young mother and her four-year old son were inside. Thankfully, neither were injured, though the home suffered significant damage. The fire at 1424 S. 12th started just before 2 p.m. Friday. Kristan Kirkland and her son Lucas were watching TV when she noticed it. Kirkland said:

The dog is a one-year old pug which also wasn't hurt. Kirkland and her boyfriend Brett Stringfellow were renting the one-story wood-frame home, and had only lived there about three months. Stringfellow was at work when the fire started. Chickasha Fire Chief Brian Zalewski said the cause of the fire was due to a heat lamp placed too close to a rabbit cage. It wasn't known if any animals died. Estimated damage is about $20,000 - mainly to the exterior and attic of the home. We have video of the fire on our Facebook page.

Texas Fugitive Taken Down by Task Force

A fugitive from Texas is behind bars following his arrest at a Chickasha home. A tactical team involving about 50 law enforcement officials converged on a home at 1628 W. Chickasha Avenue Thursday night, and arrested 35-year old Robin Sean Davis.  The tactical team included U.S. marshals, the highway patrol, Grady County Sheriff's deputies and Chickasha police. U.S. Marshal’s spokesman Callen Stephens said Davis surrendered without incident. Stephens said Davis was wanted on firearms charges out of Cleburne, Texas. Texas officials asked for Oklahoma assistance after learning Davis was in the Sooner State. It wasn’t known how long Davis had been in Chickasha. A search warrant for the home was issued, and Stephens said they did find weapons, but didn't say how many or what type. Davis bond on the Texas charges is $1 million. Also arrested was Davis' girlfriend, 35-year old Angela Danielle Keller on complaints of harboring a fugitive. Both Davis and Keller were both booked into the Grady County Jail.

Update on Fatal Stabbing at Chickasha Home

A Chickasha woman who authorities say was stabbed in the neck by her step-father is out of the hospital. Jessica Marie Hayes was air-lifted to an Oklahoma City hospital after last weekend's violent attack, where the suspect is also accused of the stabbing death of his wife, Lisa Delira, who is also Hayes’ mother. The suspect, Jesus Gaspar Delira, was formally charged with first degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the attacks. Bond was denied. Delira is also on hold for immigration officials. A probable cause affidavit filed by the OSBI indicates Hayes told investigators she was at the home doing laundry in the garage with her mom. Hayes became angry when the suspect was being rough with her mother. The document indicates that Delira and her mom went inside the house, and that he returned to the garage alone and stabbed Hayes. She did not know what had happened to her mother. Delira said that he didn't get along with his step-daughter. He told the OSBI that he and Hayes got into an argument, and he picked up a knife and swung at her, but Mrs. Delira got in the way. Jesus Delira is to be back in court later this month to announce his attorney, and a preliminary hearing conference is scheduled for April 4th.

Youth Rodeo Set this Weekend

A youth rodeo competition is being held this weekend at the Grady County Fairgrounds. The Central Oklahoma Little Britches Rodeo Association is for kids as young as five-years old. Teens take part in events like you see in a big-time rodeo, like bull riding, steer wrestling, and calf roping. The youngsters have events that include barrel racing; flag racing; pole bending, and goat tying. Events are being held both Saturday and Sunday. This is the eighth of nine stops for the association, which holds monthly competitions at different locations from August through March. The final stop will be the finals in Anadarko in June.

Firefighters Save Homes Threatened by Grass Fire

That huge grass fire just southwest of Chickasha Thursday afternoon threatened dozens of homes, and HSI Sensing. About 60 fire fighters from about a dozen departments were summoned to beat back the flames, and managed to get things under control with no property damage. The fire burned right up to a mobile home where Delbert Akins and his family lives. His granddaughter Caitlyn lives next door, and she has a three-month only baby. Their homes were among several that were evacuated, and residents in the Harbors and University Heights Additions were asked to voluntarily evacuate. The fire was about 1/4 mile wide and 1 1/2 miles long at one point. Buddy Myers with the Grady County Fire Department estimates it burned about 160 acres. Myers said the fire started when a brush fire got out of control. We have a video of part of the fire on our Facebook page.

One Hurt in Ninnekah Crash

One man is taken to the hospital after a traffic accident in Ninnekah last night. It happened about 6:00 p.m. just south of U.S. Highways 81 and 277. Grady County Fire Department spokeman Buddy Myers was at that accident as well as the Chickasha fire earlier. A car had pulled out onto Highway 81 and was  hit in the driver's side by a southbound one-ton truck. The unidentified driver of the car was taken to the hospital with undetermined injuries. That was the second accident within about 12 hours near that intersection. Two pick-ups collided in that area about 5:30 a.m. Thursday.

Injured Officer to be Honored By OKC Thunder

A Chickasha police officer injured in a shootout last fall will be recognized by the Oklahoma City Thunder and one of its corporate partners. Sgt. Matthew Schoolfield will be awarded with a safety partner award, and will also be recognized at an Oklahoma CityThunder basketball game. Schoolfield suffered a serious arm injury after being shot while serving a search warrant last September. On Thursday, March 15^th, Schoolfield will be presented the Enable Midstream Safety Partner award at the Chickasha Police Department. The Thunder girls and Rumble the Bison will be on hand for that. Enable will also present a donation to the police department. Asst. Chickasha Police Chief G.G. Music also said Schoolfield will  be honored during the Oklahoma City Thunder game vs. the Miami Heat on Friday, March 23rd.

Southern Plains Partners with Spine Hospital

People suffering from serious back pain now don't have to go to Oklahoma City for treatment. A new partnership between Southern Plains Medical Center and the Oklahoma Spine Hospital will allow patients to see specialists locally. Len Lacefied is the CEO of Southern Plains Medical Center.

Lacefield said Dr. Bridger Cox, a board certified neurosurgeon with the Spine Hospital will lead the team at Southern Plains.

More Flu Cases in Oklahoma

Two more Oklahomans have died from the flue in the past week and there were 86 total new flu cases in the last seven days. The state health department reports the total number of deaths from the flu are now at 228, with more than 4,300 total flu cases since last September. Grady County flu cases are now at 71; Stephens County is 67; Garvin County at 37; McClain County is 59. Comanche County reports 125 and Caddo County still has the lowest number at 23.

School Bus Crashes Occur in Minco, Mustang

Police in Minco and Mustang are investigating school bus accidents which occurred this morning. In Minco, a bus with 16 students on board was rear-ended by a motorist. None of those students nor drivers were injured. In Mustang one of four student passengers was treated for minor injuries. The Minco accident happened in the 600 block of NW 3rd about 7:45 a.m.  Minco Police Officer John Junkersfeld said the bus was southbound, and was preparing to stop and pick up more students, when a car ran up underneath the back of the bus. Junkersfeld said the bus driver quickly got the students off the bus, and all were checked by Tuttle EMS. The kids were all pre-school to high school-aged students,  put on another bus and taken to school. Junkersfeld has not yet released the name of the Minco woman who drove into the back of the bus. The bus crash in Mustang happened about 8:00 a.m  at SW 104th and Mustang Road. There were no immediate details about that accident.

One Dead, One Hospitalized Following Fatal Crash

A deadly crash south of Minco, where a semi rear-ended a car and sent it into oncoming traffic. Killed in the crash was 60-year old Joyce McDaniel of Minco. A second person who was a passenger in another vehicle was sent to the hospital. That crash occurred just after 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, two miles south of Minco on Highway 81. The Highway patrol reports that McDaniel was southbound on the highway, and  had stopped to allow traffic to clear before turning on to the county road. Her car was rear-ended by a semi driven by 26-year old Koby Griffin of Childress, Texas. McDaniel's car was then hit by an oncoming pickup driven by 30-year old Benjamin Meraz of El Reno. Neither Griffin nor Meraz were seriously injured. A passenger in Meraz’ pickup,  52-year old Jose Castro Perez of El Reno, was last in good condition in an Oklahoma City hospital.

Smoke Alarm Wakes Local Family

Frantic moments for a Norge family this morning, when they were awakened by their smoke alarm. Fire crews from Pioneer and Ninnekah were dispatched to the home about 12:30 this morning. Grady County Fire Department spokesman Buddy Myers says the residents saw smoke billowing out of the mobile home’s floor vent. Myers says fire fighters were able to contain the fire to a bedroom, and neither of the two residents suffered any injuries. An electrical problem is believed to have caused that fire.

Two Injured in Morning Crash

Myers also tells us about an early morning traffic accident south of Chickasha. Two pickups were involved in the crash at the junction of U.S. Highways 81 and 277 about 5:30 this morning. Southbound traffic on Highway 81 was narrowed to one lane for a couple of hours. Two unidentified people were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

All Ft. Cobb Home Invasion Suspects in Custody

Caddo County authorities now say all three suspects alleged to have been involved in a home invasion in Ft. Cobb last weekend are in custody. A post on the Caddo County Sheriff's Office Facebook page says 26-year old Montana Beaver and 21-year old Damond Dailey were both in custody Tuesday evening. A third suspect was already behind bars. The arrest warrant for one of the men indicates that the trio went to the home Saturday night. One of them knocked on the door, and when someone answered, two men with guns forced their way inside and fired several shots. No one inside the home was hurt. Beaver and Dailey are both from Anadarko. A third suspect is Stephen Hawzipta of Tahlequah. All have been formally charged with attempted robbery with a weapon.

Healthy Soil, Clean Water Linked

There is a connection between healthy soil and clean water. Blake White, a Grady County 4Her studying geology and soil health, says soil erosion and the run-off of fertilizers and pesticides are common sources of water pollution. He says that erosion is due to a lack of organic matter in soil.

White says just a one percent increase in organic matter to the soil allows it to hold an additional 19,000 gallons of water per acre.

Arrests Made in Child Neglect Case

A toddler found roaming along a busy highway was the beginning of an investigation where children are found living in sub-standard conditions. Chickasha police found a mobile home reeking of urine and feces and one-year old child wearing an old soiled diaper. When an officer went to change the diaper, it had stuck to the children’s bottom, and some of her skin came off. A probable cause affidavit indicates that as police initially tried to find the home where the wandering toddler lived, the child's parents drove up. They said the children were asleep, and they left them alone to go to a restaurant. 23-year old Darien Amill Jeffers and 27-year old Jazzmine Julia Kay Bennet were arrested and prosecutors have filed felony child neglect charges against them. They remain in the Grady County Jail pending $100,000 bond each.

GOP Holds House District 51 Seat

Republicans hold on to a seat in the State House of Representatives. Brad Boles defeated Democrat Charles Murdoch in yesterday's special election for House District 51. The region includes parts of Chickasha and eastern Grady County, as well as Marlow and a portion of Stephens County. Boles, the Mayor of Marlow, picked up 72 percent of the vote, 1,501 to 580. Boles will take the seat previously held by Chickasha's Scott Biggs, who stepped down from the post last November. Once he is sworn in, Boles term runs through the end of 2018.

Minco Voters OK Bonds for New Middle School

A new middle school will be built in Minco. Voters approved a $14.5 million, 10-year bond issue in a special election yesterday by a nearly two-to-one margin. The measure picked up 66 percent of the vote, 224 to 113. In addition to a new middle school, Superintendent Kevin Sims said the current middle school will be renovated and will be used as the elementary school, safe rooms will be built, and they'll be able to purchase Chrome tablets for all students in grades 4-12. Funds will also be used to purchase text books. A second transportation measure also passed with nearly 72 percent voter approval. That was a $450,000 measure to purchase new school buses, and other vehicles for school use.

Caddo County Voters Extend Sales Tax

In Caddo County, voters overwhelmingly approved the continuation of a quarter-of-a-penny, county-wide sales tax. The measure collected more than 9 out of every 10 votes, easily passing 855 to 72. The funds are used to support the Caddo County Sheriff's Office, the county courthouse, senior nutrition programs, volunteer fire departments, the county fairgrounds, OSU Extension office, and many district fairs. The tax which was initially passed in 1993 will now run through 2014.

Erratic Driver Arrested After Crash Takes Out Light Pole

A motorist is arrested after a weekend traffic accident takes out a light pole at a Chickasha intersection.  Police initially received a call about an erratic driver on the H.E. Bailey Turnpike, and  the downtown area. The accident occurred at 16th Street and Highway 62 early Sunday morning. Authorities arrested 27-year old Clifton Yeahquo of Anadarko on complaints of DUI and drug possession. He's been formally charged with a felony count of drug possession with intent to distribute and misdemeanor charges of DUI and transporting an open container. He's being held in the Grady County Jail in lieu of a $100,000 bond.

High Winds Fuel Fires

Tuesday’s high winds were to blame on a number of wildfires in the region. The largest was in the Purcell area on I-35. Smoke from the fire stopped traffic on the interstate. Firefighters were called out to a couple of fires in the Pocasset area. One was west of Highway 81 and Giles Road and the other was east of Highway 81 and the Amber cut-off. Luckily, fire crews quickly got those under control, each one scorching about an acre of grassland. Grady County Fire Department spokesman Buddy Myers says one fire was caused by burning trash and the other by someone welding. Myers says individuals may have to pay for firefighter services if they are found responsible for starting fires when there is a high fire risk.

New Chickasha Police Chief on Board

New Chickasha Police Chief Greg Anderson spent his first day on the job meeting a lot of city officials and getting used to his new surroundings. Anderson spent the last 23 years working for the Moore Police Department. His first day in Chickasha included a meeting with the city manager, some city council representatives, and a few police officers. Anderson says he wants the department to be involved in the community.

Anderson said he'll have an open door policy with residents.

Property Near Railroad Re-zoned for Industrial Use               

The Chickasha City Council approves the re-zoning of some land in the north part of the city for industrial development. More than 33 acres of city-owned land was recently sold to the city's economic development council, which hopes to recruit companies and their jobs to the region. The area is just north of the Whispering Pines Apartments. The land had been zoned for multi-family residential use, but since it is next to a railroad, officials believe the new zoning will make it attractive for a firm that could use rail service.

Mixed Martial Arts, Boxing Event Approved

An outdoor mixed martial arts and boxing competition is approved by the Chickasha City Council. After some discussion regarding noise complaints, and if the event is properly licensed by the state, the panel approved the event for April 19th and 20th. A weigh-in for the event will be held April 19^th at the Legends Cafe, the former Long John Silver's restaurant. The actual event will be April 20th at the Legends Pub House, the former Eduardo's Restaurant. The event, which is supposed to include a concert afterwards, will have to shut down by 11:00 p.m. April 20th.

One Arrested, Two Sought in Ft. Cobb Home Invasion

Authorities in Caddo County have one person in custody and are looking for two others in connection with a home invasion that occurred near Ft. Cobb over the weekend. Reports indicate that three armed men broke into a home Saturday night. KSWO-TV reports that two of the men drove away, and a third was caught about a quarter-mile away. 40-year-old Stephen Hawzipta of Tahlequah was formally charged with attempted robbery with a weapon in Caddo County District Court yesterday. He remains in jail on a $100,000 bond. Arrest warrants have been issued for 26-year- old Montana Beaver and 21-year old Damon Dailey, both of Anadarko. Anyone with information on the two men are asked to call the Caddo County Sheriff's office, 405-247-5700.

Election Day in Some Areas

It's election day in some parts of Oklahoma. Voters in Minco are going to the polls to decide two special bond issues for the school district. One is a $14.5 million measure to build a new middle school, some safe rooms, and other improvements. There's also a $450,000 transportation bond. Voters will choose a new member for the State House of Representatives in House District 51. Democrat Charles Murdoch and Republican Brad Boles are on the ballot. The district includes Ninnekah, Alex, and Marlow, including most of eastern Grady County, and northern and eastern sections of Stephens County. There is also one precinct in Newcastle in the district. In Caddo County, voters will decide if a one-quarter county-wide sales tax should be extended for five years. The tax helps fund services that include the Caddo County Sheriff's Office, the courthouse, volunteer fire departments, and more. Polls are open until 7 o'clock tonight. For Grady County voters who used to vote at the Cox City Baptist Church, that precinct has moved to the Vimy Ridge Baptist Church in Rush Springs.

Ft. Sill Troops Finally Home

Ft. Sill troops who spent the last nine months deployed to South Korea are finally home, after several delays postponed their return. About 260 soldiers of 2nd Battalion, 4th Field Artillery were stuck in Alaska on their return flight home, and spent about four days in Anchorage. Engine problems on their plane was the big reason for the delays, then the flight crew had been up so long they had to have a mandatory rest period. The troops were finally reunited with family and friends late Sunday night.

OSBI Investigates Deadly Chickasha Stabbing

The investigation continues into a deadly stabbing at a Chickasha home this past weekend. Authorities have a suspect in custody in connection with the attack, which also left a second woman hospitalized. Chickasha police were summoned to a home at 928 South 2nd Street Saturday night. A police spokesman said a woman called authorities saying she had been stabbed by her step-father, and believed her mother was dead. Authorities found the body of 53-year old Lisa Marie Delira inside the home. Police also arrested 64-year old Jesus Gaspar Delira, who was still inside the home. The woman who called police, 31-year old Jessica Marie Hayes, was air-lifted to an Oklahoma City hospital. She was listed in stable condition this morning. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation was called in to the lead the probe into the attack. Officials have not yet indicated a possible motive.

Weekend Fires Destroy Home; Scorches Grassland               

A weekend fire destroys a home southeast of Chickasha. Grady County and Chickasha fire firefighters were called out about 2 o'clock Sunday morning to the home, about 1 ½ miles east of the Highway 81 and 19 junction. Officials say the home was fully involved when they arrived. Fire officials took a defensive stand against the blaze to protect nearby buildings, and it did spark a grass fire that burned about an acre. The resident of the home, Marie Story, was not there when the fire started. Officials had not yet determined how the fire started. Grady County fire crews were also dispatched to a grass fire south of the Ninnekah Cemetery Friday night. Firefighters managed to get that fire out with no damage to property, although about 50 acres were burned. Grady County Fire Department spokesman Buddy Myers said an individual was burning some brush when the fire got out of control, and ignited some love grass that was about a foot high.

New Chickasha Police Chief to Start

A new police chief arrives in Chickasha this morning. Greg Anderson was recently named the new chief after a nationwide search. Anderson is a 23-year law enforcement veteran with the Moore police department. He's spent the last 12 years as a supervisor with the last six years as captain.  Anderson has more than 2,000 hours of police training, and holds a bachelor's degree in law enforcement administration and ethics. Anderson fills the post previously held by Stewart Steele, who moved on to Rio Rancho, New Mexico to serve as police chief there. Assistant Police Chief G.G. Music has been serving as interim chief since last fall.

Mick Cornett Campaign for Governor Hits Chickasha

Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett, who has announced his candidacy for governor, will be in Chickasha later today. Cornett will have a meet-and-greet and is also to appear at the on-going forum for gubernatorial candidates at USAO. Cornett says his priorities are health and education, and will work to put an end to partisan politics. Regarding the Step-Up Oklahoma plan which was proposed before the legislative session started, Cornett said he did not support every segment of it.

A meet-and-greet for Cornett will be held at the InterUrban Restaurant from 6:00 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. tonight, then he’lll speak at the USAO forum at 7:00 p.m.

City Council May Auction Mineral Rights 

The Chickasha City Council meets tonight, and among discussion items are to consider a public sale of mineral rights for about 47 acres of land the city owns near the city’s airport. The council meets at 6:30 p.m. at city hall.

Oklahoma adds 3 drilling rigs to production count.                                                                                                                                   

(The AP Reports) — The number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. increased by three this week to 981…exceeding the 756 rigs that were active this time a year ago. Among major oil- and gas-producing states, Oklahoma increased by three rigs, Alaska and Pennsylvania each gained two rigs and New Mexico and Texas increased by one. The most active area after the Permian, is South Texas' Eagle Ford shale with 70 rigs, and then Oklahoma's Cana-Woodford shale with 68 rigs. Oklahoma is home to 124 rigs at this time. Nationally Services Company Baker Hughes reported Friday that 800 rigs drilled for oil this week and 181 for gas. The U.S. rig count in 1981 was 4,530 and bottomed out in May of 2016 at 404.

Duncan youth services cut.

In DUNCAN,  State budget cuts have resulted in the closing of Youth Services for Stephens County Friday. The decision came from the agency's board of directors as the result of budget and funding issues. According to the Lawton Constitution, Youth Services Board Chair Joe Henderson said, …the history of budget cuts and revenue shortfalls at the state level, as well as the additional announcement of a two percent cut, the board did not feel the agency could withstand the additional cuts, and …felt there was no other option.

National Flu

The worst of the flu season is over, according to CDC and U.S. health officials, but the toll of children dying has rose to  17 more since Friday; bring the total to 114. Southern states have been hit with 33 of the pediatric deaths. At this time Flu activity remains active in 45 states and Puerto Rico. This Flu season started early…. was more intense …and the flu vaccine only 36 percent effective overall in preventing flu severe issues. Grocery Store Tops New Chix Construction Projects

The recent announcement of a new grocery store coming to Chickasha bolstered the city's new construction permits for February. Contractors for Aldi's were awarded a $2 million building permit to renovate the former Staples store. There's no word on when that work might begin. That permit provided the bulk of the more than $2.6 million in new construction that was approved by the city's Community Development Department. A total of 14 permits were approved. Two other commercial construction projects were authorized. One was for $35,000 to American Tower Corporation for the cel phone tower at 13th and Choctaw. The other was for $5,000 for a remodel at Brandt's Ace Hardware. In residential projects, Elite Construction was approved for the renovation of the Jimmie and Ruth Johnson home at 16th and Country Club for nearly $190,000. The Johnson home received considerable damage in a fire in December. Also, two more new homes will be built in the Sleepy Hollow Two addition. Home Creations received permits to build the homes, each valued around $130,000. In the first two months of 2018, city officials have approved more than $6.3 million in new construction.

Lindsay Motorist Hurt in Crash

A motorist is hospitalized following a traffic accident south of Lindsay. 69-year old Tommy Shelton of Lindsay suffered head and internal injuries and was last in stable condition in a Norman hospital. The accident happened about 7 o'clock Thursday morning, a mile-and-a-half south of Lindsay on Highway 76. The Highway Patrol reports that Shelton failed to yield while entering the highway. His pickup was broadsided in the driver's side by another pickup driven by 34-year old Zachary Benefield of Sprio. Benefield was not hurt.

Flu Continues in Oklahoma

Another 157 cases of the flu have been reported in Oklahoma in the past week. However there were no new deaths related to the flu. The state health department reports the total flu numbers since last September have topped the 4,100 mark, with 194 deaths. In this region, Grady County has had 68 flu cases; Stephens County has had 64; McClain County has had 57; Garvin County reports 35; and Caddo County has had just 23 flu cases since the first of September.

Stock Show Premium Sale Another Huge Success

A lot of money changed hands at the Grady County Fairgrounds last night. The premium sale capped the week-long Grady County Junior Livestock show. At last count, more than $160,000 was paid to the youth who had the top animals this week. The auction alone brought nearly $90,000. Add-ons were at $75,000 and climbing. The animal that commanded the highest bid was the grand champion market barrow shown by Tyler Waitman of Tuttle, which brought $2,500. The grand champion market steer shown by Blake Janssen of Amber-Pocasset, brought $2,000. Each of the 123 animals in the sale sold for at least $500.

New Rules in Place Regarding Quake, Fracking Link

Energy companies working in the SCOOP and STACK plays have some new rules to follow regarding earthquakes that may come from hydraulic fracturing. Matt Skinner with the Oklahoma Corporation Commission says the agency has developed a new seismicity protocol.

The SCOOP and STACK are the state's largest oil and gas plays. Tim Baker heads the commission's Oil and Gas Conservation Division. Baker said the changes are part of the panel's effort to learn how to mitigate the risk of causing earthquakes. The new rules have the support of the Oklahoma Geological Survey. Retailers to Restrict Gun Sales

Two national retailers are taking action regarding the sale of guns and automatic weapons in light of the tragic school shooting in Florida last month. Dick's Sporting Goods has announced they have stopped the sale of assault-style rifles and have banned the sale of all guns to  anyone under 21. Wal-Mart has also announced they will not sell firearms and ammunition to anyone under 21. Wal-Mart also said it will remove items resembling assault-style rifles from its website. Wal-Mart stopped selling AR-15s and other semi-automatic weapons in 2015.

Anadarko Schools, Police Form Alliance

A partnership between the Anadarko Police Department and  Anadarko Public Schools hopes to provide added safety for Anadarko students. The partnership will create a school resource officer program. Superintendent Cindy Hackney says it's designed to be both preventive and supportive. She said while providing the district with more resources for safety programs, it will also serve as a platform to develop positive interactions and relationships between students and law enforcement. Anadarko Mayor Kyle Eastwood said the safety of students  is an essential part of delivering a good education. He also said improving the quality of life in Anadarko and the quality of education in the district are keys for the city's economic development.

Early-Voting Underway in Next Week's Elections         

A number of special elections are coming up next Tuesday, and voters have the opportunity to cast their ballots early. In-person, absentee voting is available at county election boards. There's a special election for House District 51 in the State House of Representatives, which involves most of eastern Grady County, north-central and eastern sections of Stephens County, and one precinct in Newcastle. In Minco, voters will decide a special bond issue. A  new middle school would be built if it is approved. In all of Caddo County, voters will decide if a county-wide quarter-cent sales tax to fund numerous county services should continue. Voting is from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and tomorrow at county election boards.

Top Beef Show Winners at Grady County Stock Show

We have results of the beef show portion of the Grady County Junior Livestock Show. Of the 33 market steers shown, Blake Jansen of Amber-Pocasset had grand champion, while Konner Shebester of Alex had the reserve grand. There were 44 heifers, and Clay Grossnicklaus of Chickasha had the grand champion, while McKenzie Layton of Ampo had the reserve. The 82nd annual show wraps up today with the livestock judging contest, and the highlight of the week tonight with the premium sale. 125 animals will be sold, and while youth may have shown several animals this week, they only get one in the sale. The buyer's dinner will get underway about 5:30 p.m., with the awards ceremony at 6:45. The auction starts at 7 o'clock. Brian McIntire is the auctioneer.

Goat Show Winners for Caddo County Stock Show

We have the final results from the Caddo County Junior Livestock Show that was held in Anadarko earlier this week. In the goat show, the grand and reserve grand champion wethers were shown by Preston Garner. The grand and reserve grand champion does were shown by Jennica Williams. There is no sale for the spring livestock show in Caddo County. The premium sale is held in the fall.

Korean War Vet May be Added to Veterans Memorial

Earlier this month we told you that the remains of a soldier who died during the Korean Conflict had been buried in a Grady County cemetery. The remains of Sgt. Ollie Shepard were buried in the Bradley Cemetery. Shepard was reported missing in action more than 60 years ago. Officials with the Oklahoma Veterans Recognition Committee say Sgt. Shepard's name should be added to the Veterans Memorial in Chickasha’s Shannon Springs Park. We contacted Shepard's sister, Henrietta Spangler, who lives in Oklahoma City. She said Shepard was 19-years old when he joined the Army, and he was 22 when he was reported missing in action. Spangler said one of her siblings supplied the DNA which led to the identification of her brother’s remains. Spangler said they spent part of their childhood in the Bradley and Lindsay area, and that her brother was buried alongside their parents in Bradley. Sherri Lewis with the Oklahoma Veterans Recognition Committee said she hopes to add Sgt. Shepard's name to the memorial before the group's Memorial Day ceremony.

PSO Crews Assist in Puerto Rico Power Restoration               

Work crews from Public Service Company of Oklahoma are among hundreds of utility workers across the country who are working to restore electricity in Puerto Rico. The country was left in ruins after Hurricane Maria decimated the island nation last September. Maria was a Category 5 storm. A few PSO workers have just returned after spending about a month on the massive project. PSO spokesman Tim Hushbeck said it was quite an ordeal just to get vehicles and equipment there.

Crews are working 16-hour days in the effort to rebuild the country’s electrical system.

Numerous Events Coming to Grady County Fairgrounds

While the annual Grady County Junior Livestock Show continues at the Grady County Fairgrounds, fairgrounds officials are making plans for several upcoming events, including a couple of first-time activities. Coming up in March is one of several antique auto swap meets. March 16th and 17th will be the Pre-War Swap Meet, which is for vehicles before World War II. It celebrates the first 50 years of motorized transportation. One of the new events will be the Oklahoma High School and Junior High Rodeo March 23^rd through 25^th. About 250 competitors are expected. A first-of-its-kind event for the entire state is the Oklahoma Slick Shear Expo on March 31^st. A total of $15,000 will be paid to the top 15 steers, with a $5,000 prize to the grand champion. In mid-April, the Sooner Ponies of America Show returns to the fairgrounds. Later in the spring, the Chickasha Antique Auto Club will hold its spring swap meet in mid-May, and in late May and early June,  the state finals of the Oklahoma High school rodeo association are scheduled.

Beef Show Highlights Grady County Stock Show

The beef show highlights the Grady County Junior Livestock Show today. On Thursday, 4H and FFA teams will compete in the livestock judging contest. Thursday night will be the buyer’s dinner and the premium sale of the top 125 animals shown. However, exhibitors are only allowed to have one animal in the sale.

School Threat Suspect was a Middle School Student

The person arrested this past weekend for making threats toward a Grady County school district was a student there. Officials with the Grady County Sheriff's Office said the 15-year old boy was a student at the Bridge Creek Middle School. The sheriff's office was notified about the threats made on social media sites on Sunday. The sheriff's office posted information on its Facebook page, and received a number of tips from that post that helped lead to the teen's arrest. He was found in the Bridge Creek area. Investigators did not reveal detailed information about  the threats, and have not said what charges the youth may be facing.  Security was amped up at Bridge School schools yesterday.

Caddo County Woman's Death Called 'Suspicious'

Authorities in Caddo County are looking into a suspicious death in Carnegie. The body of 55-year old Carla Renee Turney was found by Carnegie police in her apartment Sunday afternoon. Authorities called in the OSBI and the district attorney's task force to help with the investigation. Carnegie police were called to Turney's apartment to do a welfare check. Investigators did not indicate if she suffered any trauma. A number of individuals were interviewed and officials collected evidence, but gave no indication of what that might be.

December Another Huge Month for Consumer Spending

Consumer spending in Grady County continued at a brisk pace last December, to the tune of $105 million. That's up about 4.4 percent from November, and up more than 70 percent from December of 2016. We estimate consumer spending when we see the sales tax revenue collected by the county. The February sales tax report from the state tax commission shows more than $790,000 in sales tax collections, which is based on the purchase of taxable goods and services from December. The sales tax is distributed to a number of areas, all of which were approved by county voters. The Grady County Fairgrounds receives more than $263,000; Grady Memorial Hospital receives $233,000. The 20 fire districts share more than $130,000 (each one collects nearly $6,600); the seven senior nutrition sites also divide $130,000 (each one receives nearly $19,000). Tuttle EMS receives $24,000 and Rush Springs EMS gets about $6,000.

Elections Are One Week from Today; You Can Vote Early

Voters in several areas will cast ballots next week. Sample ballots are available for the House District 51 special election, where Democrat Charles Murdock faces Republican Brad Boles. Both are from Marlow. The winner takes over the seat in the State House of Representatives previously held by Scott Biggs. Voters in the Minco school district will decide two bond issues. One is for $14.5 million and would build a new middle school. A second bond issue for $450,000 is for transportation. In Caddo County, voters will decide if a quarter-cent county-wide  sales tax should be extended another five years. Voters can cast ballots ahead of next Tuesday's election. In-person, absentee voting will be available this Thursday and Friday  at county election board offices.

Tuttle Youth Exhibit Top Swine at Grady County Stock Show

More than 250 swine were shown during the first day of the Grady County Junior Livestock Show on Monday. Tyler Waitman of Tuttle had the grand champion market barrow, and Brylee Jarboe of Verden had the reserve. There were 205 barrows led through the show ring. Hunter Hines of Tuttle had the grand champion gilt, and Kayla Moody had the reserve. There were 49 gilts in the show. Today, both the sheep and the goats will be shown. The show is being held in Chickasha at the Grady County Fairgrounds.

Cattle Show Results from Caddo County Stock Show

The entire Caddo County Junior Livestock Show was held in Anadarko yesterday. Grand champion market steer was shown by Alexia Carney; and the reserve was shown by Tucker Freie. The Grand Champion Prospect steer was shown by Tucker Freie; and Emma Farmer had the reserve. Tucker Freie also had the grand champion heifer; and Cody Courtney had the reserve. Jordyn Jackson had the bred-and-owned champion heifer. We'll have other results of the Caddo County stock show later this week.

Blood Drives Set to Help Re-Stock Dwindling Supply

The Oklahoma Blood Institute says blood supplies are low because of last week's bad weather. There are a couple of blood drives in Chickasha the next couple of days. One of them gets underway at 9 o'clock this morning at the Chickasha High School Activity Center. That's being held until 2 o'clock this afternoon. Tomorrow, Grady Memorial Hospital will host a blood drive from 10:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Arrest Made in Connection with Threats Made at Local School

Grady County investigators make an arrest in connection with some weekend threats made toward the Bridge Creek School District. A post on the sheriff's office Facebook page late Sunday evening indicates that Sheriff Jim Weir and Undersheriff Phil Blevins made the arrest last night. There was no information immediately available about the suspect. A statement on the Bridge Creek School’s website this morning said there would be an increased presence of law enforcement today. School officials thanked the sheriff's office for its hard work. Sheriff's office Public Information Officer Lisa Hatchett said she received some tips on Facebook regarding the suspect. The post says the suspect ultimately confessed to making the threats.

Chickasha Police to Enforce Seat Belt Law

Commuters in Chickasha are encouraged to buckle up. Over the next two weeks, police officers will be making a concerted effort to make sure that motorists are using their seat belts, especially when it comes to school zones. Today through March 9th, Chickasha police will join with other law enforcement groups in an attempt to reduce fatality accidents and those leading to serious injury, especially when it comes to teenagers. The Oklahoma Highway Safety Office reports that in 2016, 38 Oklahoma teenagers died in motor vehicle crashes. Most of them could have increased their chances of surviving had they been buckled up. The theme for the next couple of weeks is Buckle up, Every Trip, Every Time. Authorities say they will issue tickets to anyone who is pulled over for not wearing their safety belts.    

Chix Chamber Issues Awards; Announces 2018 Plans

A number of awards were handed out at the 95th annual Chickasha Chamber of Commerce banquet last Friday. The Humanitarian Award was posthumously presented to Ada Sipuel-Fisher. The Hall of Fame Legacy Awarded was posthumously awarded to Elmer DeHart. The Living Legacy Award was presented to Eleanor Miller. The Citizen of the Year Award was issued to Tim Elliott and Volunteer of the Year Award  was given to Katey Chambers. Also during the banquet, Ed Stanton, the new chairman of the chamber's board of directors, said several groups will be re-unified with the chamber this year.

Stanton takes over the Chamber board chairmanship from Jeff McClure, who will remain on the panel as past-chairman.

Grady County Jr. Livestock Show Underway

County bragging rights are up for grabs for 4H and FFA youth this week. The 82nd annual Grady County Junior Livestock Show gets underway today. More than 200 youth will bring their sheep, goats, pigs, and cattle to the Grady County Fairgrounds over the next several days, hoping to be named the Grand Champion. The big night for the show is Thursday, where the premium auction will be held. The top 125 animals will be sold. Over the past several years, the auction has paid more than $100,000 to the youth.

Deadline Nears to Change Political Affiliation

There will be a number of state and federal elections this fall. Anyone wanting to change their political affiliation ahead of the June primary elections should do so soon. Officials with the Oklahoma State Election Board say the deadline to change party affiliation is Saturday, March 31st. Oklahoma has three recognized political parties: Republican, Democrat, and Libertarian. Voters can register as Independent, but may not vote in the primary elections, unless a recognized party allows them to do so. The Democratic Party will let Independents vote in the June primary election. Changes can be made in person at your local county election board through March 30th. If you want to mail in your status change, applications must be post-marked by Saturday, March 31st.

 Chix Chamber Issues Humanitarian, other Awards              

A national civil rights pioneer and several community leaders were honored for their work as part of the 95th annual banquet of the Chickasha Chamber of Commerce last night. Ada Sipuel-Fisher, who broke the color barrier at the OU Law School in the 1940s, was posthumously honored with the Humanitarian Award. Fisher, along with attorneys that included future U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, took their battle all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled in her favor. The award was presented to her children, Bruce Fisher and Charlene Factory. Bruce Fisher, says the work of his mother is now getting worldwide recognition.

Also honored was the late Elmer DeHart, whose family was presented the Hall of Fame Legacy Award . DeHart and his his father started DeHart Air Conditioning. Eleanor Miller was presented the Living Icon Award. She and her late husband Bill owned and operated the Dixie Store for many years. Tim Elliott of Standley Systems was named Citizen of the Year, and Katey Chambers of First National Bank was named Volunteer of the Year. Ed Stanton was also sworn in as the new chairman for the Chamber of Commerce board of directors.

Burn Ban Lifted for Some Counties

A burn ban implemented by Gov. Mary Fallin has been lifted for much of western Oklahoma. The ban was put into place for 40 counties earlier this month, then expanded to 52 counties. While the ban has been lifted for central and southwest parts of the state, it is still active in extreme western Oklahoma and in parts of the Panhandle. Officials with the state forestry service say while the moisture received with this week's winter storm has given the state a reprieve, the fire season is not over. State Forester George Geissler says Oklahoma could be right back into high fire danger within a couple of weeks. He said long-range forecasts are calling for the winter and spring fire season to continue through April.

Medical Examiner Says Man Hangs Himself

A man whose body was found in a downtown Chickasha alley died by hanging himself. A preliminary report from the State Medical Examiner indicates that 30-year old James Wilson of Duncan used a belt to take his own life. Wilson's body was found near a vacant building south of the 600 block of Chickasha Avenue last week.

Deadline Soon for Conservation Stewardship Program

Landowners wanting to preserve and improve their cropland and wildlife habitat may be able to get help from a federal program. It's called the Conservation Stewardship Program. The United States Department of Agriculture looks to enroll up to 10 million acres in the program nationwide this year. Participants earn payments for actively managing, maintaining, and expanding conservation efforts. That includes cover crops, pollinator and beneficial insect habitat, buffer strips, and even ecologically-based pest management. Some benefits of the program could include better resilience to extreme weather, improvements in wildlife population, and an increase in crop yields. USDA accepts applications into the program year-round. However, applications must be received by next Friday, March 2nd in order to be considered for funding this year. Landowners can contact their local office of the Natural Resources Conservation District for information.

PSO Hopes to be Part of America's Largest Wind Farm

Public Service Company of Oklahoma is looking to be part of what would be the largest wind farm in the country. It's called the Windcatcher Project, which would build 800 wind turbines in the Oklahoma Panhandle and transmit electricity to the Tulsa area. It's a $4.5 billion project, with PSO partnering with Southwestern Electric Power. Both are subsidiaries of American Electric Power. The electricity generated by the wind farm would be sold to a number of surrounding states. Tim Hushbeck with PSO is hopeful the plan will be approved soon.

An administrative law judge with the Corporation Commission is recommending the proposal not be approved. Should the panel go ahead  approve the plan, Hushbeck believes the project could be completed by the spring of 2021. Once completed, it's estimated that it could save PSO customers $2 billion over 25 years.

Flu Numbers Still on the Rise

The flu continues to hit Oklahoma hard. Another five deaths in the state reported within the last week, bringing flu-related deaths to 173 since last September. In all, another 168 flu cases reported last week, with the total number of hospitalized flu cases up to nearly 3,900. In this region, there have been 52 flu cases in Grady County; Stephens County has had 60; McClain County reports 51; and Garvin County is at 34. Comanche County is now in triple digits with 104. Caddo County has had 20 flu reports this season.

Blood Supply Near Critical Low Level

The winter weather has taken its toll on Oklahoma's blood supply. Officials with the Oklahoma Blood Institute say only about half of the donors needed to maintain the blood supply have been able to contribute this week. Donor centers statewide are extending their hours over the next couple of days. Donors may want to take part in blood drives in their communities. There are a couple of blood drives in Chickasha next week. On Tuesday, Feb. 27th, there's one at the Chickasha High School from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the activity center foyer. On Wednesday, Feb. 28th, Grady Memorial Hospital will have one from 10:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Coming up in a couple of weeks, KOOL 105.5/106.1 The Ranch, Mollman Media and the Chickasha Area YMCA will combine effforts have a blood drive on Friday, March 16, at the YMCA. More Wintry Weather on the Way

A winter weather advisory has been extended until 3 o’clock this afternoon for nearly the entire state of Oklahoma. A traveler’s advisory remains in effect as many roadways are slick and hazardous. The forecast is for periodic freezing rain and/or sleet through mid-afternoon, with steady temperatures in the mid to upper 20s. The high temperature could be slightly above freezing late this afternoon. Many schools are closed. The Grady County Courthouse is also closed today.

Chickasha Mayoral Candidates Discuss Goals

A new mayor will take the reins of the Chickasha City Council in the coming weeks. Tom Rose and Chris Mosley are seeking the post, and both say they hope to be leaders who will make things better for the community. Rose is a retired businessman and a retired Lt. Colonel. He says one of the things he wants to work on improving is the downtown area.

Oklahoma adds 3 drilling rigs to production count.                                                                                                                                   

(The AP Reports) — The number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. increased by three this week to 981…exceeding the 756 rigs that were active this time a year ago. Among major oil- and gas-producing states, Oklahoma increased by three rigs, Alaska and Pennsylvania each gained two rigs and New Mexico and Texas increased by one. The most active area after the Permian, is South Texas' Eagle Ford shale with 70 rigs, and then Oklahoma's Cana-Woodford shale with 68 rigs. Oklahoma is home to 124 rigs at this time. Nationally Services Company Baker Hughes reported Friday that 800 rigs drilled for oil this week and 181 for gas. The U.S. rig count in 1981 was 4,530 and bottomed out in May of 2016 at 404.

Duncan youth services cut.

In DUNCAN,  State budget cuts have resulted in the closing of Youth Services for Stephens County Friday. The decision came from the agency's board of directors as the result of budget and funding issues. According to the Lawton Constitution, Youth Services Board Chair Joe Henderson said, …the history of budget cuts and revenue shortfalls at the state level, as well as the additional announcement of a two percent cut, the board did not feel the agency could withstand the additional cuts, and …felt there was no other option.

National Flu

The worst of the flu season is over, according to CDC and U.S. health officials, but the toll of children dying has rose to  17 more since Friday; bring the total to 114. Southern states have been hit with 33 of the pediatric deaths. At this time Flu activity remains active in 45 states and Puerto Rico. This Flu season started early…. was more intense …and the flu vaccine only 36 percent effective overall in preventing flu severe issues. If you have become suddenly, and hard with a high fever between 102- and 106-degrees, Breathing Difficulty, cold chills caused by sweating, or you notice muscle tenderness in the back, arms, legs, and chest seek medical advice.
